6 Movies We’re Looking Forward To: July 2012

After six months of waiting, July - arguably the biggest month for blockbuster movies in 2012 - has finally arrived. This month, one comic book saga will get a fresh start with The Amazing Spider-Man and one critically-acclaimed comic book trilogy will reach its dramatic end with The Dark Knight Rises. Add to those films a new Oliver Stone thriller, a creepy drama starring Sigourney Weaver and a fresh comedy with Ben Stiller and this could be a huge month at the box office. Of course, the month's biggest winners will likely be Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises. And with their release dates quickly approaching, major questions still surround them. Will Andrew Garfield serve as a solid substitute to Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker? Can The Dark Knight Rises live up to its predecessors in the series? Will these movies redefine the comic book genre and live up to the standard The Dark Knight set in 2008? We'll find out the answers soon enough. It's only been half a decade since the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy ended, so it seems a bit early to restart the onscreen saga. But if someone can serve as the new face of Spider-Man, it's Andrew Garfield. Not only is Garfield a bona fide fan of the comics- see Comic-Con 2011- but he's also a young talented actor who seems poised for super-stardom. Although the buzz about The Amazing Spider-Man has been eclipsed by the momentum of The Avengers and anticipation for The Dark Knight Rises, there are still many reasons to be excited for it. With Garfield co-starring with Emma Stone, this could be the beginning of a new beloved franchise that lasts for years to come. Taylor Kitsch has had a rough year at the movies in 2012. His two biggest projects (John Carter and Battleship) faltered at the box office and the Friday Night Lights actor is still trying to establish himself as a successful movie star. That could change with his supporting role in the new Oliver Stone drama, Savages. The drug drama finds Kitsch and Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass in Kick-Ass) working to save their kidnapped girlfriend - whom they both share in a three-way open relationship. With an all-star cast and a strong trailer, this could serve as strong alternate viewing for those not interested in the Spider-Man reboot . Psychics take center stage in the new supernatural drama Red Lights. The film focuses on a group of investigators who study paranormal activity. Their studies lead them to one renowned psychic, whose uncanny abilities and stardom raise serious questions. The story might sound simple, but the cast is first-rate. Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy star as two of the suspicious investigators, while two-time Oscar winner Robert De Niro plays the man who may or may not have the whole world fooled. Writer/director Rodrigo Cortes found success with 2010's drama Buried and this movie could prove his staying power as a director. If he pulls it off... Oh yes. This is the movie I've been looking forward to all year. Before The Avengers even came out, I published a piece about why I was more excited for The Dark Knight Rises than The Avengers and my excitement has only grown since. But now, the movie is almost here. Christopher Nolan concludes his Batman trilogy with this highly-anticipated blockbuster that finds Batman facing off against the psychotic Bane (Tom Hardy). Nolan has already proclaimed that this is his last Batman film and it could truly be a game-changer in the field of comic book movies. The Dark Knight redefined what the genre could accomplish, so expectations are running high for this final chapter that reunites star Christian Bale with Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman. Although it hasn't been released yet, The Watch has already proven to be controversial. Its original title - Neighborhood Watch - was changed in the aftermath of the Trayvon Martin shooting. Now with its new title, the movie marketers can finally focus on the comedy's true agenda: to make people laugh. The film itself focuses on a group of neighbors who are investigateing a possible alien invasion. Director Akiva Schaffer has some experience with comedy, considering that he directed several episodes of Saturday Night Live and the 2007 comedy, Hot Rod. But the real comedic veterans are in the cast as the movie stars Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill and Vince Vaughn. In a month full of serious movies, The Watch could prove to be the perfect reprieve for viewers looking for a good time at the theater. And Jonah Hill - who just struck comedic gold with the surprise hit 21 Jump Street - could prove his staying power as a comic actor as well. Matthew McConaughey in Killer Joe

Director William Friedkin has brought us several cinematic classic including The Exorcist and The French Connection. In Killer Joe, he has another intriguing story on his hands. Matthew McConaughey stars as the title character, a contract killer whose latest job finds him working to kill Emile Hirsch's mom. Although McConaughey is known by many for his romantic comedies, he seems to be changing that perception quite quickly. With a stellar turn in Bernie and a strong performance in Magic Mike, he's quickly established himself in a series of different genres. With a new Batman movie and a new Spider-Man movie coming out in July, this month could be one to remember for years to come. But there are a few other movies that could be worth seeing. Here again is our list of the six movies that we are most looking forward to in the month...

  I’m planning on eventually seeing everything on the list. The only one I’m not running to the movies for is ‘The Savages’. Just doesn’t jump out as a great movie but I could certainly be wrong about that.

I’m just so hyped for TDKR and TASM that they the other films coming out just can’t compare. If both are what I hope they are I’ll be seeing them at least twice in the theater. Don’t get me wrong Savages and The Watch look great and I’ll without a doubt watch them but they will probably have to wait until Blu-ray…

Can’t wait to see how TDKR unfolds and looking forward to the post scene credit after TASM. Im not gonna waste time saying how great both will be cause we all know they are gonna be game changers for both franchises. If they don’t replace Batman with Nightwing in the next film, look forward to a reboot or younger actor to play Batman in the next film since Nolan and Bale are done.

I am intreseted in The Amazing Spiderman and The Dark Knight Rises.

Personally I think the rights should have been given back to Marvel so Spiderman can join The Avengers, just like in the comics.

