Joss Whedon ‘Excited’ For ‘Avengers 2′ Villain; Hopes Sequel is Better

The Avengers 2 Release Date Joss Whedon Excited For Avengers 2 Villain; Hopes Sequel is Better

Joss Whedon, who’s made headlines recently for talking up the two new characters he’s adding to The Avengers 2 roster, handed in the first draft of the sequel’s screenplay before he began work helming the pilot for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television show on ABC. While the writer and director has revealed who the new hero additions will be, he’s yet to disclose who they’re up against.

The untitled sequel to The Avengers is still two years out and we’re still deciphering who the villain(s) of next year’s Guardians of the Galaxy will be, but Whedon isn’t afraid of talking about how he’s shaping The Avengers 2 and aims to focus on the team dynamic.

In chatting with Empire, Whedon agrees that the common sequel formula of shifting focus away from the core characters and onto the villain is not going to work for him:

“Yes, that always makes me cranky. I’m very excited about the villain, and have a lot to say about him. But if you watch my shows, the one thing I’ve never been very good at is guest stars, because I’ve always been so interested in the ensemble. With The Avengers, I’m still most fascinated by them. How do these guys feel, and what’s the way they conflict, and what’s the unexpected way they connect? Forming a team is one story; being a team is a very different story. The other thing is, you don’t try to top it. I know I will never make as pleasing a moment in a film as Hulk and Loki. You can’t chase that dragon. If you try to do exactly the same thing, the chances you’re going to do it better are very slim, and the only reason for me to devote three years to making another Avengers movie is the hope of making a better one.”

From his choice words, Whedon hints that the main villain of The Avengers sequel is a singular foe and is a male. Not much to go on, but with new enemies to be revealed in Thor: The Dark World this fall, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy next year, not to mention the promised return of the Extremis serum from Iron Man 3, there’s a lot for Whedon to draw from that’s already going to have been introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Let’s not forget that Thanos is almost a sure bet for a return appearance in The Avengers 2 as well, potentially in a limited capacity if he’s being saved for the long haul (see: Phase Three).

The Avengers 2 Scarlet Witch Quicksilver 570x357 Joss Whedon Excited For Avengers 2 Villain; Hopes Sequel is Better

While Whedon claims he’s not going to go “bigger” with the sequel, the spectacle and action will be there and that means the (now larger) Avengers team needs to battle enemies more fierce than the Chitauri and their flying sleds and space whales from The Avengers. Hulk’s gotta SMASH, after all. In an interview a few weeks ago in talking about the purpose of introducing Thanos in the post-credits scene of The Avengers, Whedon loosely touches upon the big picture villain plans:

“Well, Thanos is more powerful. He is so powerful he is not someone you can just try out and punch him. Like he did in the comics, you want him threading through the universe and to save the big finale for the big finale. He is definitely a part of what I have got going on.

The thing about The Avengers is that they are very powerful but not very stable. So, there will definitely be some people that will shake them up in the next installment.”

The “people” in this case may not necessarily refer to multiple villains, but to new roster additions Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch who Whedon went on record describing as a brother-sister act that may not agree with how The Avengers function. Perhaps the “bad guy” isn’t necessarily that bad and just maybe, Whedon is giving us the biggest hint ever in saying the sequel really does get personal and focus on the team dynamic being tested – could the Hulk take a turn for the worse and could the rumors about it leading to a Planet Hulk movie be true? Multiple sources, including Whedon himself, say otherwise so the only thing we can expect for certain, is “death.”

Iron Man 3 is currently in theaters, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6, 2015, and Doctor Strange sometime after that.

    • ryan, please learn English.

      • Correcting on his grammer? Really?

        • Haha see what i did there?

      • Might not be his first language man.

      • Don’t troll, friend.

      • cave-ish Man, please capitalize proper names like Ryan. Ka-bing!

        • Didn’t capitalize Cave-ish! Ka-blonk!

        • examination

    • But you need F4 to use Kang as a villain, don’t you ?

