Coming in 2022, Jurassic World: Dominion will pick up four years after Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, rounding off the second Jurassic trilogy centered on the fallout from the titular theme park. Colin Trevorrow (director of Jurassic World) will be back calling the shots, putting Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt once again through their paces.

Originally, Jurassic World: Dominion was all set to be released in theaters on June 11, 2021. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced all productions to shut down over safety and health concerns, and that along with long-term theater closures led to a year-long delay. The original release date was given way back in February of 2018, and principal photography didn't begin on Jurassic World: Dominion until late February of 2020. The official Jurassic World 3 release date is now June 10, 2022.

If Steven Spielberg's reaction to Jurassic World 3 is any indication, fans of the franchise should be particularly excited by what is to come with the third installment. Unlike many other popular reboot franchises, the Jurassic Park series hasn't faced a lot of controversy regarding its actors or filmmakers, with its only flaw being the delays (obviously, these circumstances were unavoidable). With all that in mind, here's everything to know about Jurassic World: Dominion's release date, cast, story details, and more.

Jurassic World's Main Stars Will Return

Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt in Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom

Both Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are signed on to return for Jurassic World: Dominion. They've been the core of the series since the 2015 original, so it only makes sense for them to round out the franchise. In addition, Isabella Sermon will return as Maisie Lockwood, along with Justice Smith as Franklin Webb, and Daniella Pineda, as Dr. Zia Rodriguez. Neither Smith nor Pineda was massively expanded upon in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, but both were left alive, so hopefully, the sequel will explore their characters further. Dr. Wu (B.D. Wong) will also return; a morally gray character, he's likely to be wanting to continue his work with cloning. Omar Sy and Jake Johnson will be back as well, alongside Mamoudou Athie, Scott Haze, Dichen Lachman, Campbell Scott, and DeWanda Wise.

Jurassic Park's Main Stars Will Also Return

Alan Grant Ian Malcom and Ellie Sattler in Jurassic Park

In addition to Owen, Claire, and the other returning Jurassic World cast members, Jurassic Park's original trio of leads Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Dr. Ellie Satler (Laura Dern), and Dr. Ian Malcolm are also set to reunite onscreen for the first time since 1993. Director Colin Trevorrow has confirmed these won't just be cameos either, as the original Jurassic Park trio Neill, Dern, and Goldblum will be in the whole movie, and together at that. They will also star in their own parallel story to Owen and Claire's that eventually intersects with them.

What The Jurassic World 3 Story Is About

While the main plot of Jurassic World: Dominion has been largely kept under wraps, audiences already know enough about the returning cast of characters and how the previous film set them up to return in the latest installment. Jurassic World 3 will likely involve Claire and Owen teaming up with (or possibly working against) Alan, Ellie, and Ian in dealing with the dinosaurs now roaming outside of the original parks.

Jurassic World 3 Is Officially Done

Production for the Jurassic World movie has finally been completed. After production was shut down fairly early in the process, audiences were concerned about the heavy delay this could cause on the release date. However, the director Colin Trevorrow confirmed that Jurassic World 3 is officially done, meaning that audiences can expect more promotional material as the release date approaches.

Jurassic World 3 Release Date (Including Streaming)

Jurassic World 3 Fallen Kingdom

Originally scheduled for a release date of June 11, 2021, the film was delayed due to the pandemic. Luckily, the film was mostly completed at the time of Universal Pictures' date change, putting the film's new release a year after its initial date. Since its announced completion, Jurassic World: Dominion is officially scheduled to hit theaters on June 10, 2022. Post-production has already been completed and while theaters are still having some capacity limits fans are still at least able to see it on the big screen. For those who can't make it to the theater, the movie is set to release on Amazon Prime some time after its theatrical run, as a part of a new deal between Universal Pictures and the streaming service.

When The Jurassic World 3 Trailer Will Likely Drop

With the movie release not too far off in the distance, many are wondering: when will Jurassic World: Dominion's trailer release? It's odd that the massive studio would wait this long to premiere the trailer, considering they generally like to take as long as possible garnering audience anticipation. As well, the movie has had so many release setbacks that fans are starting to get weary about the wait. The most viable choice for when the Jurassic World 3 trailer will drop is during the Superbowl, or Sunday, February 13, 2022. Superbowl commercials are some of the most coveted spots in the industry. As well, Universal chose to release Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's second trailer during the 2018 Superbowl. Regardless, the film industry has taken on shorter marketing campaigns due to the unstable market created by the pandemic. So, ultimately, there are no real guarantees.

Jurassic World 3 Opens 65 Million Years Ago

Jurassic World 3 Dominion Preview Teaser

In a surprising first for the Jurassic Park/World franchise, in the opening of Jurassic World: Dominion the director Colin Trevorrow starts during the Cretaceous period, showing the origin story of Jurassic Park's famous T-Rex in the process. Trevorrow made the decision to do this as a way to offer something new to fans, and also shine a spotlight on a period sure to fascinate dinosaur lovers. A five-minute prologue can be seen on YouTube, which shows the dinosaurs living in their natural habitat, and then tearing their way through a movie theater. The prologue came out on November 23, 2021. While technically not a trailer, it's at least something to give fans a peek into the latest realistic CGI technology that the new franchise boasts.