Still I wondered why reboot the series after the last movie came out 5 years ago, it’s doesn’t make sense.

Even I hope Spiderman and TDKR break records.

  I had to explain why the actors were different in this one compared to the last three to an 8 year old. I’m not a big comic book reader but everything that I know shows Spidey being young… Can’t have Tobey (who is what, 40?) playing Spidey anymore. Made sense to him.

    Simply put Spider-man is being rebooted because Sony needed to release a Spider-man movie by 2012 or the rights would revert to Marvel. Sony threw a lot of money at Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire, and Kristen Dunst to do a 4th movie (all 3 said 3 was it but money talks). However Raimi said he couldn’t have a movie out by 2012 and Maguire and Dunst said they weren’t doing it without Raimi (actually I think Dunst said she was out altogether regardless of money). Given that scenario Sony opted to reboot and take the opportunity to draw upon thematic elements of Twilight and Dark Knight (mega-hits at the time).
    
    So yeah – Sony isn’t giving back the rights any time soon.

      They may not need to. Supposedly Disney and Sony will allow crossovers between the two film series. We will probably see Spider-Man in the next Avengers movie.
      
      Hopefully Disney can do the same with X-Men.

        Hadn’t heard that but it could happen. To be honest though I’d rather not see Spider-man (who I should mention is my favorite superhero) in an Avenger’s movie.
        
        Despite Marvel’s current thought to shove Spidey (and for that matter Wolverine) on to every team they can find – Spidey works best as a solo character (or at least with his own set of allies).
        
        I’m also not sure it makes sense from a business or movie prospective. As we’ve seen adding more does not always make things better. Trying to cram to much into a 2 or 3 hour movie often results in a disappointing movie for many (witness Spider-man 3). The Avengers pulled off an incredible balancing act. Adding Spidey could tip the scale. Plus of course the Avengers have a number of other characters to draw upon and introduce that can add to the pile of merchadising.

        One reason why it should: Peter Parker lives in New York City – the same city that was nearly destroyed in The Avengers. Do you really think he would just sit back and do nothing? The very least they could do is acknowledge he exists and that he is off somewhere else at the moment.

        And on top of that, where were the avengers during the events of The Amazing Spider-Man? A giant lizard is ravaging New York, and what? SHIELD and the avengers are just sitting back letting the teenager take it on himself? At this point, it just wouldn’t make sense to have Spidey and the Avengers in the same universe.

        I don’t know where you heard that, but it’s not true.
        Sony has expressed interest in the POSSIBILITY of having Spidey show up in an Avengers movie, but Marvel Studios has outright said that they are more than happy enough with their own properties, but would love it if the rights could revert back.
        Feige also said that they haven’t even talked about the possibility of having crossovers from the different studios.

        Disney has enough cash to buy the rights back if they wanted to. they could probably buy Sony Pictures as well.
        
        Neither is likely to happen, so why can’t the two work together for the sake of the fans – the people responsible for their paychecks?

No real interest in Spider-man other than to see how well it does at the box office. It’s doing fairly well on RT with about 1/3 of the usual critic votes in and the buzz has been generally good (although not great). I predict it will settle in the high 60′s-low 70′s. The whole premature reboot thing seems to be confusing the average movie goer but with little else to see this week, I think it’s poised to be the top box office draw this week (and the next).

And while I’m sure TDKR will cut that streak short, It will most likely be enough to keep Sony moving forward with a SM2 (which is frankly sad). Sorry but I really think Marvel deserves to get its property back.

I work at a theater and we saw spiderman last night. Pretty disappointing but not bad. The Lizard is pretty cool. I’m thinking SR gives it a 3.5. Biggest criticism of it from my coworkers was that it was boring.

  I mean, the fans (like you and me) are hardly a match to the general audience and the normal everyday moviegoer won’t boycott this movie, so really, what’s the point?
  Plus, The Avengers have more than enough members to still introduce, they don’t need to bring Spidey into the mix as well IMO…

The Amazing Spider-Man and The dark ?Knight Rises are definitely on my list, the others? Not really.

I wasn’t interested in red Lights based on the plot, but now that I know the director, I’m kind of intrigued. I was interested in savages but the book was a mess and I can’t imagine the movie being better. I’ll be skipping The watch, most of the actors there annoy me and I didn’t laugh at any of the trailers.

I’m more interested in Beasts of the Southern Wild, which I’m hoping gets to my theater this month, especially after a friend saw it at a press screening and won’t stop talking about it, and ruby sparks, which looks like a sweet love story and Dave Karger of EW called it the best movie of the year.

Spidey in 3d, not really wanting to see it in the 3d blah, with my bro for his early bday gift then use the midnight ticket i have for Bats. Savages has been one i am considering while the others are not on my radar. I will probably see Ted this week also along with Ole Abe.

I just hope i will see Bats once, have a strong desire to dress up as Nightwing and start ranting through out the movie institing he should have been in it…lol

After Nolan´s trilogy there wont be more Batman origin story….there will be so little you could do with the Batman character(Justice League)…There wont be the necessity to reboot this series ever.

To be honest, The Dark Knight Rises has been the only movie I’ve been looking forward to since June 2011.

The Avengers was second but I only felt excited for that in the 2 weeks before release in April and Spiderman…..that’s been “meh” all along for me.

The Dark Knight Rises (the recent trailers were all the convincing I needed)
The Amazing Spider-Man (I’m ready to see a FUNNY Spider-Man)
The Watch (I like Ben Stiller flicks)
