Though Jurassic Park 4 was initially going to be released next summer, the project was put on hold back in May (for rewrites, etc.) and delayed until 2015. In the time since, we haven't gotten much in the way of official news about the film, though there have been rumors about the plot and new dinosaurs, not to mention interviews with the director, Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed).

Today, we've got perhaps the biggest news yet about the fourth film in the dino-thriller franchise: Jurassic Park 4 will officially be titled Jurassic World, and it has a release date of June 12th, 2015.

The news comes courtesy of Coming Soon, which is also reporting that the movie will be shot in 3D - though that news is a bit older.

So what can we gleam from a name like Jurassic World? While the title of the film isn't necessarily a concrete indicator of its plot, it does seem to confirm the rumor that the plot will have something to do with a now fully functional dinosaur theme park, as per John Hammond's original vision. (Disney World + Jurassic Park = Jurassic World?) For those who don't know, here's a portion of that rumor (which was later confirmed by Paramount to be from an "older draft" of the script):

" 'Jurassic Park 4,' set in present day Isla Nublar, is now an actual theme park, as originally intended by John Hammond in the first film. It garners 10 million visitors per year and is completely safe – until it’s not. The park itself is described as very Sea World-esque and includes an area called the Isla Nublar Lagoon. That means underwater dino’s for the first time. No indication of what kind, but there’s concept art showing one of the aquatic dino’s, as part of a show, jumping out of the lagoon and eating a strung up great white shark like it was a fish for a dolphin at sea world."

I have to say, as someone who's generally pretty skeptical of sequels this late in the game, a Jurassic Park movie that shows us the dinosaur theme park in its prime - just before the mayhem starts, of course - sounds pretty enticing. It's also a huge step forward from the last film, which was basically a watered down version of the original.

Jurassic Park 4 to get Summer 2015 release date?

As for the release date, Jurassic World will hit theaters a week before the Assassin's Creed adaptation and a month after Avengers: Age of Ultron. Seeing as 2015 will be the biggest movie summer that the world has ever seen - with movies like Batman vs. Superman, Star Wars 7, Terminator 5, Mission Impossible 5, Warcraft, Finding Dory, Ant-Man, Independence Day 2, the Fantastic Four reboot, and more being released - it'll be interesting to see where all the films without release dates set up shop.

The conventional wisdom seems to be that 2015 will be box office heaven, but is it possible that moviegoers will be so burnt out on blockbusters that they only turn out for the really big ones? We'll have to wait a couple years to find out.

What do you think about the new title, Screen Ranters? Are you excited to see what Colin Trevorrow can do with the Jurassic Park universe? Drop us a line in the comments.
