‘Justice League’ Will Compete With ‘The Avengers 2′ in Summer 2015

Avengers Justice League Solo Films Justice League Will Compete With The Avengers 2 in Summer 2015

Warner Bros/DC. is reported to have begun resurrecting plans for a Justice League movie before The Avengers hit theaters this past summer, but it was the overwhelming success of Joss Whedon’s Marvel comic book movie blockbuster that cemented the studios’ decision to move forward with their own superhero ensemble venture. Will Beall (writer of the much-buzzed-about Gangster Squad) is currently working on the script for the JL movie, while the search for a director is ongoing.

While it’s seemingly a given that Justice League will reboot the Batman franchise (in the aftermath of Christopher Nolan’s trilogy finale, The Dark Knight Rises), there has been some uncertainty about whether or not key new elements from the Superman mythos – featured in next summer’s Man of Steel – will be sustained in Beall’s script. Part of that can be attributed to Warner Bros.’ ongoing battle with co-creator Joe Shuster’s estates over the character rights (after their previous agreement runs out this year).

Following yesterday’s announcement that Warner Bros./DC has won its battle against the Shuster estate, the studios no longer have to be concerned about not being able to carryover unique elements from Man of Steel in future movies, TV shows, or even comic books. Hence, Justice League (which may have ties to Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot) is gearing up to begin production next year, in order to make a summer 2015 release date. That means the film will compete with Marvel’s The Avengers 2 for the superhero movie box office crown – though, it goes without saying that the two will be hitting the big screen at different times of the season (to allow one another room to breath).

The LA Times expects development on Justice League to meet that target date, as progress should accelerate in the aftermath of the court victory for Superman rights. It appears the studios’ plan is indeed to take the opposite route that Marvel took to shared universe constructionJL will therefore be the first in a new wave of DC movies to hit theaters after Man of Steel, with the subsequent films arriving in the forms of standalone vehicles for JL members such as Wonder Woman, The Flash, and possibly a rebooted Green Lantern arriving sometime thereafter (assuming JL proves to be a satisfactory success).

The ball is now in Warner Bros./DC’s court, in terms of the risks and daring moves the studios are willing to take with Justice League (in addition to forgoing five movies of buildup, like what The Avengers had). We’ve offered our own advice on such matters as how to go about assembling the DC shared universe, how to properly reboot Batman post-Nolan, and even how incorporating an unusual DC anti-hero like Lobo could be an important maneuver to help set apart JL from Avengers. It’s now up to Warner Bros./DC to find a candidate as qualified for the directing job as Joss Whedon proved to be for the task of bringing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes together on the big screen (free advice: people like McG and Brett Ratner really don’t seem to meet that criteria).

  1. Well, this is interesting. I am hoping for a great JL movie. I am not a huge DC fan, but I do like their characters.

As far as a villain for this movie is concerned, I think Darkseid would be a tough sell. He has such a huge back story that I think you would need a trilogy to really tell it.

I am thinking (and this may be lame) that with the team movie coming first, the villains may also be a team (Injustice Gang?) so that the offshoot movies after the fact have somewhere to go that makes sense.

Having a villain like Braniac or Starro, though a very cool indea, would lead to the heroes having nowhere to go after the fact, whereas having a team of villains to include someone from each rogues gallery would provide for future individual stories.

    • Couldn’t have said it better myself. This is exactly what I was thinking.

    • I think DC doesn’t need to start like Marvel since Superman and Batman would be enough to be a big ticket seller, plus the timing would be right going head-to0head with Avengers 2. Plus some of the league members have weak rogues.

      • Ya think? I suppose the long, long history of Superman and Batman movies and TV shows, plus Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman from back in the day are enough to pique my interest in a group flick but what about the yunguns who weren’t privy to that?

    • I think the idea of a supervillain team is cool in terms of a comic book movie, but they’d have to set it up with individual stories first. If the JL movie is gonna be the first one, with each character only getting indie movies after that, then it’ll be harder to do a villain team – sounds like too many characters to juggle.

Although, I could envision having maybe a two-three villain setup, with one main villain (from Superman’s rogue gallery maybe? Bigger threats) and secondary villains working into the plot – maybe Deadshot or Joker or something.

