The Man of Steel is back in black as new footage from director Zack Snyder's upcoming cut of Justice League shows off Superman in action. Snyder's cut of Justice League will see the DC heroes come together to face off against Steppenwolf, an acolyte of Darkseid, the dark lord of Apokolips. The film has had an entirely unique existence, with this being the second time it's been released, though in a wholly different format.

Snyder departed production of Justice League due to clashes with the studio and a family tragedy. Avengers director Joss Whedon was brought in to rewrite and reshoot large portions of the film, resulting in a movie released in 2017 that pleased essentially no one. Whedon's Justice League bombed at the box office and was a dud with critics and fans alike. Spurred on by a massive online fan campaign, HBO Max brought Snyder back in to finish his version of the film, which will be a sprawling four-hour epic that will likely serve as Snyder's goodbye to the DC Extended Universe.

Fans now have a new look at Superman in action via the official Zack Snyder's Justice League Twitter account. The new footage shows off the Man of Steel in his brand new black suit, a nice nod to his comic book resurrection added in post-production, as he seemingly defends Cyborg from an unseen threat. Check out the footage below.

Snyder's version of Superman, in particular, has gotten plenty of criticism and has been a highly polarizing figure. Beginning with 2013's Man Of Steel, this was a more somber Superman, not nearly as sure of himself or humanity as the character traditionally is. Some found this to be a needed change to the character, an update for the 21st century, while many others saw it as a betrayal of what makes the character work.

Man Of Steel was a solid hit, but Snyder's followup, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, was met with scathing reviews and underperformed at the box office, leading Warner Bros. to re-evaluate their trust in Snyder's overall vision for the DCEU. Since the theatrical release of Justice League, DC films have taken a decidedly different approach, embracing a warmer, more earnest tone in films like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Shazam.

The future of Henry Cavill's Superman is in serious question. With the news that J.J. Abrams and Ta-Nahisi Coates are developing a new Superman film, it seems that Cavill's time in the cape and tights may be coming to an end. If that's the case, hopefully the Snyder cut of Justice League will be a worthy sendoff to a complicated version of DC's greatest hero.