      • Why?

      • Kang has been a villain in both The Fantastic Four and Avengers (although I confess I think of him more as an FF villain, I would love to see him fight The Avengers).

    • I love Kang i he’s one of my favorite bad guys from Marvel i would love to see him take on the avengers. :)

    • Bring back abomination and the leader. ..

      • Member how the leader in emh tried to gamma bomb everyone, maybe that cud explain quicksilver n scarlet whiches powers… or intoduce the terrigen mist’s n set it up for the inhumans…

    • Kang would be a great villian. Anbody else got any other ideas of who this villian can be. Ultron I wish haha.

      • Yeah, Ultron would kill ‘em all off. Kang would be good but I’d really luv to see Dr. Doom though to be honest. The only thing that makes me pause on the idea for doom comming in is if they get the right actor to portray him. I didn’t really like the guy who portrayed him in the fantastic four at all. I also hope and pray that fox gives marvel rights to some of the x men so that there might be a slight chance of deadpool showing up again. That’s my thoughts though

  1. That shouldn’t be difficult. He certainly set the bar low enough with the first one.

      • I also pegged Thanos as the Avengers III villain.

I would be really surprised if AV II isn’t better than AV I.

      • It was almost as bad as TDKR. Almost.

        • Now that you’ve gotten that off your chest maybe we can stick to the actual topic of this thread- The Avengers franchise.

          • +1

      • Dazz – maybe you should just not watch these films if you didn’t like A & IM2.

    • I have a feeling that Avengers 2 could be 10 times better and still some people would complain about it. Cant please everyone. I just hope they let Whedon have free reign and let him tell the story he wants.

  2. It’s a crime shame that Dr. Doom belongs to FOX…

    • Crying shame*. And I agree. Doom is my favorite villain. Sucks we’ll never see him in the MCU, as he would be a good foil for The Avengers.

      • Doom is epic. Agreed its very unfortunate that he wont be part of the MCU.

        • Umm, yes “crying” shame. *ahem*

Picture this: instead of all the Avengers getting scattered and dealing with an entire alien army… imagine it’s all of them vs. Doom for an entire full 30 min. A 30 min action sequence of 6 v 1 all showing off different traits vs. Dr. Doom. Obviously you can do something like this with Thanos, hopefully this is something we will get to see in A2.

          • That would be so cool. Yeah i personally hope its not just another token hord of nameless bidepal punching bags.. And space whales. I suppose Ultron could provide a similar threat as Doom on the 6 vs 1 for 30 mins scale. Though it more or less always ends by pum going inside Ultron and turning the switch off lol. with Whedon’s comments that his focus will remain on the Avengers themselves and their interactions amongst each other perhaps a villain like Doom would be waste to a certain extent. He’s a very layered character and if used just as a punching bag it could have been a letdown. Personally if Fox has a sack, they’ll do an actual feature film on Doom. Arguably the best thing about xmen first class was Magneto. Doom is another “villain” that deserves the spotlight and not in the shadow or as a simple foil to the FF.

  3. Really liking how Avengers 2 is shaping up from what we’re hearing. Glad Whedon is into it and trying to add something new instead of a simple rehash.

  4. Yeah, I also hope that the sequel is better.

    • I hope it’s worse.

  5. Villains I’d like to see (not necessarily in order) against The Avengers:
Kang, Ultron, Skrulls or at least Super-Skrull, a REAL Mandarin, Diablo, Whirlwind.

Heroes we need to add (Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, but now we are getting them): Goliath (Hank Pym) and Wasp. Maybe in Avengers #3 Black Panther, Vision, or the black female Captain Marvel, but those three are not as “priority” with me or essential to early Avengers origins as the others.

    • I’m pretty sure Fox owns the Super Skrull because he goes wit the FF. The Skrull in general however are fair game.

      • Hmmm, possible. Super-Skrull did fight the FF in the comics.

