[Update: Click here for the official announcement of who is the new Spider-Man.]

Word over at IESB is that Josh Hutcherson (aka Gabe from Little Manhattan, one of the cutest movies in the history of cinema) is now in the running to play Marc Webb’s teenage web-slinging Peter Parker in Spider-Man.  Hutcherson’s rave reviews may stem largely from his indie works – Little Manhattan, and the upcoming Sundance hit The Kids Are All Right - but he’s no stranger to blockbusters or genre flicks.  He was in Zathura, Journey to the Center of the Earth and will feature in MGM’s remake of Red Dawn.

IESB doesn’t specify where they’ve gotten this exclusive nugget of info, but do say they’ve contacted Hutcherson’s representation to see if there’s any truth to the rumor. They point out that both Hutcherson and Percy Jackson‘s  Logan Lerman, who was previously thought to be a lock for the new Spidey, are both “young, unknown, cheap” and ideal for the reboot’s purposes. Too bad Julie Taymor already snapped up indie rocker Reeve Carney for her Broadway production of Spider-Man, because the guy’s a dead ringer for Pete.

Still, to carry off a new franchise that will doubtless have a plethora of sequels, Hutcherson would be a smart way to go, since he’s been acting (quite well) since a tender age.  At least it’s a tighter race than all that Captain America hullabaloo, though then again, it’s early yet.

With a slated release of July 2012, the casting of the role of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man should be announced sooner rather than later. Emphasis on ‘should’. There’s been comparatively little outcry over the casting rumors so far… what do fans think? Are these two young actors interchangeable as far as the community is concerned, or is there yet another actor that you’re pulling for?

  1. i think that Adam Brody could be a good Peter Parker…Maybe?

  2. ~sigh~ I am not ready for more superhero casting drama. lol

  3. Get some Red Bull and some tylenol, buddy, and strap in…!

  4. Interesting. Type-wise I think he's great. If he'd been cast maybe ten years ago, then hell yes. But they're looking for someone actually high-school aged, and sadly, Adam is six years older than me, which means he's, what, 30.

  5. freddie highmore would be brilliant

  6. Highgmore would be fantastic as Peter Parker! Great skills and would be good at playing the two sides. Perfect age too…

  7. i think he's a great actor but theres just something about him that doesnt say “peter parker”

  8. his only proble it that he's british. the only thing that annoyed me in “August Rush” was that this kid who grew up on a new york orphanage has a british accent. he did a better job of hiding in for “Spiderwick Cronicles”. he'll have to work on it more but i guess he could do it.

  9. Thought his accent was pretty great myself in both films…

    • you are awesome ! you’re like the first comment i read that agrees with me .. thats EXACTLY what i said .. he could definetly pull it off if he got picked for this role :D

  10. why hasn't he been mentioned more before!? much better option than l.l. or josh h. though didnt he say he wanted to give up acting?

  11. hmmm.

  12. He is a much better fit for Harry Osborne.

  13. Dont shoot me, but what about Milo Ventimiglia from Heroes?

  14. lmao. Why don't we just start guessing who they're going to cast for Martian Manhunter, Ant Man, The Superman Reboot, Robin (both Dick Grayson and Tim Drake) and what the heck… let's just go ahead and cast The New Warriors and Alpha Flight too.

  15. too old. if I'm thinking of the right guy…. He plays Peter right?

  16. Screw Peter Parker…. they need to cast the most important role in this film. Who is going to be Jolly J. Jonah Jameson? Cuz I thought J.K. Simmons was PERFECT. but I know they aren't likely to re-use actors.

Also…. Let's start talking about Eddie Brock/Venom now…. even if he isn't going to be in the first film or two. I don't want some scrawny little guy who is barely bigger that Petey himself. And I'm sure Sam Raimi had some kinda stupid concept about Venom symbolically being Spider-Man's evil twin brother… which is why he cast someone the same size as Toby…. but that was a mistake.

  17. I have no never heard of Hutcherson before but he look a lot better than Logan Lermen. Lermen was way too baby-faced. I just couldn't look at him and take him seriously. If Hutcherson is a good actor, then I say why not? I would personally love Jesse Eisenberg but I don't know if that would happen.

  18. Ant-Man = Alan Tudyk.

  19. Sure that's not just the hair talking…?

  20. Waaaaaaaaaay too old.

  21. If J.K. Simmons isn't Jonah, I am BOYCOTTING THIS MOVIE.

  22. I like Jessie for the role, too. Peter is a NERD. He is not a hot popular guy. But Jessie is cute in his own way and…. quite nerdly.

  23. I think the percy jackson kid looks more like peter than the other to do kinda nerdy

  24. There is no one person who says “peter parker” for everyone, I promise you that, he's a doggone comic book character. He's as good as any other young perky guy with a decent set of acting chops.

  25. Tobey Maguire is the real Spider-Man folks, and don't u forget that! am surely not watching the re-boot.

  26. whoever first mentioned freddy highmore is a genius. only viable suggestion for me so far. can totally see it working…

  27. that's cold — a lof of people at Sony is losing sleep because of you now :( monster.
