thor cast jude law robert de niro Jude Law & Robert De Niro Join Thor Cast?

In last two weeks there have been a few additional announcements made for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Thor film. We learned that Stellan Skarsgård, father of Thor candidate Alexander Skarsgård, was cast into the movie but he had to remain tight-lipped about who he was playing. Following that, a pair of open casting calls surfaced that asked for a college student and a bunch of large “fearless” warriors.

So, if you weren’t excited about the cast so far which also includes Chris Hemsworth as the title character, Tom Hiddleston as his nemesis, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore and possibly Brian Blessed as Odin, you might be more excited now with the following two names possibly added to the cast.

According to actor Matthias Schweighöfer (Valkyrie) in an interview for the German edition of GQ, he reveals that he’s in the running for a role in Thor but that Jude Law and Robert De Niro have also already been cast. Yes, De Niro and Jude Law in one of the next Marvel Superhero epics…

There’s no word on who any of them would play, keeping with the secrecy we’ve seen surrounding many of the characters and the story of the film. Even when they asked Stellan Skarsgård to join, they did so without giving him a script to which he said no unless he got to read one. So, he eventually received a coded script that allows only one printing.

With many of the key characters cast, it’s anyone’s guess as to who Feore, Skarsgård, De Niro, Law and Schweighöfer would play but one thing’s for sure – director Kenneth Branagh sure has an eye for talent, most of which that have a Shakespearean background to match his own.

At first glance, I found it slightly weird to think of these two as part of the cast, but the more I think about it, the more I dig it. They’re both big names and both will help draw in more moviegoers. As for Law, I’m happy to see him back in the limelight now that he’s older. With his role as Watson in Sherlock Holmes this December and now a role in Thor, he’s back big time. De Niro in this movie may be tougher pill to swallow but it’s very believable considering he and Kenneth Branagh worked together on Frankenstein back in the day – Branagh directed that as well and they both acted in it.

What do you think of the possible cast of Thor now? Who do you think these actors could be playing in the film?

Thor begins production next year with a release date of May 20, 2011.

  1. This is a great rumor because they would make great additions to the cast.

  2. Law – Fandral the Dasshing
De Niro – Balder the Brave

  3. I Will belive this one when it is announced.
I hope its true, but it sounds bizarre.
How would someone who hasent been cast yet know that Deniro and Law had been cast?

  4. Jude Law should be the young Magneto, in the MAGNETO MOVIE

  5. Ricky07

That’s a great idea for young Magneto. I’m afraid there may not be a Magneto movie though.

  6. @Chad
I’m with you on that theory.

  7. man this is shapeing up to be one kickass movie, its just me but i still think that the avengers movie will be pushed back i mean its never been done before and it just seems so massive, plus how r they gonna put all that stuff in one movie i mean it would have to be at least 3 hours to do it justice. hope im wrong though for sure.

  8. I think we might be having our collective legs pulled with this one.

  9. Fandal and Hogan

More excited for this film than any other Superhero flick !!!

This could be a Big Beautiful Walt Simonson Comic brought alive.

But Brian Blessed better f–king be Odin!!

  10. I don’t know, this is good news and bad news to me. Good news is that they are both a-list actors, bad news is that most likely neither Jude Law or Robert De Niro would be willing to be recurring characters in the Marvel universe so they will just appear once and that’s it. It would be cooler to get some good actors that are willing to show up more than once… We’ll see, maybe they are both willing, who knows, I just think they are “too big” to want to be in more than one comic book movie…

  11. well jude law is not going to be in it as just a small role so i say hes either loki,or hes thor as a human.

  12. @ chris, Loki and Thor are set so Jude would be in some supporting role.

    @ Lord Garth,

Agreed. Of all the Marvel solo films in development (or any other comic book movie), Thor is by far the one I’m most excited for.

  13. I gotta wait for the official announcement. DeNiro’s name is almost too good to be true. It doesn’t mean I’m not excited about it though. DeNiro and Skaarsgard also worked together before on “Ronin”(personal favorite)Definitely excited though!

  14. “You talkin’ to Odin?”

“You must be talkin’ to Odin, I don’t see any other Asgardians here.”

  15. This is how I’m going to call it:

We know Brian Blessed is up for Odin…
I’m thinking Jude Law is Tyr.
    Matthias Schweighöfer is Vidar (?)
Skaarsgard and DeNiro? Vili and Ve.

In other words, I thinking we are looking at the core of Midguard/Asgard.

(Note: a younger DeNiro might have passed for Absorbing Man, but I don’t think that character is involved)

  16. I agree with Lord Garth, I am more excited for Brian Blessed.

But that isn’t to say Law and DeNiro aren’t going to rock any character they are given.

  17. @Rob..

This is probably my LEAST anticipated comic book movie. Not that I won’t be seeing it, but I am more interested in Iron Man 2 and Captain America.

  18. “bad news is that most likely neither Jude Law or Robert De Niro would be willing to be recurring characters in the Marvel universe”

Uhhh … De Niro had a recurring role with the Fockers, Thor shouldn’t be beneath him to do recurring roles.

  19. Rob, it isn’t April 1st yet. :-)

This sounds to good to be true.

  20. Looks like this rumour has been debunked. And it seems they plan on starting to shoot Thor in 8-10 weeks!!! :)

  21. @ Kahless,

    lol, you just wait

  22. DeNiro as Balder or Heimdall…

  23. I think DeNero is up for playing Odin and Brian Blessed is is going to be playing the dude with the big red beard! think about it, you could easily see DeNero coming in to do a cameo as Odin.
    It’s in the bag man!

  24. If this is true, could we be seeing the effects of Disney’s purchase of Marvel already?
