Kate Beckinsale May Not Be In Underworld 4?

Geeze, this is confusing.
From a pile of separate reports this month claiming that Underworld 4 would be coming our way (in 3D!), and later that it would launch a second trilogy, we also heard the very good news that it would bring back the star of the franchise, Kate Beckinsale, into her death-dealing role of Selene, the leather-clad vampire gunslinger.
Now, it doesn’t sound so promising that Beckinsale will be back to reprise the role in Underworld 4…
Yesterday, at a Beverly Hills press conference for her upcoming thriller, Whiteout, Beckinsale was asked about her involvement in the next Underworld installment and she didn’t seem too enthused or knowledgeable about it, clarifying that she had not signed on for another movie yet.
“I don’t know anything about a 4th Underworld. I don’t know anything about that at this point.”
Kate was then asked if to clarify if she knew nothing about Underworld 4.
“I know they have…it was always conceived as a trilogy, which I was never going to be in the third one. I think if they came up with an amazing script I wouldn’t be adverse to it. But it’s not planned or anything.”
Oh, so she does know about it and would do it if the script’s good. What about a trilogy of new films?
“God, three whole more!”
“I don’t think my daughter needs to see my bottom in rubber for another ten years. But I don’t know, I’ve heard they’re talking about a 4th one, but I don’t know if that’s officially happening or it’s that a rumor. As far as I’m concerned it’s just a rumor.”
Sounds to me like she’s hiding something… Either Kate is not being honest here or the two sources of Bloody Disgusting who claimed that she “is in fact attached to return” weren’t well-informed.
I still expect her to return to the role though, just look at what she said here. She’s completed filming Everybody’s Fine with Robert De Niro and only has one other project listed in development. The franchise needs to bring back the star and she doesn’t have much else on her plate.
Fans want to see her back, the studio would like her back, the film will make an easy profit and it will giver her some more stardom – Wins all around.
As we said earlier, there’s no official confirmation either way on this yet, but Underworld 4 does have an official release date of January 21, 2011.
Screen Rant will let you know what happens next with the Underworld franchise. What do you think about Kate’s words and the future of Underworld?
Check out Kate Beckinsale in Whiteout, opening September 11, 2009.

Around the web:

I think she is the franchise..her and husband Len Wiseman that is..I hope they both return because I really enjoyed the first two Underworld movies..and I would love to see her bottom in rubber for anther 10 years!!
“I would love to see her bottom in rubber for anther 10 years!!”
Ditto. I enjoyed all three films, and hopes she does return.
Wouldn’t Len be heavily involved at this point? Considering he pretty much came up with the idea of Underworld. If Len is involved how would she not know anything about it? They don’t talk or something? Makes no sense but I’d still like to see them both back, as long Len being back doesn’t mess with Gears of War even more.
Underworld is cool but she wants to get away from the franchise. It would only be a payday for her, nothing else to gain.
@MCat… I think you make a good point. It’s usually dangerous for an actor/actress to get too settled into a role/series. Can understand why she’d want something truly interesting to make it worthwhile. I must admit that I’m a little vague on what direction they’d take an entire trilogy of films for Underworld. Anything they might do just doesn’t seem like it would work with Beckensale’s character and mostly prequel material.
well I saw the first two and were very entertaining and although I never saw the prequel im excited for a new trilogy. As for the risk of kate doing too many she’s a good actress ,but she is not a household name she has done other projects in between ,and can get away with not being pigeonholed by audiances who see her other films ,but are not interested in the vampire franchise, besides the underworld films tend to do well only with the fans incase anyone has noticed so she does get a good check and everybody wins except if the studio decides to go along without beckinsale( Rise of the likans anyone?)
Meh, yawn.
Who cares if she was in it. The third movie proved they don’t need her. She’s hot and all but their are a lot of hot fishes in the sea.
I probably have th emost unpopular opinion (again), but the third was the best of the three movies. Not that I don’t like her, but if she doesn’t return, I really couldn’t care.
@Panda… Not sure I’d call the third the best, but I certainly consider it superior to the second film.
I consider the third one the best because IMO a film about Vampires vs. Werewolves to be best fought with swords rather than guns. Plus I find Rhona Mitra a hundred times hotter than Beckinsale.
@greenknight333,
DITTO!!
If Scott Speedman is back I’m definitely there.
I think I’m on the “greenknight ditto” machine.
Bring us up-to-date. Fall of the Lycans!!!