      • Depending on how they use him in Man of Steel (if at all.) I think the villain will probably be Lex Luthor involved. Not him, exactly, because he can’t go toe-to-toe with any of the league members…but he’ll be there.

      • Hopefully they don’t forget about statick shock

      • Hopefully they don’t forget about static shock

    • I see nothing wrong with using the Starro. It IS what brought the original group together in the comics and they could use that as a base for making the movie and, like the comic story, eventually get together to form the JLA.

You then devote JL2 to the formation of The Legion of Doom (since the villains can’t hope to compete against the JL solo) and introduce Brainiac at the end. Then conclude JL3 with Brainiac’s taking over of the world, and The LoD joining the JL to combat him. Not sure how it could be any more epic without bringing in the likes of Darkseid but I would personally save him for Superman.

  2. Sometimes, when I am off for a week…I tend to think.

Want a Justice League Movie, to unite the Justice League into forming…Make the Antagonist..Superman

Luthor Exposes him to Red Kryptonite, and he goes bad, and defeat 4 of the Other Heroes, which forces Batman to intervene and start forming the Justice League.

Start with each hero attempting to stop Superman alone, and getting defeated.

Batman does not fight Superman, he comes up with the Heroes forming. To stop Superman

Here comes the twist…..Luthor planned it to get the few Heroes out of the way, so he can focus on an even more grandiose plan….A Plan that will backfire because he did not think, the combined egos of those Heroes could work together………….

Now for the rest of the Screen Ranters….Put your own spin on it.

    • That would be definitively an unusual and awesome plot! :D

    • Hmm, interesting. The thing is, the twist sounds very similar to the Avengers. Villain bringing the heroes together for whatever reason, but plan backfires and the heroes work together to defeat villain.

      • I suggested something similar, a fair while ago, but I was thinking the red Krypton could be dropped. Have the world being in a state of panic with the emergence of Superman and his potential for destruction (think Hancock) while he is finding his feet and moral code.

This brings each hero out of hiding to confront Supes. Luthor could play on their fears and even bring the team together to take on Supes.

Superman faces down all of them as a team in the climax, stopping short of killing anyone, deciding instead that he is thoroughly unwanted on Earth so he leaves.

Supes takes off, and we see Luthor has been planning this all along, revealing another big bad as part of his plan, who will take prime villain duties in the sequel.

The sequel shows the team needs Superman, who returns just in time to help them overthrow the threat.

  3. I think that DC could have as much success if not more I just believe they should take the time and do it right, like Marvel did.

  4. It is really difficult to comment on boards like these because we all love superheroes too much… Too much Marvel vs. DC going on here in these comments… We have to remember – the general public does not know and does not care about DC vs. Marvel… I say we all should enjoy the fact that our beloved superheroes are now in the limelight… Look at this year alone – the two top movies are Avengers & DKR… Throw in Spiderman and we have 3 of the top 5… This is an amazing time to be a comic book fan – DC or Marvel… Enjoy it while it lasts… I’ve loved superheroes since I was 3 and it has never mattered to me DC or Marvel… I support & love both…

    • AGREED.

I’m am simply not a hardcore Marvel nor DC fan, I am a SUPERHERO FAN. Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, X-Men… doesn’t matter to me. Just make a solid movie out of each and I’m a happy camper!

    • I love DC & Marvel, I have for many, many, years. But I do lean to one side, I don’t want to but I can’t help it. It’s like it’s built into my DNA of something.

But you are right of course. What a great time to be a comic book fan and I will continue to love and support both franchises.

    • Go superhero movies!! That’s also why I’m upset that there’s no “they’ll both be awesome” option in the poll. Everyone here clearly loves superhero movies, and the poll forces us to choose between Marvel and DC. Why choose? See both JLA and Avengers 2, and they’ll both be great in their own different ways.

      • Agreed. Especially about the poll.

But also bare in mind, much of the debate is about the respective companies’ abilities to realize their properties and do them justice in a feature film.

        Not the properties themselves.

And seeing these properties well realized is a sentiment we can all share, no doubt.

    • Cake That is why many of these suck they try to appeal to those Not typically interested in that Genre. It’s like playing Lady Gaga or Emenem on a Classic Country Radio station. These folks need to stop making movies for audiences who are not into Sci-fi action films. There is a reason Chick Flicks don’t typically appeal to the average male audience.

