The DC Extended Universe version of the Justice League assembles in 2017, under the direction of Man of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice helmsman Zack Snyder. The DCEU’s Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) have already been properly introduced to moviegoers. Thus, one of Justice League‘s big goals will be to ensure that its additions to the DCEU’s meta-human collection – notably, Barry Allen/The Flash (Ezra Miller), Victor Stone/Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Jason Momoa) – make as good or better an impression on the filmgoing masses as their predecessors.
Momoa as Aquaman has already begun to resonate with the masses, as evidenced by the number of memes and/or gifs that have popped up – using the footage of the character featured in the Justice League trailer that debuted at San Diego Comic-Con 2016. Now, however, we can add another fun Aquaman-related image to the growing pile, thanks to Snyder.
Snyder posted the following image of Momoa on the Justice League set to his Twitter account – showing the Game of Thrones alum dressed in his full Aquaman costume and playing a tune on the guitar, too.
This Justice League set photo also provides another look at Momoa in his Aquaman armor – albeit through the darker filter of Snyder’s camera, instead of the more brightly-colored official Justice League cast photo that was released back during this year’s Comic-Con. Aquaman’s DCEU outfit carries over the green and golden-orange color scheme that the character’s armor typically has in his DC Comics appearances. Like other Justice League DCEU costumes designed by Michael Wilkinson, Momoa’s costume is more practical for combat purposes – even compared to his armor from the more recent New 52 and DC Rebirth comic book iterations.
Right now, the hope is that the one-two punch of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman movie and Snyder’s Justice League will help the DCEU to win more fans – or, at the least, become less divisive post-Man of Steel, Batman V Superman, and Suicide Squad – before Momoa’s Aquman gets his own solo DCEU film in 2018, from director James Wan. As mentioned, Momoa is already shaping up to be a memorable addition to the DCEU when he properly debuts his take on Arthur Curry in Justice League. So, having him onboard should only help that cause – all the more so if it results in more mid-production photos like this being released.
Suicide Squad is in theaters now. Wonder Woman opens on June 2, 2017; Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020.
