A full-blown Justice League movie may have been the stuff of dreams for decades, but Warner Bros. and DC Comics are finally putting the wait to an end. Come Summer 2015, DC’s greatest heroes will unite to fight a common threat (and skeptical moviegoers). But exactly who those heroes will be has, to this point, been unclear.

The newest batch of rumors apparently reveal the character roster for Justice League, as well as a few details on their onscreen personalities. We’d file these squarely under RUMOR for now, for a few reasons we’ll get to in a minute.

With much of the Justice League attention of late centering around the apparent selection of Darkseid as the main villain, and a comic book storyline reportedly inspiring the script, not much thought has been given to who would be constituting the superhero team itself. Sure, Wonder Woman, Superman (fresh off of Man of Steel), The Flash and a brand new Batman will be on hand – but four people a ‘league’ do not make.

Even mainstays like Hal Jordan have had their future brought into question via films like the abysmal Green Lantern, and the jury is still out on which properties WB will see as packing the most potential for spin-off film franchises. Not to mention, which ones will help develop themes for the next round of installments and sequels.

Justice League Movie Launch DC Universe Rumored Justice League Character Roster Addresses Continuity Issues

The roster has changed much over the years, but we know WB and DC will likely choose their cast based on both present bankability and potential for the future. Will Beall (Gangster Squad) is still working away on the “dark and matureJustice League script, but according to CosmicBookNews, their sources have the details on who will be appearing, and how they’ll be behaving.

None of these details will come as a surprise to those either familiar with DC’s history, their New 52 relaunch, or the latest news on the Justice League movie – which is only further reason to take this report with a grain of salt. But first, we’ll focus on the rumored roster:

• Superman is essentially the same character from Man of Steel, and Zack Snyder is consulting regarding the writing of the character.

• Batman: The strategist of the group. Batman doesn’t really want to be involved with these super powered beings he considers too powerful. Easily the most complex written.

• Wonder Woman: She has only been in man’s world a few short months. The Wonder Woman script Michael Goldenberg is developing will be set before the Justice League movie.

• Green Lantern: Will be Ryan Reynold’s character from the Green Lantern movie, but will be freshly written with a more serious tone.

• Flash: The most popular hero in civilian eyes who loves media attention, but when called upon is very serious.

• Martian Manhunter: Alien who has lived on Earth in secret for over a hundred years who has knowledge of Darkseid and his reign.

• Aquaman: Will be the King of Atlantis who has a key role in the film.

• There will also be a heavy military presence in the film which in future rewrites could include characters featured in Man of Steel or even Amanda Waller (Angela Bassett) of which neither are included in the first draft.

• Alfred Pennyworth is in the film in a minor appearance.

• Lois Lane is also in the film in a cameo.

• Darkseid’s Elite will be featured who go up against the Justice League early on in the film.

Obviously, there aren’t any bombshells in these latest reports, which (while potentially divisive) would constitute more of a “scoop.” Superman will be Snyder’s version of the character (we’ll see how true that remains if Man of Steel fails to resonate with audiences) and Green Lantern will be, similarly, a continuation of what preceded. We, like many, are still curious about seeing at least the introduction of John Stewart or a new Hal Jordan, but there’s no telling how massive an overhaul might be deemed a “freshly written” approach.

It stands to reason that Hal Jordan would be less of a joker than in Ryan Reynolds’ previous stint, given the presence of The Flash. While Barry Allen wasn’t traditionally the same wise-cracker as Wally West, the New 52 incarnation perfectly fits the “must love media attention” description; he’s also the only hero with an actual museum built to his accomplishments.

Given DC’s decision to show the members of the League becoming aware of one another’s existence (and their potency when working together) first, then potentially showing how each of them got to that point in their own standalone films, the Wonder Woman details aren’t shocking. While we assumed that these heroes would get origin stories eventually, hints that Michael Goldenberg’s Wonder Woman will be filling in backstory could be a sign of what’s to come in DC’s second wave of superhero movies. A risky formula, but one we’ve hypothesized could end up working.

