jurassic park 4 concept art ILM Says Recent Jurassic Park 4 Concept Art Is Not Official

Those who have been following progress (or lack thereof) on Jurassic Park 4 over the past decade may recall a time when mind-baffling rumors were circulating that the fourth installment was going to feature genetically-altered dinosaurs trained to use weapons. Screen Rant‘s own Rob Keyes jokingly (or was he?) requested a Dino-Riders movie while writing about the project last year; however, that’s not all that far off from the shape JP4 was taking some eight years ago.

William Monahan (The Departed) and John Sayles (Lone Star) penned that version of the script, with Carlos Huante (Prometheus) serving as the conceptual artist. We’ve contacted ILM and been informed that the JP4 conceptual artwork which leaked online earlier this week is not from the official production. Nonetheless, these images do offer some interesting food-for-thought on what could’ve been the next step in evolution (or something like that) for the Jurassic Park franchise.

Ain’t It Cool News got ahold of Monahan and Sayles’ JP4 script draft – which was tentatively titled Dinosaurs with Guns – back in 2007 (read their review here). The story revolved around a new bioengineering company breeding hybrids that combine dinosaur, human, and dog DNA, to produce a form of ‘biological weaponry’ that could be trained for combat. At first, it sounds like someone wrote a script based on the “Tyrannosaurs in F-14s!” panel from Calvin and Hobbes. However, in action, the script is described as more intelligent (which makes sense, given the writers involved), like a modern blockbuster treatment of H.G. Wells’ The Island of Dr. Moreau.

We get that same Wellian sci-fi vibe from the unofficial concept design artwork, suggesting the ‘lab experiments’ in the Dinosaurs with Guns version of JP4 might have looked something like this:

A number of sites reported that the artwork could have been official pre-production concept artwork – put together by the visual effects team at ILM (because the artwork was stamped with Industrial Light and Magic watermarks). However, before sharing the artwork, we wanted to dig a little deeper – so we followed-up with ILM.

According to the ILM representative who responded to our inquiry:

Not sure where this stuff came from but it’s not from a production we’ve worked on. Looks like someone’s personal work – ILM doesn’t put © lines on our work like in those images – we don’t own the work – the clients do.

As a result, while the images could still be legitimate pre-production concept art – the designs never went nearly as far into the pipeline as many people might have been speculating.

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are working on the current JP4 script draft (from a story developed by Steven Spielberg and Mark Protosevich), but they are not expected to lift any elements directly from Monahan and Sayles’ screenplay. The duo could very well use further genetic experimentation with dinosaurs as a plot point in their draft, but in a more scientific (re: realistic) manner that recalls their approach on Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Jurassic Park III introduced the concept of ‘talking dinosaurs’, but this abandoned version of JP4 would’ve taken the sci-fi aspects in a much more bizarre direction. It could have been a brilliant re-invention of the franchise, but it might’ve as easily destroyed what little credibility this series has left (add it to the “Abandoned Sci-Fi Vision” File, with Jon Spaihts’ original script for Prometheus).

Jurassic Park 4, in its current state, is being planned for release in 2014.

  1. The second to the last one looked cool, but not in a Jurassic Park movie.

    • My thoughts exactly. That stuff could be a cool concept for an original movie but it should stay clear of the Jurassic Park franchise.

      • Maybe something like The island with Dr. Monroe? Instead of cow people, tiger people and other hybrids, T-Rex people?

        • That is “Reptar” from my next live action movie “RUGRATS: THE REVENGE OF ANGELICA”

  2. -_____-

  3. Thank god this didn’t happen.

  4. Sooooooooo…..dino human gene splicing? /facepalm

That is definitely a new twist but not for THIS franchise.

  5. Spinosaurus in ‘Jurassic Park III’ was still a “dinosaur”. But dino-human-canine hybrids?! That’s like calling ‘Sharktopus’ a sequel to ‘Jaws’! Or ‘Promethus’ a (direct) prequel to ‘Alien’!! What’s next? Bat-Vampire-Werewolf hybrids from ‘Underworld’?!

May be the unofficial concept art was for “Rise Of The Planet Of The Jurassic Dinosaurs”. ;-)

    • Spinosaurus was an actual dinosaur, yes, it was not created for the movie.

      • Thanks! I didn’t know that. :-)

  6. I’m so glad they didn’t go there. This movie was made already. They called it Super Mario Bros.

    • I just LOL’d so hard! very true tho… these concept pieces do reminisce the dinos in mario bros!

    • LOL…my thought also when I saw the pics.

    • Super Jurassic Lizard Spider-Mario

  7. what a bulls..t, some look cool, but it has nothing in common with the jur.p.franchise. or they jump on the kaiju train, but that would be laughable. it´s hard for j.p.4 to be a hit if they haven´t got an ultra-cool story. because of the upcoming giant monster movies that we will see in near future, it´s all on -pacific rim-, if it will be good then it will revolution the genre, after that we get as i hope a true -godzilla- movie. i have high hopes in those two movies. so, if they´ll flop then it will be hard for -j.p-,but even if they will be box-office hits it will be hard for -j.p- to get the audience back. we will see.