Jurassic World 3 Introduces 7 New Dinosaur Species

Jurassic World Dominion

In another first for Jurassic Park/World fans, Jurassic World: Dominion will feature the first appearances in the franchise by seven new species. A brand new Atrociraptor image from Jurassic World 3 shows that the movies will forever stay true to their love of the destructive Raptor species. The other new dinosaur species being introduced in Jurassic World 3 are the Giganotosaurus, Dreadnoughtus, Quetzalcoatlus, Oviraptor, Nasutoceratops, Iguanodon, and Morus Intrepidus. Some of the dinosaurs seen will also have feathers, which is another first. The Gigantosaurus will likely get the biggest spotlight, fighting the T-Tex in the prologue and also appearing later in the present.

Jurassic World 3 Needs Some New Villains

A lot of the characters from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom were eaten or otherwise killed by the dinosaurs, so there's bound to be some new villainous roles who are looking to profit off of the dinosaurs. Wong has suggested that Jurassic Park's Dr. Henry Wu isn't necessarily a villain, but that doesn't mean that his actions won't lead to more bad things happening. There are many people in the franchise with some questionable morals though, and it'll be interesting to see which of them rises to become the antagonist for Jurassic World: Dominion.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Sets Up Jurassic World 3

Jurassic World 2 Fallen Kingdom Post Credits Scene

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom sees Claire and Owen helping to evacuate the dinosaurs from Isla Nublar. Believing they're in safe hands, they assist in getting the creatures back to the Lockwood Estate, only to realize they're being sold as war machines for maximum profit. This includes a prototype of the new hybrid dinosaur, Fallen Kingdom's deadly Indoraptor. Early on in the movie, Dr. Malcolm warns that, unless we're careful, the dinosaurs that were here before us will be here long after us, too. This is a moral quandary that presents itself several times during Fallen Kingdom; should the dinosaurs be saved from certain death, or should nature be allowed to take its course? Ultimately, the decision rests with a 10-year-old girl, who, angry at realizing she's a clone herself, lets the dinosaurs go free. At the end of the movie, creatures including Raptors, Triceratops, and T-Rex, are wandering freely around America, setting the stage for Jurassic World: Dominion.

There Will Be No More Hybrid Dinosaurs

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's Indoraptor

What's defined the Jurassic World franchise, aside from the refined special effects, has been its use of hybrid dinosaurs. Jurassic World introduced the Indominus Rex, while Fallen Kingdom shrunk the design for the Indoraptor. Jurassic World 3 won't include hybrid dinosaurs, as revealed by director Colin Trevorrow. While this plot thread has allowed for creatures that boast supernatural attacks, it's also distracted from the more classic dinosaurs Jurassic Park fans fell in love with/were terrified of. As a result, they won't be back. Colin Trevorrow has said that Jurassic World 3 will take a more "back to basics" approach, with no more hybrid dinosaurs set to appear.

Colin Trevorrow Returns To Direct Jurassic World 3

Colin Trevorrow helmed Jurassic World, but directing duties fell to J.A. Bayona for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Trevorrow still had a lot of involvement, though, co-writing the script and serving as an executive producer. While some weren't happy with his creative choices for Jurassic World, others felt he more than delivered on the movie, and certainly, the box office figures suggest that to be the case. It has long been confirmed that Trevorrow will return as director for Jurassic World 3 and, really, he seems to be the right person to bring the trilogy to its conclusion. He will also co-write the script with Emily Carmichael, with help on the story from Derek Connelly.

Jurassic World 3 Is A Science Thriller

Henry Wu stands in the lab in Jurassic World

Trevorrow seems to be taking a different approach to Jurassic World 3, calling the movie a "science thriller." For context, he called Jurassic World an action-adventure, and Fallen Kingdom a horror-suspense film. Both of those descriptions are pretty accurate, so it's safe to assume he's spot on with his description of Jurassic Word 3 as well. As already mentioned, Trevorrow has also confirmed that there will be no hybrid dinosaurs in Jurassic World: Dominion following the demise of the Indominus Rex and the Indoraptor. This will give Jurassic World 3 the chance to focus on the original dinosaurs, now roaming across North America, and the course of nature versus the interference of humans.

Jurassic World 3 Is Not The End Of The Trilogy

Jurassic World 3 Dominion practical dinosaur models

Jurassic World 3 wraps up the franchise, according to director Colin Trevorrow. The end of Fallen Kingdom saw the dinosaurs escape and they'll be on the mainland in Dominion. However, while the film is the third in a trilogy, it will mark the "start of a new era," according to producer Frank Marshall. This means that the stories of Pratt and Howard's characters will be put to rest as the franchise enters a whole new phase, one that could explore the effects of humans living alongside dinosaurs. It'll be interesting to see whether Dr. Malcolm's warning from Fallen Kingdom still resonates in the third film.

Plot points might cover whether the dinosaurs survive long afterward, if humans will have to wipe them out in order to continue living, how the world fares with dinosaurs roaming the wild, and the difficulty of catching a T-Rex in the wild. Audiences have to determine whether or not this new era will be a mistake for Jurassic World 3. Dr. Malcolm says "Life cannot be contained. Life breaks free. Life finds a way." That being said, whether Dr. Malcom's words apply to humans, dinosaurs, or both, viewers will find out by the end of Jurassic World: Dominion.
