‘Riddick’ Star Katee Sackhoff Wants to Play Harley Quinn

Katee Sackhoff in Riddick Riddick Star Katee Sackhoff Wants to Play Harley Quinn

Katee Sackhoff may be best known for her role on Battlestar Galactica, but the actress appears well on the road to becoming a big-screen action hero as well. Last year, she held her own against Vin Diesel in Riddick, and she’s already onboard for the all-female Expendables-esque action film from producer Adi Shankar (Dredd).

More specifically, Sackhoff has made it clear that she’s a fan of comic books and hopes to appear in a superhero film someday. The actress has continually name-dropped characters like Daredevil villain Typhoid Mary and even auditioned to play Wonder Woman.

Now, in an interview with Total Film, the prospect of playing a comic book character came up once again. Here’s what Sackhoff had to say:

“I would love to play any of these characters. I’d love to play Wonder Woman. I remember auditioning for the Wonder Woman television show and being told that I wasn’t the Wonder Woman type, but if I wanted to play the best friend, I could audition for that. I remember thinking to myself, ‘You obviously haven’t seen my work!’ [laughs] I would love to do that. I’m obsessed with Jinx. I would love to play Harley Quinn. I just think it’s amazing. I mean I think I might give away my firstborn to have an opportunity to play Harley Quinn.”

When asked about her favorite comic book film in the same interview, Sackhoff specifically mentioned Warner Bros.’ Batman series. So the fact that she seems so passionate to play one of the most popular female Gotham City residents makes sense, especially since the character – a staple of the comics, animated series and video games since her debut in the early 1990s – has yet to be brought to life in live-action. Sackhoff went on to describe why she’s drawn to the villainous character.

“I love trying to understand the villain, and trying to understand the things they do and why they do them, and I’ve always found her and The Joker, you almost can’t understand them. And it makes it so much more interesting because everything’s fair game, and I love that. I loved the usefulness of her, I thought that was interesting, and I just think that it’s a fantastic character.”

Sackhoff previously provided voice talent as Detective Sarah Essen in DC’s 2011 animated release Batman: Year One. It’s not a stretch to think that the company would bring her onboard to play another character in a future project. After all, Batman vs. Superman is expected to blow the DC film universe wide open. While a character like Harley Quinn will likely not factor into that project (unlike Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman), Warner Bros. will need to introduce a host of new characters when the inevitable solo film starring Ben Affleck’s Batman comes around. Plus, there’s always the chance that Harley Quinn could pop up on Fox’s Gotham series, focusing on young Jim Gordon.

However, if DC hopes to bring Sackhoff onboard as any character in the future, they may wish to act quickly. Marvel has already declared its interest in the actress, and with a Daredevil series in the works at Netflix, there’s still a chance that Sackhoff could play Typhoid Mary or another character in any number of Marvel film or television productions.

In the meantime, Sackhoff said that her Riddick character may appear in future films, but with both the Marvel and DC Cinematic Universes expanding in a big way in the next couple years, there’s every possibility that Sackhoff could land a comic book role in the near future. Only time will tell which character she ends up bringing to life when and if it does happen.

Which superhero or supervillain role would you like to see Sackhoff play? Sound off in the comments section below.

  1. God, no! She was awful in Riddick. And she does not look the part.

  2. no, her acting is at the bottom of the barrel. She was dreadful in Riddick. No way.

    • Who was good in Riddick?

In that particular case I would say direction is more at fault.

      • Vin Diesel was good.

  3. Even by risking another huge discussion (sexist! mysogynistic! bla!); nope, she isn’t the type of actress that I see for Harley Quinn. Sackhoff’s kinda the reverse of he Gadot/Wonder Woman situation. She is a bit too butch and masculine to look the part. Harley Quinn always struck me as the kinda girlish playful psychopath, that come across as somewhat fragile but that still can kick ass. Ironically Gal Gadot with blonde hait would be a good fit. :D

    • *TheLostWinchester

*sigh* I wish the site would remember the Name and Mail address again.

      • Ah, so it’s not just me…. I thought I had somehow changed some browser setting.

      • That’s been annoying me for a while now also

        • Yeah… it’s especially annoying when a typo in my screenname creates a connection to part of the Supernatural fandom that I really don’t want to be connected to. :D

p.s.: is that Max Headroom in avatar? Loved that show.

