The Giganotosaurus is poised to play a big role in next year's Jurassic World: Dominion. Picking up four years after the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the third and final film in the beloved dinosaur franchise will enter uncharted territory where the prehistoric creatures are running wild outside of the titular theme park. Jurassic World: Dominion will see characters from the previous two films, as well as those from Jurassic Park like Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern, return to deal with this new crisis.

Since Jurassic World: Dominion was delayed from this year to 2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic, many details about the film are still being kept under wraps. However, the project's upcoming IMAX preview, which will screen alongside F9 later this month, has brought a slew of new teases online. For example, Jurassic World 3 will follow two sets of characters in parallel stories, and it will feature numerous new dinosaur species. One of these newcomers, a feathered dinosaur known as an Oviraptor, was just revealed in a new Jurassic World: Dominion image.

Another one of the new species featured in the movie is poised to play a big role: The Giganotosaurus. Screen Rant interviewed Jurassic World: Dominion director Colin Trevorrow about the film's IMAX preview and scored some exciting tidbits about the film. The preview features seven new dinosaur species, and we asked Trevorrow if there are any more in the film, and how he decided on which ones to use. He had this to say:

The fact that I get to decide what new species to use in these movies still shocks me that I have that responsibility. It’s the best part of my job that I get to do that. There are seven [in the preview]. Some of the ones that are introduced in this prologue, you do see in Dominion. And there are some major new ones that are only in Dominion. The Giganotosaurus - as you can imagine, I wouldn’t do the audience like that by just showing the Giganotosaurus taking out the T-Rex and never seeing it again. So that’s going to be a major player going forward. It’s a pretty badass dinosaur, that thing.

Colin Trevorrow and Jurassic World Dominion

The Jurassic World: Dominion IMAX trailer sees the Giganotosaurus go up against a T-Rex in the Cretaceous period. In a show of the Giganotosaurus' might, it kills the T-Rex, cementing itself as a major predator. As Trevorrow confirmed, the Giganotosaurus will go on to appear throughout Jurassic World: Dominion, and it just might be one of the biggest baddies the humans have to face. Seeing a Giganotosaurus walking around in a human city is a startling prospect; hopefully the movie will actually feature a moment like that.

Trevorrow also said separately that Jurassic World: Dominion won't have any hybrid dinosaurs, so the only creatures audiences see will be ones that truly lived thousands of years ago. It sounds like in addition to featuring some familiar dinos like the T-Rex, Trevorrow worked to incorporate others fans might not be very knowledgeable about. This should make Jurassic World: Dominion an even more intriguing adventure than it already is, and it'll be so exciting to see these new dinosaurs roaming around.
