Joss Whedon and Morgan Spurlock Making Comic-Con Doc?

Fan favorite Joss Whedon and the award-winning Morgan Spurlock may be teaming up to make a documentary about Comic-Con, the biggest geek convention of the year.

Joss Whedon and Morgan Spurlock - Comic-Con documentary

If you’re one of the tens of thousands that flock to San Diego, California every year for the “Mecca of Geekdom” that is Comic-Con then you may be interested to find out that two well-known names in the movie world are supposedly going to make a documentary about the whole experience.

According to unnamed sources at E! (read: this may not be true), Joss Whedon (Firefly, Serenity, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and award-winning documentary filmmaker, Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me), are going to be making a Comic-Con documentary that follows a select group of fans before and during the convention.

Who that group of fans will be remains to be decided but if you attend Comic-Con slavishly every year and would categorize yourself as a big fan of all the comics, superhero movies, costumes and everything else it has to offer (i.e. somewhat of a proud geek) then you could be part of the group Whedon and Spurlock will center the doc around.

E!‘s source says – “They want to follow people for about three months leading up to this year’s Comic-Con… And then they want to film them there. They’re looking at all types of people.” Unfortunately neither Whedon nor Spurlock commented immediately on the reported plans but note that doesn’t mean that it’s not happening (nor does it mean it IS definitely happening, either).

Spurlock and Whedon are no strangers to conventions like Comic-Con, whether through their work or in person: Whedon of course has created a few of the most popular geek shows and movies (namely Buffy and Firefly, the latter having whole conventions dedicated to it) and has attended the convention before (he was there last year for the Dollhouse panel). And Spurlock was there last year making a documentary for the 20th anniversary of The Simpsons.

I have yet to personally experience Comic-Con but the plan is to change that this year. I live in the UK (Scotland) so it’s a long haul but I can’t wait to find out what everyone makes a huge fuss over every year. Other writers at Screen Rant, however, have been covering the event for a few years now. You check out all of what we’ve covered so far HERE.

If this Whedon/Spurlock thing turns out to be true I’ll certainly be interested in checking the documentary out (even if Whedon and Spurlock is an odd pairing). The idea of a sure-to-be-entertaining real (read: not a spoof) documentary about the biggest convention in movies and comics doesn’t sound like wasted time in the theater to me.

Would you be interested in seeing a documentary about Comic-Con from the team of Whedon and Spurlock?

  1. Sounds like it should be entertaining.

  2. I'd definitely be interested

  3. Oh you MUST go to Comic Con at least once. It's amazing. I would give up my birthday and Christmas for Comic Con. I am fortunate enough to live in San Diego and go every year. Saturday tickets were sold out within 3 days of going on sale for this year's event!

  4. Sure, just as long as theres no singing & dancing. But I think Triumph the Insult Comic Dog already did a 10 minute segment with this and it was freaking hilarious.

  5. So am I right in thinking everyone at Comic-Con are absolute virgins who can't get girlfriends and so lock their desires away in the form of sci-fi?

Sigh, I confess. Well, I live in England too.
