In less than a week, fans of the hit FX series Justified will be returning to Harlan county to witness Raylan Givens deliver his own brand of justice.

When we last left the gun-toting U.S. Marshall, Givens, Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) and Ava (Joelle Carter) were pinned down by gunfire from a couple of unknown assailants. Picking up right where the finale left off, fans of the series will be surprised to see what transpires in the conclusion of the stand-off and how Boyd’s life completely changes because of it.

Jumping ahead some time after that, viewers might be more surprised to learn that Boyd and Ava are now living together. While nothing is romantic at the moment, there are signs that things may become escalate at some point. Although, until that happens, Ava has Boyd under a strict set of rules and will waste no time throwing him out of her house. Fortunately for Boyd, he has no problem staying out of trouble – although certain problems do arise.

Fans of the wonderfully dimwitted Dewey Crowe (Damon Herriman) will be happy to know that Harlan’s most helpless white supremacist returns and sets out to frame Raylan Givens for a crime Crowe intends to commit. Considering Crowe’s inability to mentally process the severity of his actions, things don’t exactly go as planned, but hilarity ensues nonetheless.

With Boyd on a proverbial leash – at least for the moment – and Dewey Crowe being, well, Dewey Crow, the role of this season’s main antagonist goes to Mags Bennett (Margo Martindale) – a seemingly harmless matriarch figure that has deep ties to everything criminal in Harlan. Heading up the violent arm of the Bennett clan is Dickie Bennett (Jeremy Davies), Raylan’s high school rival. While Dickie may appear to be as intelligent as Dewey Crowe, viewers will quickly realize just how ingenious and extremely violent he is – something that makes for a suspenseful standoff between Raylan and Dickie.

For fans of the series that enjoyed the first season but disliked certain episodic storyline elements and the bad guy of the week premise that ran for the first 4 episodes, you’ll be happy to know that most – if not all – of season two’s storylines and story-arcs are continuous and will last for most of the season. Even when the second season does venture into specific episodic plots, it often involves familiar series characters, so everything feels very fluid.

Plus, there’s the return of the always wonderful Stephen Root as the spandex wearing Judge Mike Reardon to look forward to. Although, don’t expect to see him within the first month of Justified’s return.

Even though Justified is beginning its second season, there’s still enough time for new viewers to catch up on the adventures of Raylan Givens with the Justified season one DVD set. Fortunately if that’s not an option, newcomers will have no problem jumping in to the action.

  1. I also believe you can find Season One still playing On Demand via your cable company. At no charge.

  2. (FX has been running Season 1 late on Saturday nights as well.)
I love this show! When it debuted I was thinking it was a good place holder for SOA, but a couple episodes in and I was completely hooked. It’s well written and well acted with some of the most unique characters on series television.
Can you believe Walter Goggins’ Boyd Crowder wasn’t originally meant to be a regular? Love that guy! One never knows WHAT he’s gonna do.

  3. This show is one of the best on television at the moment.

    • I agree. Hopefully season two is stronger and not weaker.

      • From what I’ve seen (the first 3 episodes), it’s stronger.

        • Now that’s saying something! Excellent.

  4. We watched this show last year because my wife and I are Timothy Olyphant fans and have enjoyed his work for years. Well, I enjoy his work, my wife enjoys other things about him. ;) Anyway, really enjoyed this show, the writing is great, the dialogue and characters are witty and funny, and Walt Goggins is a positive in anything that he’s in. (BIG Shield fans over here!) So, very happy that this show is back earlier than expected. It helps to fill the painful hole in my heart since Breaking Bad won’t be back til June.

    • Joe The Shield is my all time fave show so I know where your coming from.

      • I LOVED The Shield like very few shows before or since. I watched it from the beginning, and my wife endlessly thanked me for convincing her to watch it as well. It was one of the best and I’m going to give The Chicago Code a chance next week. Hopefully, Shawn Ryan can strike gold again.

        • I watched from the beginning and the show was so consistently good. Even at it’s worst it was still amazing. It also had the absolute perfect ending so poetic. The Shield contains the most emotional moment in film history for me. The season 5 finale with Lem

  5. This is just what I needed to get excited for the return! I know I’m the shows target demographic being in my early twenties and a girl… but this just has something for everyone! Just seeing Olyphant in a cowboy hat again was my main draw, but the stories have definitely kept me interested.

  6. I love the show. It really is great for me though Walton is easily the scene stealer every time he shows up. The guy is such a great actor. Tim is good to, but I just gravitate toward Walton everytime he shows up because he has such a strong presence. I hope to see more of him in Season 2.

  7. i completely missed this show but everything ive heard is good so going to have to check it out

  8. So upset though to read Boyd and Ava may hook up. I really want Ava and Raylen to be together and I want him to stay the hell away from his ex wife really don’t like her and honestly they don’t fit together at all.

    • @DF who is not talking to me…. ;)

I saw that coming because Ava cant trust Raylan after going back to his ex and him getting caught. Boyd is supposedly a new man….. That and it creates (IMO) better friction with Raylan and Boyd.

Also maybe Ava is not as good as we think she is…..especially with a female leader in Mags Bennett being there she may have a reach into Ava that Bo Crowder couldn’t get after she killed his son. She also has a brother that is in trouble with the law I think.

Yeah I dont think she will stay as good as we think she wants to……

      • Aknot the not talking to you thing was intended for that one subject on that post and nothing else.

Anyway yea I saw it coming sort of, but not happy about it. However I know it won’t last and the plan is for her and Raylan to hook up again.

If you get the season 1 and watch Special features the creator and writers are talking about it all and they say the plan is to just keep bringing them together and pulling them apart. Basically Raylan and her will more than likely end the series together, but there will be all sorts of road blocks in the way like Boyd and Raylan’s wife.

        • DF just jabbing at you. ;)

Yeah I was reading an interview with the actress and (pardon my terrible memory) it was alluded she was still a bad girl. I think this was in October ’10.

The thing remains if they continue the series something will ahve to change or that will get old.

I can actually say one of the few times I reacted to a “relationship” scence was Raylan with his ex.. I was like WTF dude!

  9. Oh man I picked up on this show a little late but boy oh boy am I glad I did! I am not a big fan of cop shows at all to be honest but this show is different. Maybe its the superb writing or the like able characters or maybe its just that genuine southern charm. I’m only about halfway thru the first season so I didn’t wanna read anything that might spoil the rest of the season but I would like to see a bit more action. The action they have shown while very brief has been pretty solid I have to say. I feel like I’m watching a modern western when viewing this show I love Tims character! I hope season 2 rackets up the action and intensity and its good to see the character of Boyd returning, hes def a like able guy. I think this along with Southland are my top shows on cable I’m watching ATM. (excluding Dexter :])

  10. Season 2 first episode was a huge success! This is my ultimate favourite TV series in many years.Tim Olyphant is the young Clint Eastwood.Walton Goggins and several other cast members are superb! I even made certain I didn’t miss “Justified” while on vacation where I never normally turn on the TV. This new season will only get more intriging with each new episode:)
