Man of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder has long proven to be savvy in the art of building anticipation for his comic book film adaptations, through the power of social media. The filmmaker previously revealed first look images of Ben Affleck in his Batman costume alongside his Batmobile through Twitter, in addition to unveiling the first photo of Jason Momoa as Aquaman – a character who was glimpsed in Batman V Superman, but is one of the central players in the Justice League DC Extended Universe movie that Snyder is currently head-down in production on.
Snyder has now posted a pic of Affleck on the set of Justice League, dressed in what the director describes as being the “new tactical Batsuit.” The filmmaker also teased that he is on the last day of filming that will require Affleck to be wearing this particular Batman costume. You can check out the photo of Affleck in the tactical Batsuit from the Justice League set, below.
The aesthetic of Batman’s suit here is in line with “tactical” Batman costumes from the past, including the practically-designed suit worn by Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne in Chris Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy and the armor worn by the Caped Crusader in the Arkham Asylum video games. Batman’s goggles here are smaller, more narrow and also less obtrusive than those protective ones he wore during the events of the “Knightmare” sequence in Batman V Superman by comparison. Meanwhile, the armor plates of his suit lend him a slim, yet agile and dangerous, appearance.
It remains to be seen what specific circumstances in Justice League motivate Batman to ditch his traditional Batsuit in favor of this tactical gear. In general though, he’s going to be relying on the best in Bat-tech during this particular DCEU film – including, using the Flying Fox, a portable headquarters for the Justice League itself that can be glimpsed in the Deathstroke test footage that Affleck released online.
Speaking of Deathstroke (a villain now confirmed to be played by Joe Manganiello in the DCEU), one wonders if Batman will wear this tactical armor again post-Justice League, when he faces off with Slade Wilson in Affleck’s solo Batman movie. It’s likely that more than one piece of Bat-equipment that debuts in Justice League will be glimpsed again, in some form, in that Affleck-directed DCEU film too.
Suicide Squad is now playing in theaters. Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020.