Since Superman will be the only hero with an introduction film come Justice League (and arguably Batman, since his origin story never changes) it also cements the fact that he’ll be acting as the anchor for larger audiences – as if that was ever in doubt. That makes an appearance by Lois Lane far easier to understand, even if Amy Adams isn’t confirming her involvement in sequels (and the Man of Steel trailer left their relationship somewhat in question).

As for Gotham’s caped crusader, “strategist” is the role that we pitched as the best direction for a Batman reboot, and his being the most complex character of the group is as much a given as the cowl. The Alfred inclusion seems the most dubious and subject to change: Michael Caine has said he’d love to appear in the role again, but given his character’s fate at the end of The Dark Knight Rises and the unclear Bruce Wayne/John Blake legacy (and casting) that’s far from a sure thing. A clever way to incorporate Nolan’s Batman into JL, yes, but such a move only raises more issues.

That being said, these rumored appearances raise some important questions about how ‘grounded’ Justice League will, or should be. If Darkseid is the villain, then our heroes will need someone to fight. Darkseid’s Elite would fit the bill, but the more the door to the realms of New Genesis and Apokolips is opened, the more Warner Bros. leaves behind the world of Nolan’s Batman and treads into Marvel’s territory. Bringing in some outlandish characters could prove worthwhile, but is risky.

Of course, Man of Steel’s time spent on Krypton and the battles between Kal-El and Zod could change everything we know about DC’s live-action plans. Even Aquaman has earned his stripes in the rebooted “Justice League” and “Aquaman” comic books this year, so clearly anything’s possible; count on a slow-burn introduction to Martian Manhunter, though.

We’d still recommend treating any and all Justice League rumors as just that, since there is plenty of source material to draw upon and almost no official details have been released so far. When the studio comments, we’ll keep you up to date. Until then, we can only speculate.

Justice League could hit theaters as early as 2015, but Warner Bros. has yet to reveal a concrete release date.

  1. lets see they got green lantern and superman, flash and ww should be easy castings batman is gonna be hardest to pick an actor. bale is still my fav batman

    • I actually think Batman is the easiest to cast. Even Clooney had a lot of good moments as Batman (unfortunately the script was so bad that the movie was ruined anyway). Batman is just such a malleable superhero that any director or actor can shape it to their own vision, as we’ve seen in the past. It’s the Bat-suit and background that most sparks people’s imagination, anyway.

The others are a lot harder to cast correctly, because they don’t have as much widespread popularity — with the exception of Superman and Wonder Woman, but even these two are tough to cast because they don’t wear masks and everybody has a firm image of how they both ought to look like.

  2. I’m somewhat shocked Cyborg was left out. Yeah, I know he would be the “token black guy” but he’d still be a very good representation of the “modern hero” as well.

Still, I suppose I’m glad they chose Martian Manhunter as he certainly makes the most sense as far as somebody who can inform the Justice League of Darkseid’s plans. And I guess it’s entirely possible they could hire a black actor to play him, lol :P

  3. STOP. WAIT A FEW YEARS BEFORE MAKING A JLA MOVIE. FOR GOD’S SAKE, FOR ONCE CAN WE SEE ONE COMPANY WHO VALUES QUALITY OVER MARKETING? Don’t BS this universe! Start over. From scratch, starting with Man of Steal. Please. I wish this could happen.

    • Isn’t that exactly what’s happening?

      • I thought so to.

    • Andrew is right dude, what you’re describing is EXACTLY what DC is doing.

  4. All white people and only 1 woman, very diverse.

    • Well, one green person, lol :P

      • so…exactly like the Avengers… :O

        • There is Fury though who was turned black. Maybe they can do a quick touch up and turn Superman black and re cast Shaq to play The Man of Steel… AGAIN! LOL

    • Don’t forget the Martian.