    • ^ black-costumed Ms. Marvel (I don’t like the Captain Marvel name since it was the old school Fawcett Comics/DC hero’s name before DC officially changed it to Shazan, which is a terrible name imo).

And, yes, all those characters should definitely make cinematic appearances at some point.

      • No, he didn’t mean Carol Danvers, he meant Monica Rambeau, the second Captain Marvel from the comics. She was an African-American from New orleans. Doubt she’ll be in, though, at least with the Cap moniker.

        • Damn it. I did a cursory search for Ms. Marvel/Captain and MR didn’t pop up. Oh well, if SR had an edit button, I’d delete that part. Alas, SR does not.

        • Was that who she was? I honestly don’t remember much about her, other than I liked her in the comics, and she looked classy. Pretty bad when I get old, senile, and forgetful (hee-hee!).

      • As for Ms. Marvel, I don’t care if she’s black or white as long as she’s HOT.

        • I do care. Ms. Marvel is supposed to be a smoking hot blonde…

          • If she’s called Ms. Marvel in the movie, then you have a point. But, if she’s called Captain Marvel, then she can be either. In the comics, MR was called Captain Marvel before CD. Although, more recently, MR has been called Pulsar. Nevertheless, Marvel will likely use the white female version.

          • Y’know what sucks Scapegoat? It’s apparently racist to not want racial changes to source material.

I agree with you 100%. Ms. Marvel should be a smoking hot blonde, in the same way Kingpin is supposed to be a huge fat white guy, Electro and the Human Torch aren’t black… you see where I’m going with this?

It sucks. You just want stuff to be like it is in the comics, and you get called a racist or intolerant or whatever.

            • THANK YOU!! Someone has the guts to say it. If a superhero/villain is white in the comics, please keep him white. If he’s black, please keep him black. If they made Black Panther white, there would be an uproar!

              • That’s a dumb example.

Black Panther’s ethnicity is intrinsic to his character. On the other hand, what does it matter if Perry White is black as long as he’s well acted? Aside from that, there are certain characters who have a very distinct look about them that is imagined when you hear their name, e.g. Ms. Marvel. Electro, on the other hand, can look like anyone.

                • @pipes_46
You’re right it was a dumb example. But why should they be changed. I don’t have any issue with Jamie Foxx as Electro. I think he’ll be awesome. But to change race just for sake of change is pretty lame.

            • If I may… I agree partially with what you said. Miss marvel should be a blonde. However finding someone as imposin for king pin is a hard task, and I think Micheal Clark Duncan was perfect to play him.
electro…he’s a vilain, gonna get his ass kicked, not gonna be in next movie so who care his color?

Protagonists howver should not be changed as they most likely will re-appear. Goon like villains…They come, get beaten anf go hide in shadows.

          • So is my girlfriend, but…..

            • {{That was an answer to Scapegoat…they mixed up the answer continuity order a little bit}}.

          • Form fitting suit + fit bod + bewbs = awesome in any color of the rainbow lol

  6. Incidently, I personally enjoyed Avengers quite a bit…big huge action flick, although I would have rather sen Skrulls than Chitauri. Maybe later?? Iron Man #1 was great, but would have liked to have seen a REAL Mandarin then (as well as in IM#3). IM #2 needed some work and a better villain than Mr. Crack-The-Whip, but I bought the DVD, as I always do, anyways.

    • Skrulls wouldn’t have improved it. They would have had the same lack of depth, character and proper screen time the Chitauri had in the first one. That’s the only weak point of “The Avengers” for me. It was the same in IM3 with all his suits , but worse.

      • Yeah, probably right. Skrulls would be good, especially if there was one changing shape and using the heroes’ powers, but they would have needed more screen-time, indeed. (Oh well, I could’ve sat through another hour of movie action, I am sure. Lotsa popcorn in reserve!).

      • the chitauri are the skrulls in the Ultiomate alternate universe. They’re the less subtle branch of the specy as later in Ultimate FF4 the skrulls make an appearance and the chitauri are mentioned only if briefly.

