Jeff Goldblum is set to make his triumphant return as Ian Malcolm in Jurassic World 2. Goldblum is one of the original stars from the first trilogy, although he only appeared in Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Ever since Universal announced that they were "rebooting" the franchise with a long awaited sequel, fans of the classic movies have been left wondering if any of the original cast members would return.

Jurassic World saw Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard take on the leading roles, but with Jurassic World now overrun by dinosaurs as well, the sequel will feature a largely different cast - though Pratt and Howard will return. While it is unknown how or why, it has been revealed that Jurassic World 2 will also bring Malcolm back into the fold.

THR is reporting that Jeff Goldblum has joined the cast of Jurassic World 2. They do not reveal the circumstances around his return, but there must be a good reason to bring the mathematician back. Whatever the case may be, one of Malcolm's most memorable lines in Jurassic Park rings true: Life finds a way. Producer Frank Marshall has also confirmed Malcolm's return in an interview with Slashfilm.

I’m excited to have him back. The world has changed a lot since Ian Malcolm went to Jurassic Park and we need his point of view now more than ever. He told us about chaos theory, he was right.

Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park

The last time audiences got to see Malcolm in action was 20 years ago following the rampage in San Diego. He went on to retire from his dinosaur days and publish books on his experience. As a leading expert in Chaos Theory, his interest may have been piqued with the events that transpired at the Jurassic World resort. If his return is not tied to these events, then it may not be until official plot details are released that fans discover what has brought Malcolm back.

Regardless of how he returns, this offers Jurassic World 2 the chance to truly bridge the gap between the original trilogy and the new one they are working on. This mix of nostalgia worked in the favor of Star Wars: The Force Awakens as it too saw the newer stars share screen time with those that came before. It will surely be something special for fans both old and new to see Malcolm (hopefully) interact with Owen and Claire.

Now the question becomes how big of a role Goldblum will have in his return. Filming on Jurassic World 2 has been underway for a few months, so his addition is later than the rest of the cast. The timing could indicate a small role for him, as a big role would have been something in the works during the script writing phase. That said, maybe he was always planned to have a larger role, but they were simply holding off on announcing it until later on. With Godlblum's return now complete, it could also open the door for fellow Jurassic Park alums Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Julianne Moore, and more to return in the future.