    • why does it matter? The characters are the characters. Get over it.

    • Martian Manhunter can disguise as a black guy

      • J’onn J’onzz was black in a few of the cartoons. Although white in The New Frontier. He probably will be black though. They can still introduce John Stewart and the rest of the Corps. That would be awesome!

  5. I still think John Stewart should be the GL. If WB just wants the 2011 GL movie to just go away then use John Stewart. Not too many other superheroes out there you can just use a different character without causing any ruffles from past movies / portrayals. Green Lanterns are multiple characters so why not take advantage introducing another one that will likely catch on better.

    • That may be true, but I’m kind of glad WB isn’t copping out on the Silver Age Green Lantern just yet.

      • After all, it took Marvel three tries to get Hulk right.

        • ^^ This

    • They should bring John Stewart in and have Reynolds return for the GL solo movies with a possible cameo from John Stewart.

  6. this movie already sound like the rough drizzles.

  7. If WB somehow makes this film work I want to see Red Tornado in a sequel or Hawkman. Hawkmans awesome, kind of like DCs counterpart to Wolverine.

  8. I will NOT be seeing this Justice League Movie. It looks like a Box-Office Flop in the making. Marvel has really shown how a comic book movie universe can be done. It’s gonna be VERY hard for DC to top all of Marvel’s work in 1 movie!

  9. A few weeks ago a friend and I were talking about the Justice League movie, we were discussing how to integrate Nolans Batman into that film. We kinda geeked out when we decided upon how it would have been cool if at the end of The Dark Knight Rises its actually Superman who saves Batman from the Nuke. He would just show up. And Pull the Bat far away.

    • That would be the ONLY way to make it work. Have Bale back and have John Blake be Nightwing. It could be leaked to the press that during the events if TDKR that Batman had help from some mystery person called Robin, thus startig the Batman and Robin legacy….

    • @Kingrex32

The issue with that route would be where the hell was Superman during the months that Gotham was occupied by Bane’s forces.

Gotham’s takeover was shown all over the news and addressed by the President himself. Superman could’ve just flown in taken out Bane and the League of Shadows and just thrown the nuclear bomb into outer space. Job done in five minutes and would’ve cut out about 50 minutes of TDKR’s running time.

      • @lebsta

Your logic is air tight unfortunately Bain said in his address at the football stadium that any interference from the outside world and they would trigger the bomb. I for one want that batman tied in with JL if not then the reboot better be very good.

        • yeah, but you would think Superman would be able to act before Bane could even lift a finger.

          • Bane wasnt the trigger man though it was Talia remember.

        • @Acein210

I agree too that it would be better for Bale’s Batman to be in the JL movie. It would provide audiences with that familiarity, plus carry the fanbase from Nolan’s universe over thus increasing the chances of the JL movie being successful. Just imagine if Downey Jnr had been replaced for Avengers. That would’ve hurt that film’s success greatly.

The best way to incorporate Batman into a JL universe would be to first confirm that Bruce Wayne is alive (even though we know anyway) Have him see how crime ridden Gotham has become, from the fallout of Bane’s forces releasing all the criminals from BlackGate. Realising that the task is too great to defeat the criminals on his own he then has to look for assistance. Primarliy Superman helps him first, thus the roots of the Justice League are grown.

  10. They simply can’t add Aqua-Man. I really don’t think they will. The same reason why Avengers didn’t have Ant-Man or Wasp. If Aqua-Man has powers based on water, that’s one thing, but if they throw in that he’s king of Atlantis, that’s movie suicide.

    • Aquaman deserves to be on the team as much as the other characters. He was an original member and still is. Ant Man was’nt in Avengers but will probably be in Avengers 2. Anyway, Aquaman is a great character and deserves his time to shine.

      • They say “Aquaman: Will be the King of Atlantis who has a key role in the film.”