  7. Avengers 2: revenge of the fallen chitauri

Avengers 3: the dark side of thanos

    • Well done

  8. As I’ve said before I really don’t know squat about Marvel’s catalog of Heros and Villians. Everything I know has come from watching the movies and while there have been minor mis-steps here and there I’ve really enjoyed everything so far.
One of the mis-steps IMO has been the villains. Between the solo-films and The Avengers you never got the sense that these heros were in any real danger. I’m not saying someone needs to die. You just always knew that everything would be fine by the time the credits started.
So that’s my biggest hope for The Avengers 2. I want to see these people tested in ways that bring a sense of fear to the audience.
It would also help if the trailers stopped showing significant moments of the final battle. Even though it wasn’t technically a “spoiler” showing The Hulk catching Iron Man during the final battle of The Avengers in every single trailer and tv spot ruined that moment.

    • THANKYOU!!!!!!,woooow even though u havent read any of the comics u couldn’t be anymore right!!! Speak the truth my brother!!!! I can’t stand it, now its like marvel has to show the movie as much as possible to get people to the theaters. Relax, millions of people will see the movie no matter what

  9. Mandarin will be the next villain. Bank on it!

  10. Possible return of RED SKULL?

Actually I hope not. He wasn’t the best villain in the comics, and even his wonderful portrayal in the movie left me a little disappointed.

    • Actually, I was thinking that’s pretty likely, considering what happened to him at the end of Captain America. We’ll see; Joss Whedon has said there were originally two villains in the first Avengers script, and I think the second was the Red Skull.

      • Whatever happened to the leader and abomination, joss should bring them back into play…

      • I’d be surprised if RS returned. Also, Hugo is on record saying that he wouldn’t likely be back.

        • Meh theyd just recast. Its a guy with a red skull face… Just get a good actor and ur set.

          • Eventually. Still, I highly doubt that RS will be in Avengers 2.

            • Unless they do a whole resurgence of hydra type scenario. But then instead of Loki being sent to earth with an army of chitauri, you’d just have the res skull being sent to earth with an army of hydra thats been waiting for his return or some such. Retread. Something different and new needs to be done.

    • LUTHOR… The Red Skull WILL be showing back up on phase 2 but not as the Avengers villain.

  11. I’m still holding out hope for Ultron.

My only concern with using him at this point is, after IM2 and now 3 with all the robots (well empty suits in 3), that Ultron might feel a bit too much like retread material. I would watch it regardless.

    • Ultron would be good as villain or one of the villains, but need Hank Pym/Goliath in there (and Wasp by association).

  12. Avengers 2 villain is a mystery, Thanos will be the villain for Avengers 2,and Ultron will be involved in Phase III since Ant man is being introduced in Phase III.

  13. Who else thinks Keith David would be an epic actor for Thanos. He’s got the build. The voice. Heck, he’s even got the Thanos smile

    • Good call. David definitely has the proper voice.

      • Thanks. Yes! It would be so epic to hear his voice boom in the theater

  14. Sounds like Whedon will own this movie

    Joss is Boss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

  15. Can we drop the whole ‘Planet Hulk’ thing? The Marvel guys have told us time and time again that they aren’t doing it. Yes, they do like to apply a bunch of smoke and mirrors to the details of their movies, but they professed a legitimately good reason as to why Planet Hulk wouldn’t work.

There are a wealth of Hulk stories that haven’t been told yet that would be a lot easier for them to relate to an audience than them jumping to the Planet Hulk story which involves him being exiled to space, landing on an alien planet, introducing a billion other Hulk characters, etc.

    • I don’t want Planet Hulk at all. Don’t waste time making that flick. Better story lines to do.

      • Want big green guys all over the place? Here, eat your greens. Gobble-gobble, all your Jolly Green Giant products and the Little Green Sprout as well. There. Done. On to something else.

  16. What about Ant-Man and Wasp? Aren’t they going to be in The Avengers 2?

    • Not as far as we know. Ant-Man will get his intro after The Avengers 2 in November 2015.