  5. My dream come through- JL movie and they are NOT using the Marvel method. Those Marvel lead up movies to the Avengers weighed too heavily on the Avengers movie imo. The DC animations stand alone…I don’t hear anyone complaining…Wtf….

    • The animated movies are good, some great, but as a non-comic expert I do often feel like they don’t set-up side characters very well in them. This was also true to some small extent in the later WB animated series post-Batman TAS. And I think the continuity of the series format helped a lot into making those some of the best shows ever, and best versions of the characters.

If they skip the buildup in cinemas the average audience member may feel lost, too, unless they get a good writer to really nail their intros in the JL film. People generally know who Batman and Superman are, and to some extent Wonder Woman (I’d wager most still think of the 70′s TV series, though, much like everyone thought of Batman as Adam West pre-Burton’s film.)

It’s a tall order to launch JL cold and do it right, but of course it can be done. I hope WB is up to the challenge and willing to commit the resources to do it. The film will need an appropriate threat that works for these characters and feels dangerous, and we also need to see the character interaction and be intrigued enough to care what happens. Seems simple and obvious, but it’s amazing how many movies fail at providing these things.

      • Exactly. Marvel had an insurmountable task in making The Avengers work with all those characters, giving each of them their ‘moment’, and that was with lead-in films.

The JL movie can work, but it can never rival The Avengers’ pacing to exposition ratio while maintaining character investment. Without lead-in films, something will have to give.

I’d certainly prefer a slower drawn out film/s that keep the character investment front and center, then an explosive one that skimps on fleshing out the peripheral characters.

So until they announce a planned trilogy, I will remain skeptical that the film will be great. Hopefully it is at least good enough to not tarnish all the collective properties in the public eye, so we can at least have some more.

        • Remember Watchmen? Nailed it perfectly without any of those characters having an independent movie. There are so many great Justice League comic books or animated series that could be adapted to the big screen.
I also saw the Watchmen movie before getting a chance to read the book.

          • Problem is, while Watchmen was a success to fans and critics, it only made $180 million worldwide on a $130 million budget (not including advertisement). While that may be fine, studios want a lot more. Money talks in Hollywierd.

          • Watchmen however started out as an assemble group of heroes, there were not indvidual characters for them, there Was the Watchmen from the get go.

Justice League however, to many heroes with their own indivdual comics/story lines.

Watchmen did not need a build up, fans of Watchmen knew who and what they were getting.’

            You cannot compare the two.

  6. The buildup to Avengers is what led to it being so anticipated and feeling like a major movie event. I don’t think Justice League will have that same feeling at all. DCs characters are icons, though, so maybe they can skip all the introductions and just show them onscreen doing what they do. Time will tell… hopefully WB can actually get a superhero series going (besides Batman) for a change.

  7. I am all in for a JLA movie…but it feels incredibly rushed right now; I personally think if they take their time with it ; we could be in for something amazing.

  8. The Avengers is my team and I stand with them!

  9. what really needs to be done is this…. keep only three main characters kal-el, diana and bruce… have wayne receive a massive government contract from steve trevor of course kent is there to cover it aswell as the rest of the other media big dogs, after all this is a big massive contract that can (insert whatever reason here)…. then lets say the lex finds out what this massive (insert whatever here) can be used for(insert catastrophic reason here)… as for the main villains keep them simple dont over do it lex would be a good start then form there we can bring in some lesser knowns from each of the they’re respective rogues galleries (Mister Mxyzptlk for superman not really a lesser known but you get the drift, Anarky for batman & Veronica Cale for wonder woman)…. this way when the sequel comes out you go a lil bigger, so that by the time the third installment comes out its on a massive scale where the league has already been established with the remainder/rest of cast, the L.O.D. is established and all hell breaks loose in the third final chapter

  10. I think that two Villains like Darkseid and Despero could fight each other for something in common in earth, and humanity is just in the middle, and here is were justice league fit in, to defend earth. Kind of Transformer basic plot, that could be huge mess on earth, thats worth of the greatest super heroes to reunite…

    • Besides watching the justice league against the villains, it could be so cool to see both villains fighting each other, they can destroy a galaxy if they put enough effort…

  11. People keep saying this movie feels rushed but it not due out till June 2015. It is curently October 2012(NOTE I will never understand the movie industry). But if you want to give Wonder Woman an enmeny how about Cheetah. With A few well placed prostecis peices, body paint, and A CGI tail and the fan boys will go nuts. Hey if the actress playing Mysteque can be almost naked why not.