I am assuming they are going to be taking the film into or onto the ocean for a brief period. Enter Aquaman.

        • I cannot wait to see Sam Worthington playing Aquaman… I heard he can make a great casting role playing “The King of Atlantis”.

          • I could see him as Aquaman. He has a pretty wicked beard.

          • @Dannylovesmovies

If they need Aquaman to talk with some strange hybrid American-Australian accent, have a stoic/annoyed look on his face, and talk about how he’s the best there is and he needs to stop someone, then yeah, Sam Worthington is perfect.

Come on, the guy plays the same role in every movie. I certainly don’t think he has the acting chops to play a character like Aquaman. Who knows, he could surprise me, but I would be pretty doubtful. Worthington is a bad choice IMO

            • Haha wow I thought you were actually describing how Aquaman should act at first, since…that is kind of him in the New 52.

  11. It’s a DC property. It has fail written all over it.

  12. I really think they should add in another female character, like Hawkgirl. No Aquaman, that family guy skit really stays with me when I think of him. Hope they bring back Reynolds, he’s still bankable and a good actor. Green Lantern wasn’t that bad in my opinion but the writing is what made the movie weak. I’m really looking forward to it, people said Man of Steel would be sh*t but after the trailer everyone’s feeling it. Justice League will be a highly entertaining and great film.

  13. Serenity now!!!

  14. Justice League Movie – Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (John Stewart), the Flash (Barry Allen), Black Canary, and Firestorm (Jason Rusch).

  15. There is just a lot of essentially blind anticipation right now, due to the fact that WB/DC still has to prove that they even can make a good superhero film outside of the Dark Knight trilogy. Man of Steel looks great so far, but I confess that it’s allegedly developing link with Justice League is a little concerning. I agree that King of Atlantis is also scary…

  16. I cannot wait to see Justice League of America when it comes out on the big screen from Warner Bros. ?

    Here is the casting:
Karen Cliche as Wonder Woman/Princess Diana/Diana Prince
    Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Flash/Barry Allen
Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern/Hal Jordan
    Sam Worthington as Aquaman/Arthur Curry
Vin Diesel as Martian Manhunter/J’on Jo’onz/John Jones

    Michael Chikilis as Darkseid
    Chris Isaaks as Desaad
    Mark Strong as Sinestro

    • Dude, Micjael Chikilis as Darkseid?? I love him, Shield tv series was awsome, but the guy is like 5’6″, not tall enough to be the main villain, your choices are kinda one dimensional man, gotta think outside the box.

      Jackie Chan as The Flash
      Arnold Swharchnsgfifkfgger as Martian ManHunter
      Sylvester Stallone as Superman
Christopher Walken as Green Lantern “Hello, little man”
      William Shatner as Aquaman
      Chuck Norriss as Batman
      Betty White as Wonder Woman

      and Robin Williams as Darkseid.
BAM! There you have it, best JLA movie casting ever!

      • The Expendables 3 is casted for The Justice League. Im okay with this…

      • @Bryan – LOL!

      • You are silly

      • @Bryan

Only is Arnold makes Mars puns the entire movie.

  17. Personally I think that people are missing a few things and have really closed down their imaginations.

Think about it for a minute. What is it that’s the overarching point of the Marvel movie team up and the story we have been treated to this far? What’s the point?

Isn’t it that Thanos is after something other than Earth? The Infinity Gauntlet! To me that’s Marvels story right there.

BUT what is DC’s Villain Darkseid and his minions after?? Their goal IS the conquest of Earth! That difference in the goals sets different tones for both movie series. Consider this too, while the Avengers are Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The Justice League is equally made up of not just the mighty heroes of Earth but also very much an equal number of alien heroes as well! Superman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and Hawk-Girl are all, in some sense, aliens. In fact Wonder Woman might be misinterpreted as among them as well. All aliens. So how does the governments of Earth see and treat them versus how the Avengers are treated?
Well like we’ve seen Superman treated in the ‘Man of Steel’ trailer. Very different!