        • me too I wondering whats going on here with this website I gotta keep retyping my name and my email lol it’s getting annoying and tiresome

    • @TheLostWincester (lol, I know it’s Winchester)

I agree, she was a psychologist before (or was she a psychiatrist? I forgot which…) she wasn’t some butch MMA fighter or anything like that. She is supposed to be girly and only a threat because she’s so crazy, not because of her physicality. There’s always that running joke in Batman: The Animated Series (where she originated, which is why I use that as the example. For those of you about to jump on this, go look it up) of how Batman pretty easily defeats her when it’s down to physical combat. That joke is carried over into the Arkham games, well, I haven’t played Harley’s Revenge, but in the others, they always show her doing cartwheels and all kinds of crazy things dramatically, but then Batman just swats her down like a pesky fly, lol.

If anyone can think of a petite blonde cutie that’s also a great actress (playing a psychopath isn’t easy unless you want to make it a caricature), please respond with a name. I’m having trouble thinking of one off the top of my head…

  4. Can’t guess at how she’d be as Harley Quinn because I don’t know the character well enough, but she was fantastic in Battlestar. Also, I disagree about her being awful in Riddick. To me, there wasn’t even enough there in terms of her role to make much of a judgement.

    • She’s also very good in Longmire.

  5. The only person who comes to mind about playing Harley Quinn is Sherry Moon Zombie. Too bad it would never happen.

  6. I’ve grown to like Katee’s work on Longmire far more than I did when she was playing Starbuck and certainly more than her over-the-top performance on The Bionic Woman. To me, Harley Quinn requires a sort of Lolita-esque quality that Ms. Sackhoff does not possess.

    • Exactly.

  7. In my own opinion there is only one PERFECT choice to play Quinn – Kristen Bell. I mean come on… she is just perfect for the role :)

    • @Arturas

I’ve actually recommended her before for the role, but really thinking about it, I don’t think she has the acting chops for it. She has the looks, but I don’t think she can play a convincing psychopath. She’ll probably just look goofy and comedic the whole time trying…

      • Wouldn’t that fit perfectly with the character though? That’s precisely what Quinn is – goofy and comedic.

        • @THGhost

If we simply remake the cartoon version. As much as I love TAS, it can’t really be directly translated to the big screen. Harley Quinn is hilarious in TAS and I love that about her, but I think for a movie version, she should be a believable crazy. I do wish they would make her character more gray, not a “bad” person, just someone who is led to the wrong path by The Joker, that actually always made her more interesting for me too in TAS, how it kind of seems like deep inside she wants to do good, and there were several moments where it looked like she could really turn a new leaf. Most memorable was the episode where she was actually released due to good behavior (where she kisses Batman at the end, lol), and in Batman Beyond in the Return of the Joker episodes, *****BATMAN BEYOND EPISODE SPOILER AHEAD***** where at the end the new age Harley Quinn girls of the Joker gang was taken away by their grandma, who was none other than an old Harley Quinn, and she was actually punishing the girls for doing bad (meaning Harley herself has actually been living a law-abiding life).*****END BATMAN BEYOND SPOILER*****

And in my opinion, it is a lot harder to portray that kind of gray instead of just a comical caricature of a villain on screen…

  8. Brittany Murphy would have been the perfect Harley Quinn IMO.

    R.I.P. Brittany

    • Yes I agree on that one, but I didin’t mention her, because it’s not possible now, shame… :( but if there will be a movie with Harley Quinn, I think it should deffinetly go to K.Bell

    • Man you ain’t lying there. To see her and Heath Ledger together would’ve been the best villain duo in perhaps movie history.

      • That last comment was for motoko

    • Agree…Brittany Murphy would’ve been perfect. Her portrayal as Sheila in ‘SIN CITY’ reminded me of Harley Quinn (blond and short) with that psychotic sexy look

    • Yeah she would have been perfect she had the look, the voice, and her laugh was great

  9. No. Who she should play is Commander Shepard in first premium cable TV show to tackle dramatic sci-fi entitled, Mass effect.

  10. This is kind of an odd non-news story. A b-list actress would love to play a character that’s not being cast for any movie?

  11. Can’t see it.

  12. Ms. Marvel

  13. Let it go, Katee. Let it go….

This reminds me of Gina Carano spouting off about wanting to be Wonder Woman.

As I always said, “never gonna happen.”

  14. She would make a perfect Squirrel Girl.

    • No, Ellen Page for Squirrel Girl.

      • No. Katee Sackhoff for Squirrel Girl.

        • Katie Sackhoff can be Dinah Soar

  15. Kristen Bell would be a great choice, but Emma Watson would own it… #<3BrittishChicks

    • She’s too polite and wholesome for that. Even when she’s hot (I can’t even say sexy), it’s more the kind of attraction that makes you want to wife or girlfriend her up. But sexy psychotic girl who’s kind of creepy kind of attractive and entirely insane in the mind and by loyalty to the Joker? Nahhh

      • @TheAdditional1

Not to just be a Hermoine groupie, I think she has the acting chops to pull it off. It’s called acting because it’s different than how they normally are. But I think she’s too young for the role. Remember that the character was a Psychiatrist, someone with a doctorate, not a 19 year-old kid. We need someone who is probably around 30 to play the role. Although if Emma was cast, I would watch it because she’s beautiful, lol.