  8. hmmmmm, I wonder what jurassic 4 is gonna be. People complained because 3 was too straightforward. Maybe the dinos become super savage or evolve in some way.

  9. Geez when will Hollywood get it.

    Dinosaurs + Guns = Fail

Dinosaurs + Frikken Laser beams = Awesome

    Really it’s not that hard.

  10. is this a joke? this looks like land of the lost! what kinda crap is this? It amazes me the s*** people get paid to think up.

    • Be careful, someone might be inspired to create a fifty foot Chaka!

  11. I like the concept idea of genetic crossbreeding for the purpose of creating intelligent hybrid beasts. (Island of Dr. Moreau style.) This is an interesting directional shift from rehashing the dinosaur plot again and again and again ( 3 times being a new trilogy)

  12. I would actually love to see this movie made by the right director, James Gunn maybe

  13. They look like rejects from The Island of Dr. Moreau

  14. Isn’t that The Lizard from Amazing Spiderman?

  15. I might be okay with this in a few movies. I think they should plant the seeds for this in JP4. Maybe show some of the dinosaurs like the Chaos Effect toy line from way back when (velociraptors with wings FTW)just to show some of the crazy **** InGen was messing around with. Then in JP5 we can go full on Human-dinosaur hybrid. I never thought about it being like Island of Dr. Moreau. That could be interesting. Just don’t give them guns, because there is no way that won’t be stupid.

  16. Yeah i would get into a dark film like that, but not if it was connected to Jp.Still looking forward to the next Jp film tho.

  17. Thank the Lord in Heaven that this didn’t pull through. lol

The concept would be cool for an original film or a really sick video game, but if they did this with Jurassic Park, I really can’t say how I would react. I would probably either go postal, or crawl into a dark corner and sob softly.

JP is one of my all time favorite movies. JP: TLW was okay, and the third was terrible. I want them to do justice to the books. There was plenty of stuff that they left out of the JP and JP:TLW books that they could create multiple new movies. Get on it Hollywood.

    • Yes! the books really do need its justice. in my opinion they messed up a lot in the movies and left a ton out of it. The first one is my favorite book of all time

  18. Do not worry, it is Reptar from my next live action movie “RUGRATS:THE REVENGE OF ANGELICA”, so do not panic, I, Michael Bay is here…

  19. I get it Screen Rant: You didn’t like Prometheus. MOVE ON ALREADY. I thought it was awesome, and am sick of your disdain creeping in to completely unrelated articles.

    • well I hated prometheus and every time that screenrant references it’s faults, it’s like someone patting me on the back and whispering in my ear “your right, you’re always right, don’t stop hating prometheus…”

  20. I love the JP franchise, but this would have been terrible. I am SO SO SOOOO glad that this didn’t happen!!

  21. Not gonna lie, I would probably see this movie, but not if it had the “Jurassic Park” name attached. This looks more like something that would air on SyFy channel right around the release of JP4. I really hope they can keep to the basic source material layout and keep it realistic. It still bothers me that The Lost Word film is NOTHING like the book.

  22. They look like creatures from the game Dead Space….interesting if they made a film about that instead.

  23. I would love to see discoveries or theories made public in the last 20 years….like how we believe (and someone stated above) Dinosaurs having wings. This could work well for the ones on Isla nubar maybe started growing wings and migrating…which was covered in Michael Crichtons Lost world…if I remember right.

I would also like this to maybe have some scientific element like the first one did. Id definetly bring in Jack Horner again as a Dino advisor. I believe this is why Steven Spielbergs Jurassic Park worked so well.

  24. Think I just threw up in my mouth on this one!

  25. The people who drew or designed those pieces of ar-… S#%t… must be killed. I will not have my favorite film franchise of all time be influenced by those horrible people.

  26. Rename to “Jurassic War,” and we’re on. I so love these creature concepts!!~!

  27. I’m half expecting it to end up being a musical by the time it reaches the screen…

  28. Great job debunking this Sandy. Some of the designs are cool, like raptor man, but T-Rex man looks ridiculous.

    • Hey, now at least the tyrannosaurs can scratch their own heads with the longer arms :P

      • Get Ray Harryhausen on the case he’ll definitely deliver the goods.

  29. Looks like s***** Resident Evil meets s***** Jurassic Park. But somehow will make 100 million and spawn 6 sequels.

    • Thank god someone agrees my first car was a jeep TJ i got my older brother to help me paint it to look like one of the jeeps from the movie. it was the first movie i can remember watching as a kid. iknow DNA is diffcult to understand and we cant clone people yet but cold blooded and warm blooded things can not mix thats like saying oil and water can both be used for drinking and in our cars common hollywood make it at least half ass real would tho watch ahybrid movie of the 2 with out the name Jurassic Park on it and no lazers they just never look right just make it tooth and nail the way nature intended it way more interesting
