As we await Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s next installment in their shared movie universe – Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – their animated universe is picking up steam. Based on the comics’ New 52 continuity, the Justice League was given a revamped origin in Justice League: War, springing out of the events of Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox.
The story of their formative years continues this month with the release of Justice League: Throne of Atlantis. Watch a new clip (above) in which Batman and Superman do a little detective work to learn just who Arthur Curry (a.k.a. Aquaman) is.
Not so unlike how their earlier animated feature Batman: Assault on Arkham was something a test-run for the upcoming Suicide Squad, Throne of Atlantis could well be used to test the waters (pun intended) for the viability of the forthcoming Aquaman movie. At the very least, this film should educate viewers more about Aquaman, which could work well toward drumming up interest.
This clip, however, focuses solely on Batman and Superman. In it, we’re given a sense of their working relationship, with Batman begrudgingly allowing Superman to join him on his investigation. Turns out it was a good thing Supes was there. While there’s no doubt Batman would have figured the puzzle out, having Superman there to very quickly put the pieces together surely helps.
Since there’s been something of a pattern between these recent animated films and WB/DC’s planned feature films, it’s possible the rapport between this version of Batman and Superman is a hint of what’s to come in Batman v Superman. After they’re through fighting each other, that is.
With a subtitle like Dawn of Justice, it’s inevitable that Batman and Superman – and possibly Wonder Woman, too – will be fighting on the same side before the credits on BvS roll. But working together and being friendly aren’t the same thing, and it appears that both the cinematic and animated versions of Batman and Superman have a ways to go before becoming “best buds.”
Are you excited for the next installment in WB/DC’s animated superhero franchise, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis? What do you think of how they’re developing the camaraderie between Batman and Superman? Is it indicative of what we’ll see in Batman VS Superman?
Justice League: Throne of Atlantis will release on Blu-ray/DVD on January 27th.