        • You do realise she’s 23, right? Not 19.

          • @THGhost

OMG, I TAKE IT ALL BACK!!!

Lol, you must be young, seriously, same thing… Either way, she’s not old enough. :-D

        • Lol yeah she’s my age. But yeah of course she has the chops, but even as Emma she just seems too pure for me to even want to watch being sexy and corrupted. I’m much more an Emma fan than a [movie] Hermione fan.

          • @TheAdditional1

I’m just a “beautiful woman” fan, and she’s one of them, lol. But anyway, she’s far too young for the role in my opinion. I would like to see someone in their early 30′s get the role. Someone petite and blonde, cute and crazy… I think I just described someone I would like to have a fling with… :-D

  16. I’m a Katie fan but no. She’s no Harley Quinn. She’s most defiantly no Wonder Woman. She obviously likes comic book geekery but that doesn’t mean she’s good for any female comic book role. I could see her as Domino in X Force.

  17. Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel.

I like Sackhoff, but do not think that she fits Harley Quinn. And to be fair, most actresses do not fit Quinn.

  18. I like the idea of Kristen Bell playing Harley Quinn, but my choice for Harley Quinn would be Molly Quinn. In addition to the coincidence in name Molly also looks like Harley and ,like Sackoff, she has experience in DC voice acting.

    • @zsimpson23

Like with the Emma Watson suggestion, Molly is far too young… Remember, she was a Psychiatrist before going nuts and becoming Harley Quinn. Someone with a doctorate degree. She needs to be somewhere around 30 at least.

  19. No idea who she is. Haven’t seen Riddick. Based on the pictures of her on Yahoo, she does look like she could play Harley Quinn though…

  20. NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO, god no please, she has alreaady ruined BSG, 24 and Riddick, no god nnnnnoooo!!!!

  21. Harley was on Birds of Prey in live action. Not great, but a point of fact that Mia Sarah (as in Ferris Buller) did try playing Harlene Quinselle on tv in live action.

  22. My summary reaction to this: “Oh, ok. Does she. Hm.”

In other words, no. She’s entirely too beefy, butch and masculine, not to mention old-looking, to play the “sexy psychotic girl who’s kind of creepy kind of attractive and entirely insane in the mind and by loyalty to the Joker” (I commented this earlier).

Not in the least, and it would be akin to Tim Curry’s character in Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I looked up Kristen Bell Harley Quinn, as some were suggesting, but was immediately distracted by Amanda Seyfried in similar suggestions. Even with just heavy eyeliner she looks 90% the part. Def looks like she could have issues.

    • agree Amanda Seyfried has that look of being nutjob girlfriend plus her role in Chloe sells it

    • @TheAdditional1

Ah, yes, Amanda Seyfried would probably work very well actually… Close to around the right age for the part, and actually already has that kind of psycho petite blonde look to her, lol. And I know she can act as well. Good choice…

  23. I remember the uproar and hatred that Tara Strong got when she took over voicing duties after Arleen Sorkin retired from acting and other Harley fans complained that Arleen was the only true Harley and that Tara somehow didn’t sound enough like her.

Bringing the character to live action? My fellow Harley fanatics will have a field day finding inventive ways to insult whoever gets cast in the role. Which is a shame and I feel sorry in advance for whoever nabs the part.

    • ha i remember that. When i played Arkham city i couldn’t even tell the difference i knew Tara could pull it off since she is a fantastic.

      • voice actress

  24. She’s too ugly. No.

  25. I can see her playing Harley Quinn. She’s pretty hot in an Amazon-esque type. Why can’t she play the “Suicide Squad” version of Harley Quinn? I can see her kicking some butt.

    • Which leads us to another point.

A lot of Harley’s fans despise the New 52 version of her.

      • @Dazz

I have the hugest crush on TAS version of Harley Quinn, and the Arkham games version is pretty dang hot too…

  26. Good God No. She can play Harley Quinn’s mother who doesn’t speak or move or act in any way.

  27. No question. She’s always been my pick for Power Girl.

  28. She’s a little older but I would not be opposed to seeing Cameron Diaz let her crazy out as Harley Quinn. She has those crazy eyes and that crazy laugh.

  29. Jane Levy. I could see her playing Harley Quinn.

    • YES!
