Live-action comic book movie and TV adaptations are currently saturating the various platforms of the media landscape. Meanwhile, in the realm of Warner Bros. and DC’s animated features, a shared universe is already underway, kicked off by Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox and Justice League: War, followed up by the solo Batman adventures Batman: Assault on Arkham and the introduction of Damian Wayne in Son of Batman.

Early on in 2015, we will get our direct follow-up to the Justice League: War storyline – and introduction to Arthur Curry, a.k.a. Aquaman –  in the form of Justice League: Throne of Atlantis. The first exclusive clip for the animated origin story of the half-human, half-Atlantean hero can be seen above, courtesy of DC Entertainment, in a segment which also explores some of the other reveals at this past weekend’s New York Comic-Con 2014 as well.

Justice League Throne of Atlantis Trailer 2015 Justice League: Throne of Atlantis First Clip: Arthur Curry and the Lobster

We know from the trailer that Throne of Atlantis introduces a pre-Aquaman Arthur Curry (voiced by Matt Lanter) – who, in the wake of his human father’s death, is called upon to take his rightful place in Atlantis. Meanwhile, Prince Orm (the villain Ocean Master) calls for a war with the surface dwellers after the Atlantean king is killed (during the aftermath of the Justice League’s battle with Darkseid and Apokolips).

In the first clip, Curry is mourning his dad and finds comfort talking with a lobster. The brawl that follows gives us a glimpse of Curry’s superhuman strength, as well as the deep-seated toughness he’ll need as Aquaman.

Throne of Atlantis will also include the return of veteran DC animation voice talent, such as Jason O’Mara as Batman; Jerry O’Connell as Superman; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Christopher Gorham as The Flash; Sean Astin as Shazam; and Sumalee Montano as Mera. In addition, Rosario Dawson took on the role of Wonder Woman for this film, while Sam Witwer is joining the animated DCU as Prince Orm.

With the rumors about Aquaman’s inclusion in Batman v Superman going quiet recently – having been sparked anew by director Zack Snyder’s (alleged) passionate defense of the Atlantean to a Detroit radio station some months back – a proper introduction to Aquaman in the DC animation universe mirrors the plans for his own big-screen live-action solo adventure at some point. As it were, Throne of Atlantis should provide an orientation to both the Atlantean and his place within the Justice League, in advance of the World’s Finest movie pairing and the debut of several of the superhero team’s members.