Now I know that Marvel almost played the superheroes that way but they didn’t! Witness the SHIELD initiative, a government program across all the movies. In the Marvel universe they are apart of some human government plan and it would’ve been inconsistent to have played the team another way, so they cut the footage that would’ve played them up some other way, even though there is a scene in ‘The Avengers’ that shows government officials unsure of their use.

A DC spin could be that at best the governments of Earth would logically think that Earth has become not just a battleground but very much a piece of a galactic pie being eyed to be divvied up and exploited for greater goals all by outside forces. ‘M.O.S.’ could play that way and be used as an introduction into a universe where people and governments are divided on how they see the activities of these heroes. Some might see them as being some Galactic police force or military expedition that has brought its Galactic fight to our backwater planet. Think about how world politics plays today between first and third world countries!

This is just one angle of how that DC could differentiate themselves from Marvel and still have a team up movie that on the surface might seem or look like the Avengers but market very differently and sold very differently to an audience.

I’m thinking, right now anyway, that ‘Man of Steel’ will play different than what other versions of Superman have played and something audiences aren’t quite expecting…

  18. I would rather Man of Steel stay in a separate universe where only Superman exist, that way Snyder is not restricted when making a sequel. Adding more heroes to the universe drastically changes the dynamic of said universe and what kinda stories you can tell. Cinematic Universes are cool but solo universes allow for better range of story telling.

    • Yep there’s no way to know what they’ll do until they do it! so one speculation is as good as another…

  19. Well I dont agree on bringing back reynolds, Id prefer a new j. stewart or kyle reynar but…..
    F**k YES AQUAMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I love aquaman….man.

  20. I think everyone might walk out loving The Flash if he’s done right. Seriously, he is one of the coolest heroes of the Justice League

    • +1,000,000,000,000

  21. Adrian Grenier, billed as Vincent Chase, better be in the running for the part of Aquaman.

  22. I fully admit Green Lantern wasn’t great. But the internet bubble has blown it’s infamy completely out of proportion. No way was it “abysmal”. That word might fit something like “Catwoman” or “Batman & Robin”, but saying GL was that bad is way over the top.

  23. This load of s*** is up there with the Eddie Murphy as the Riddler rumor.

  24. I’m not happy about the lack of buildup(via solo movies) either, but it can work if WB approaches this movie like X-men. They had no prior build-up either(Wolverine came only after 3 X-men movies) and they were great and portrayed believably.

    • You should tell that to Rob Keyes. ;)

  25. DC would do well to forget about the horrid Ryan Reynolds “Green Lantern” and use an original take on the character, or perhaps include one of the other less well-known versions, such as John Stewart.

  26. For the people saying leave Aquaman out… are you nuts! Hes an original member and hes a badass! He HAS to be in the Justice League, id be gutted if they left him out, im hoping he has a big part in it, Followed by an epic solo film, You might as well say just leave out Wonder Women or Flash, its the same thing, anyway whatever they do it should be a million times better than that Avengers rubbish, A proper superhero team..

  27. I like the idea of Aquaman based on him being a huge member of D.C Lore, but because of practicality, I think it is best that he stays out of the first movie just to keep things simple. In my opinion it’s best to keep things simple and focus on the main core characters and not just have a superhero movie that bounces in all directions.

    • Nice plug for your registrar. ;)

  28. I don’t know why everyone is so worried about contunity with the comics. There hasen’t been A movie,TV show and only A few cartoons that followed the comics. SO everybody let’s ligten up before we scare them out of making the movie.

    • If studio execs actually listened to what the fans actually have said, their wouldn’t be “Screenrant”. Just sayin lol

  29. I wish they were moving forward with Cyborg instead of Martian Manhunter. I understand they need him to tie into Darkseid but I find Cyborg to be a much cooler character and we need more black superheros on the big screen. Just IMO
