There is nothing wrong with having McCoy be intelligent and a little tougher than in the original series. As far as whether he could pull it off or not, he is an actor, isn't he? Good for JJ for casting against type. When Good Will Hunting came out, I never pictured Matt Damon as an action star, then he made the Bourne movies. I think that works the other way as well.
