Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Trailer1 Journey 2: The Mysterious Island International Trailer: Behold Atlantis

Journey to the Center of the Earth came out when the 3D resurrection had not yet hit full stride (Avatar wouldn’t hit the scene until a year later), but the family adventure film managed to do pretty well for itself, earning $250 million worldwide on a modest $60 million budget. Hence why a sequel film was an all-but-assured bet.

Well, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island will soon be upon us, with returning cast member Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), being partnered up with a host of franchise newcomers that include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzmán (How to Make it in America) and even the impeccable Michael Caine. We now have the international trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island to share.

Check out the synopsis for this new chapter in the Journey franchise:

The new journey begins when Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist — a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes, and more than one astonishing secret. The secret is rumored to involve Sean’s missing grandfather, Alexander Anderson (Michael Caine). Unable to stop him from going, Sean’s new stepfather (Dwayne Johnson) joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot (Luis Guzman) and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.

That synopsis reads like the type of sequel you would find in the heyday of the 1980s – specifically the bit where Sean’s uncle (played by Brendan Fraser in the first film) has been oh-so-conveniently swapped for his stepfather, played by Johnson. But I digress.

Here’s the international trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - which features less man-boob bouncing than the Journey 2 domestic trailer did:

All in all, this looks like a fun enough family adventure film featuring a(n) (overly?) talented cast that will only elevate this sort of material (with the possible exception of Hudgens). For my own money, seeing The Rock replace Brendan Fraser is a worthy trade – though it’s hard not to feel like Hutcherson’s star hasn’t risen above this franchise – what with his starring turns in critically-lauded films like The Kids Are All Right and his current status, poised for a blockbuster breakout in next year’s Hunger Games movie adaptation.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was shot in 3D and will hit theaters on February 10, 2012.

  1. The Rock should really quit doing these kinds of movies. if he wants to flex his acting chops do so serious quality drama films or something. or just stick with real action films!

  2. Hey buddy, he did do Gridiron Gang and Walking Tall.

    • oh yea SUUURE, but he also did DOOM…which we ALL KNOW was a joke. thank god its being remade :P

  3. I will say that I’m getting a little tired of these roles that he’s taking, but hey,I’m sure that he’s getting paid well for them.

It is a shame though, because he really is a good actor and it seems that he’s wasting opportunities for some major roles. Now that is assuming that he’s getting offered any of these roles, because who knows what’s going on behind the scenes in Hollywood.

  4. I just wish they kept Brendan Fraser and the Icelandic chick from the first one.

    • your right about that. they crewed up with this one

  5. What does it matter if he does these types of movies? Does a kitten die when Mr. Johnson stars in these types of movies?

Do you see him doing these types of movies and decide not to watch him in the movies you like to see him in?

Watch a movie for the movie not the actor in it. While an actor can enhance (or degrade) a movie, the sole reason to watch a movie should not be based on the actor in it. IMO.

    • you are wrong. the actors make the movie, why would anyone want to watch a movie when they dont like the actor in it. they wont like the movie. some actors fit the part and some dont when this movie is a franchise

  6. I think that Brendan Fraser should not have been replaced! It wont be the same with him and the lady that played Hannah. Johnson should not be in the movie. he is not the right type for the roll. same with Luis Guzman. I don’t have a problem with adding new cast members. Johnson doesn’t even look or talk like he would match up with Sean’s mom. Very disappointed about the new movie coming out. I will more then likely not go to see the movie or buy it when it comes on DVD

  7. i think brendan fraiser should have played journy 2 but u gotta understand producers & directors might not always get the actors they want cuz the actor maybe doing another movie @ the time they try really hard ya know & the rock is awsome u shouldn’t be doggin on him the movie buisness can b tough for all the actores & producers they go through a lot of stress u can tell by the special features behind the sceans on some movies i only wish that they would put more bloopers on movies & if i had a way to b in a movie or have my boys in one i would b the happiest mom ever