  12. darkseid needs to be in the final act of the third film. remember folks this has been in the talks for awhile and since avengers kinda started the bar for hero team movies JLA needs to start simple with the first. and just incase this/it does becomes a blockbuster flick, present a big/major threat in the second with new JLA team members added and a big villain/s, end it with a cliffhanger then bring out the big guns for the third which should be darkseid

  13. This is awesome news, I’ve always been a massive DC fan and this is a dream come true, I mean Superman and Batman, can you get any bigger? The Avengers was a bit of a let down for me, maybe its because ive never been into Marvels characters that much but I’m sure a good JL movie could smash that if they did it properly, and please DC/WB make an Aquaman film! There is so much you could do with this character, you could create a beautiful underwater world, I don’t see why they won’t do it, Aquaman kicks ass, hes so underrated, the same with Wonder women, would love a WW film as well but
starting off with a JL is the way to go, then branch off from that, starting with a new Batman.

  14. People won’t make choices, most will see both like myself, I prefer the DC characters and will be much more excited to see a JL film, But I’ll still spend my money on both, so I don’t see how this is a face off? JL and Avengers will both clean up at the box office, and for people that say DC need character development for it to work make me laugh, DC have iconic characters that have been around forever, if you don’t know who they by now then what rock have you been living under?

    • Having Iconic characters is one thing. Getting the right group of actors to be in an assemble movie such as Justice League is another.

The Characters mean crap, if the actors are not able to bring those characters to life.

  15. When a movie is announced like Justice League, and when it all comes down to are a few things.

1 WORD OF MOUTH. Despite what some people say, word of mouth spreading around the internet can impact a movie. Director, actors, story. All plays a factor into it.

2 Comparison. WB/DC Cant go with the formula for The Avengers. The Avengers had a build up, and we knew what were going to get, because we senn the Avengers in their own movies, build up and we either liked them, or we didnt. When it came down to the fact we saw all of Phase 1 Movies, we knew what actors were going to mesh and work well within the film. We had good chemistry, and it made for an enjoyable film experience. Can WB/DC Throw together a bunch of Actors they think the audience will adhere to and root for? Do we want to hear about how the film is developing, do we want to hear how the actors are fighting. Ok, say Christian Bale said he wanted to be Batman in the Justice League Movie, they say..”No, we are going with a different actor.” Will there be an uproar or applause? Ok, they then get all of the actors in the roles, and one is arrogant and demands this, and demands that, and you have the rest are actors who are trying to get to “A-List” status.

You can have a bunch of actors in a movie who do not get along, and trust me the movie is not going to be that great. One bad Justice League movie, with a 250 Million dollar budget does not even break even, That is the end of any future Justice League movie, and perhaps any more hero movies.

So let WB/DC Try and copy The Avengers. If they do not have any of the mentioned above, they will fail.

  16. See this is where WB/DC Bit themselves in their collective Asses. If you get a Justice League Movie, it will be based on The New 52.

And here are points that cannot be argued of altered. Not because of what I say, but because what DC Has done.

If they decide to go Old School Justice League, then they are saying The New 52 is not working. If they Go New 52, Everyone who grew up with Wally West and John Stewart as Flash and Green Lantern are going to be like..WTF. Who is Barry Allen and who is Hal Jordan.

New 52 Justice League is going to be dramatically different….Because Those Heroes are not the Icons we all know and love. No one who is over 30 is going to accept a cocky and brash Superman, because that is who we did not know or grow up reading.

A Womanizing Batman, A Wonder Woman who is looked on more as a Woman, than a hero and with less character development.

Superman and Lois Lane are no more than co-workers. Bruce Wayne with a little bit of swagger and arrogance on who he is, and a Batman who thinks planting a lip lock on Wonder Woman will woo her? Not the heroes I grew up with, and with the majority of Movie public had grown up on Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, all the history and all their triumphs all blown up and rebooted into the New 52…The New 52 is not going to appeal to the vast majority of the crowds, I liked Avengers and saw it three times int the theaters, I doubt I would see New 52 Justice League more than once.