      • They just about have to add them in Avengers #3.

        • Lemme, correct your sentence there……

“They just about have to add them in Avengers #2 as Hank Pym, SHIELD scientist with a small but pivotal role”

That would be an AWESOME surprise Easter egg!

  17. i think avengers 2 is gonna out due the first avengers. i think they will have huge challenge making a avengers movie that is more better and more awesome then iron man 3.

  18. Avengers 2: Avenge Harder

    • Avengers 3: Avenge Hard with a Vengence

      • Avengers 4: Live Free or Avenge Hard and Avengers 5: It’s a Good Day to Avenge Hard. Someone had to finish them out :D

        • Hahaha that’s hilarious. Nick Fury and John McClane lay the hurt down on Thanos. Yippie-Ki-Yay!

          • I am willing to put money on the fact that bruce willis will show up at some point in the MCU. The guy will do anything for a paycheck these days.

            • What would be a good role for Bruce?

              • Earth X Captain America ;-)

  19. I think AIM/Hydra will end up being Thanos’s hand on earth in A2, possibly with RS but I will go with Strucker, also with all the talk of ‘death’ I don’t believe it will be Lady Death but an actual Death and I’m going to stick my neck out and say Steve Rogers, this will throw the Avengers into complete disarray before he miraculously comes back from the land on comic book death in time for A3 to lead the team into a huge finale

    • Hope not. Rather than sacrifice Iron Man, Captain America, or Thor, I’d sooner sacrifice Hawkeye, Hulk, Black Widow, Winter Soldier, and even Nick Fury, as unlikely as all that sounds. And I want to keep Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch around for awhile.

      • The character with the lowest lowest box office for his solo movie will die. I’m looking at capt at this point. Hehe.

        • Maybe Stee=ve Rogers dies, but they could use Bucky to take his place as Winter soldier is a russian super soldier. Just have him being freed by cap in captain america 2 and you have a fitting replacement. After all it was done in comics, after the civil war. You have a death of an icon, yet said icon go on trough another.

  20. I like the path all comic book movies are on right now except one thing worries me that could bring it all crashing down. The thought that things always need to get “bigger”. Bigger in scope, bigger action, badder enemies. No. This will only take you so far. The best storylines are ones that are cerebral. This is why The Joker is more popular than someone like Galactus. A Civil War type story would be great. Who even needs a villain when you have them fighting each other for what they all believe is right?

  21. Avengers 2 : The Return of RDJ

    • you make it sound like he went somewhere…

      • Would depend on contract renewal…i would cry if he didn’t come back. Lol

        • Ironman is coming back for avengers 2 no matter what… It just might not be RDJ in the suit.

Tom Cruise is waiting to spring out of Kevin Feigne’s closet the moment they loose RDJ. Lol

    • Lets just say what we are all thinking……Avengers 2 : RDJ cha-CHING!

  22. Avengers 2: Death at Budokan!

  23. I think the “death” should be Stark! It would make for great drama if he gave his life heroically & Iron Man (and RDJ) would’ve had a good run in the MCU.

    • Considering he’s the favorite character I think your onto something, we all know Joss just loves killing off our favorite characters! Though I’d rather Tony just randomly goes “Bye guys I’m off to my home planet” and then just:

  24. Possibly hulk might get the extremis serum and turn into the red hulk

    • But Red hulk was General Ross, wan’t he?

      • *was’nt

  25. Personally I wanted the avengers sequel to focus on the Kree/ Skrull war but King the Conqueror wouldn’t be so bad either

  26. Why not a return of A.I.M. and hydra with M.O.D.O.K.? As I recall he was not a true vilain, but rather a porr sap that A.I.M. experimented on and made into what he is now. What could be done could be a deranged experimemt that take over A.I.M. and use it’s ressources to exact what he think is due revenge.

  27. They had better use The Leader,Ultron,Wasp,Giant-Man,Warbird,She-Hulk, and Black Panther these characters are musts.
