Kathleen Kennedy Updates ‘Jurassic Park 4′ & ‘Tintin’ Sequel

Published 2 years ago by , Updated August 2nd, 2013 at 8:53 am,

It’s a busy time for both Steven Spielberg and his longtime production collaborator, Kathleen Kennedy. The two have been working together ever since Raiders of the Lost Ark back in 1981 (where the latter served as an “associate” to Spielberg) and will continue to do so in the future – including on next year’s Lincoln, the still-theoretical Jurassic Park 4, and the already-in-development sequel to Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin adaptation.

Kennedy and Spielberg were recently at a New York press junket for their other 2011 release, War Horse. The former has revealed some interesting tidbits of information, with regards to both a fourth Jurassic Park flick and the next 3D mo-cap Tintin movie.

Previous reports revealed that Spielberg and screenwriter Mark Protosevich are actively concocting a story for Jurassic Park 4; however, according to Kennedy, no actual script writing has been done just yet. That statement contradicts previous comments by Spielberg, who said that Protosevich had begun working on the screenplay for a fourth Jurassic Park and that the film has “a good story” already in place.

On that note – here is what Kennedy had to offer Collider, with regards to the likelihood of Jurassic Park 4 actually being made:

“A great script is what it’s gonna take to get a fourth ‘Jurassic Park’. We have a very high bar for ourselves because we’re just like the audience, we don’t wanna make the movie if there’s not a reason to make the movie. So we’ve kinda created the dilemma ourselves because it was never intended to be a franchise, so there’s an argument to be made ‘Why are you doing a fourth ‘Jurassic Park’?’ So we’ve gotta find a good reason for why we’re doing a fourth ‘Jurassic Park’ and we’re in the midst of working on that right now.”

Many moviegoers would probably agree that the last two installments in the franchise (The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III) didn’t exactly play out as uncontrived continuations of the plot in the original Jurassic Park – though, judging by the box office returns, that didn’t prevent the masses from watching them, anyway.

Still, even if Protosevich has in fact begun writing Jurassic Park 4, that doesn’t guarantee his script draft will even see the light of day. Best to just wait and see, on this one…

The Adventures of Tintin

Captain Haddock Snowy and Tintin 570x320 Kathleen Kennedy Updates Jurassic Park 4 & Tintin Sequel

Spielberg’s 3D motion-capture Adventures of Tintin movie has already grossed over $220 million in theaters outside the U.S.; so, assuming that the flick doesn’t completely bomb when it hits the States, it’s safe to say another Tintin movie is in the cards. The preliminary plan for that sequel remains the same: Spielberg will produce and Jackson will direct, switching their roles from the original.

Here is the tentative status/production timeline for the next Tintin movie (according to Kennedy):

“We’re working on a [new 'Tintin' movie] script right now, we’ll see a script probably February or March [of 2012]. If we can do some camera capture [in Summer 2012], which I think we could do, then we would be on track to have the movie either Christmas 2014 or Summer 2015, and so that’s what we’re looking at right now.”

Jackson is expected to wrap up principal photography on The Hobbit by the first half of Summer 2012; hence, the plan is for him to take a “break” and work on the performance-capture shoot for the new Tintin movie, before post-production on The Hobbit gets fully underway.

Considering that Spielberg completed “camera capture” on Adventures of Tintin in about 32 days, it is certainly feasible for Jackson to do likewise and fit the film into his currently-busy schedule.

The Adventures of Tintin opens in theaters around the U.S. on December 21st, 2011.

  1. Bring on Jurassic park 4. I enjoyed the sequels though I’m aware that they’re flawed. Going to see Jurassic Park, was my first cinema experience and it just blew me away as a kid so I think I’ve got a soft spot for them!!

  2. I WANT ‘Jurassic Park 4′… I don’t care if it’s another stupid sequel like 3. I loved ‘The Lost World’ actually. One of the most memorable scenes is in it. In my opinion, the scene where they are being chased by the velociraptors in the “tall grass” was something that I loved.

    • The Lost World isn’t as bad as people say. My issue is that Michael Crichton’s novel of the same title was so much better. If they just would have called it Jurassic Park 2, it wouldn’t have upset me as much as it did. As for the third one, it was pretty bad. I would only like a fourth one if they can get a worthwhile script and special effects equal to or better than the first film.

  3. I hope they bring the focus back to the science aspect of it. That’s what drew the audience into the first one. It felt like it really could happen, if someone would dare be as crazy as John Hammond. Well, that and insanely realistic looking dinosaurs – and the dinosaurs felt like real animals, not like movie monsters.

  4. I know I’ve been wanting a sequel to JP since that bird thing was chasing the cavemen in 10,000 B. C.

I agree about the third one being really bad. The best part about it was the pterodactyls. And the cgi now will be so amazing! As long as they still use animatronics for the close ups of the dinosaurs.

I’ve always wanted to know who the mysterious organization that wanted Donald to steal the embryos was. Maybe they sent a team to the islan after the chopper came back with everyone from the first film. I don’t know something like that, to keep it fresh but still tied into the rest of the films.

  5. How I would like to see JP4:
A family goes missing on their yacht .. All that is left is a wreckage caused by something much bigger than a shark.
Several instances of pterodactyl attacks have been recorded.
The original islands are over populated with Dinos, disease is feared by the civilized world. Governments fear the public outcry if they destroy the dinosaurs.
The government steps in secretly. While the other stories were played out, the US government was secretely working on their own clones. The dinosaurs that were deemed too “scary and cannibalistic” for public knowledge (enter del toro syle of imagination).
Let the Dinos take care of themselves . . .that is the decision.
A few human stories can be intertwined, but imagine an all out dino war. One were the audiences cheer for the T-rex.

    • One *where* the audiences cheer for the T-rex.

  6. Omg jp4 i have been waiting for years for this number 1 and 2 were good number 3 was good but not great i hated the ending. But bring back original characters this movie i gaurentee would make a box office hit i would def see it. I loved jurassic park ever since i was a young kid and i still love it now i watch it if its on or i will stick it in the blue ray player and blast it so loud. I love the music in the movies as well..

  7. i always thought the ending of the third one should of been the t-rex killing the spinosaurus, because the t-rex was always the main dinosaur and i think it basically killed the movie when they changed that, instead of killing the t-rex early he should of been injured or presumed dead, and then at the end come back and destroy that spinosaurus

  8. Ya i hated the spineosauraus it made the movie always seem fake the t rex was always the best dino in the movie besides velociraptor. But bring back the rex and leave out the spine i hated that thing.. Bring back elle and dr grant lol and the kids lol