    • Well, since Barry Allen and Hal Jordan were the Flash and Green Lantern prior to Wally and John, I think it is better to use those 2 characters. It has nothing to do with the “New 52″. I have to imagine they are going original JLA here. Hal and Barry were in that group.

      • Doom, you would think, but in all seriousness. Can DC/WB Justify The New 52 if they made a big budget movies based on the characters they rebooted?

Would say The New 52 is not working, or they think people will buy anything despite what is told to them.

        • I dont see why the movie has to have anything to do with that. I would venture a guess that at least 50% or more of the people going to see this movie will have no idea what the “New 52″ even is. To be 100% honest, I havent bought a new comic book on a regular basis in about 8-10 years and I still go to see every comic book movie that comes out. I do keep my ear to the ground to know whats going on in the comic books, but havent actually bought too many in that time period.

I am actually quite curious to know how many people read the “New 52″ as compared to the people who do not.

The JLA movie should be an entity of its own with the characters everyone knows the way they were originally intended. That is just my opinion though.

          • I share your opinion, but I look at it from a monetary standpoint. Will WB/DC Chuck the Originals for the New 52…No one knows yet.

          • I 100 to 1000 to infinity% agree with your comment. ive been in and out of the comic world for years and everytime a new or reboot comes out i go see it and renews an interest again.. my thing is make a generation 1 movie first to school all the noobs then go with your variant stories from there if you introduce them right and respectively it will be huge. kudos sir.

  17. I’m so sick of Lex Luther. Why can’t there be a Superman movie that doesn’t get into his origin? One where it already assumes that we know the story and Superman is already known as an Earth superhero. Then we can have him face a super villain like Solomon Grundy?

  18. I can tell you that I am not a huge DC fan, but the fact that The Avengers 2 and the JLA are coming out at around the same time has blown my mind. However, after watching the The Avengers and looking out for the second one, I realised that 2015 is still a long way away. I think that the JLA will have to be amazing to have a chance along-side The Avengers, seeing as The Avengers have a head start. but to me, the idea of 2 superhero teams competing for a crown is brilliant. 2015 is going to be a year to remember.

  19. For those of you who think nobody knows who DC comic charters are let me tell you something. A few months ago I took 6 paperback books to work with me to leave in the breakroom. Three of the were based on comic book series Countdown,52,and Infante Crisis. Enemys and Allies A story of how Batman met Superman set in the 50′s. Along with the novelations of the Anamated Wonder Woman movie and Iron Man 2. Long story short all the DC book have been taken home by other people IM2 is still there.

    • Also, could have been people who buy Marvel on a regular basis and wanted to read something different.

    • I’m really looking forward to the JL movie. I am bot a Dc and Marvel fan but in certain areas of media learn towards the other. The way the JL movie can be good is to be like Avengers, People say that they shouldn’t but they do need to replicate some of its formula. The reason Avengers was such a big hit is because it appealed to basically everyone. It was fun witty action packed and suspenseful. The Fans where happy and the casual movie goer was happy. Another thing they did was they didn’t make the characters perfect 2 Dimensional god like beings. They had exploitable weaknesses and flaws. Iron Man was the joker. Hes selfish Arrogant and like Cap said only fights for himself. He then has to step up after a dear friend is killed due to his arrogance and brashness. Thor who has now come to love Earth feel that his presence is the reason for all the suffering due to the threat being Loki his brother who he had failed to save. So in a way he is not only trying to save the world but the villain too. Black Widow was defo the most interesting a woman who has spent her whole life killing looking for a bit of redemption hoping that by joining these heroes she can redeem herself even though she knows deep done she cant. Hulk Was also a great one two hes conflicted because the place he can do the most good is the place he can do the most harm (quote from deleted scene). And Cap is basically in this new alien world where everyone he previously known is dead and the only place that he has any safety in is Shield, yet they continuously lie to him (Hydra weapons, the cube). The Justice League need to be like that Superman needs to have weaknesses and not just be a ‘God among us mere mortals’ That’s actually one of the reasons I think the movie may not work because well The JL are to damn powerful and the powers will be hard to replicate on screen. But hopefully the characters all get time to shine in the movie an don’t get over shadowed by Supes, Batman and Wonder Woman.

    • You must have really s***** co workers if they steal your stuff

  20. Avengers two or any christopher nolan batman movie will rule over all other superhero films, just as long as their not animated and packed with action.

  21. As stoked as I will be for a shared universe movie from DC about their ensemble cast for their iconic superheroes in 2015, I am, however, quiet cautious about the Warner leadership unconventionally introducing these gestating figures through one explosive plot. Trying to introduce each of the separate characters through one movie is a dauntingly risky move, not only from a fiscal point of view but from a thematic one. What concerns us more is the latter one. Clearly, trying to write a story that will properly be able to encompass all the different background story arch of Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Flash and reboot Batman will convolute the overall story, thereby making it difficult for audiences to encapsulate the overall picture. Generally speaking, good movies are attuned to niche storylines. It would make sense to follow the marvel path by giving a fair amount of attention to all of our superheroes separately and then bringing them together into one JLA movie, even if it will mean postponing the date for a JLA movie for another three years. Remember, stalling the movie would be an infinitely better option than doing a horrible job of it and single handedly making it a colossal embarrassment as well as ruining potential sequels. However, if done well, this unconventional method could perhaps turn out to be a novelty strategy. Such would only be possible if the Warner Bros. entourage could somehow focus on as little characters as possible, thereby developing more effectively on a more restricted story arch, while leaving the climactic buildup as being open to the calling out for the need for other superheroes for protection from even greater threats in future movies. This, then, could be a more subtle approach to introducing Flash and other heroes alike. This would be akin to Michael Bay’s first Transformers movie, where Optimus Prime, at the end of the movie, steps up on top of a hill calling out to other surviving protagonists, asking them to unite for even greater evils to come. As a huge DC fan, I will want Warner Bros. to get their eggs in one basket (or separate ones!) and consider approaching this sensitive situation cautiously regardless of how they approach the JLA team. After all, this movie in 2015, or the lack thereof, will determine the future of the other JLA cast members and whether they will be able to compete with their Marvel counterparts.

  22. If dc ever changes christopher nolans part as batman I will f**king hate watching batman again.

  23. If dc ever changes christopher nolans part as batman I will really fawking hate watching batman again.

  24. If dc ever changes christopher nolans part as batman I will never watch batman again.

  25. Not looking that forward to JL and it’s spinoffs.
Nobody cares about most of their characters besides avid comic fans.

People care about Batman, and Superman, that’s it. People have already shown they do not care about Green lantern, they won’t care about the flash, and they won’t care about aquaman. at most this is a 3 hour movie, how will people care about these other characters in a short amount of time?

    • If the film is crafted with care, people will care and enjoy the film and the cinematic universe created…just like the Marvel universe and its previously lesser known characters. History has already proven your assumption patently false.

Now, whether WB/DC pulls it off successfully is another matter that IS still open for debate…

I am hoping they do and believe they can.

  26. Personally, i think the idea of having the JLA first is just silly. It needs to go though and make each movie so that the people that never read comics know how each hero came about, got there powers etc. Having said that. i do look forward to this movie, im just hoping they dont stuff it up by trying to rush it.

  27. i think doomsday will make a great villan because he can kill superman

  28. i don’t get why so many people are arguing about this movie compared to the avengers, you should just watch it and see how it turns out not shoot them down before they can get started. that said there are some things i would like to see in this movie that might attract some more audiences.

This should be at least a 3 part movie so they can get a good story going, and if there is any romance pairing they should pair up.

batman/wonder woman (sense they will probably be rebooting batman, and an animate series made them popular)
superman/Lois lane (they were extremely popular in comics and shows/movies)
green lantern/hawk girl (if in it)

that’s if there is any romance. if you do that this could be big just don’t completely focus around the romances, just give them. that’s just my opinion. it would also be good to make it a darker type of movie that others have described but not insainly so.

    • as someone on a different site said the romance if any between wonder woman could start with them having a duel and batman saying or doing something stupid and wonder woman takes him down then the next scene she can be holding an ice pack for him.

      • dang it sorry messed up at start.. *a spar between batman and wonder woman*

  29. is it just me or is it a sign that wonder woman and bats should be…. when i type “wonder woman loves” on google, bing, and youtube and the first choice to finish it is “batman” and when i put “batman loves” it gives “wonder woman” for the first choice.
