Joseph Gordon Levitt John Blake TDKR Joseph Gordon Levitt Could Lead Guardians of the Galaxy

A month ago we reported that Marvel Studios and director James Gunn had begun the casting process for the riskiest project coming from the studio over the next two years. The first character, and likely the most important, that Marvel is looking to cast is Peter Quill (Star-Lord), leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace and Eddie Redmayne had reportedly signed test deals with Marvel and went in for auditions for the part, and now, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a contender as well.

In addition to the five above reported by Deadline (Lee Pace confirmed he did audition), names including Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy), James Marsden (X-Men trilogy), and Sullivan Stapleton (Gangster Squad) were mentioned as well, but it wasn’t clear if they were in talks for the same role or even if they were auditioning as well.

More recently, that list was narrowed down by Variety to include only Jim Sturgess of the original list, in addition to Zachary Levi (Chuck) who already has a role with the studio playing Fandral in Thor: The Dark World. They teased a third unannounced candidate would be revealed after the winter holiday. In response to that report however, James Gunn took to his Facebook page (before deleting via Geek Tyrant) and disputed the accuracy of Variety’s report:

“Almost everything in that Variety article on the Guardians of the Galaxy casting (and all the following articles based on it) was/is completely inaccurate. Just for the record.”

He later clarified to IGN:

“I didn’t deny (or confirm) specifics. I just said the majority of the Variety article was inaccurate.”

Strangely enough, the part about a new candidate coming after the holiday was true and this brings us to Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Deadline has the latest scoop which indicates that after a busy and very successful year with Premium Rush, Looper, Lincoln and of course, The Dark Knight Rises, JGL is a candidate for the role of Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy – where he could potentially wear a mask similar to his character in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

If this report is accurate, it’s likely that Levitt is therefore not part of Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s plans for Batman going forward, where it was reported by HitFix that he could play the character of John Blake in Justice League, suiting up as Batman instead of Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne or a newly-cast version of him.

Would Marvel bringing Joseph Gordon-Levitt into their long-term plans of their franchise be a great steal from WB/DC and a smart casting choice to lead a team of otherworldly and unlikely heroes? Or does another name on the list sound more appealing? Expect more rumors and announcement soon, especially as Marvel and Gunn move on to casting the other members of the team and supporting cast.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015.

  1. sounds awesome! I wish they cast both him and Lee Pace in Guardians of the Galaxy, I don’t care which roles they get!

  2. i think i would to jgl play carnage someday in mark webb’s spider-man series and i hope bale is in justice league.

  3. I wonder what Warner Bros thinks about this? LOL I can’t help but wonder if he’s doing this on purpose to get a better deal from WB.

  4. hmmm could be interesting, personaly I dont know much about actors, usualy I go after certian genres, rather than films by actors. However for all you commenting about how you dont know much about StarLord, well most of us dont, as he is a rather newer character from a group of miniseries many marvelites(specialy those of us who like the older comics ;) ) dont follow that much. Personaly I am more curious about Ant-Man(specialy after I got the Essential Astonshing Ant-Man the other day boy has it been fun), also while his villians may not all be great, there are a couple good ones. For example, there is the Porpcine a battle-suit wearing scientest who decides to earn more money by robbing banks in a suit covered with tons of offensive weapondry in what other than quills!, and the Human top who later became Whirlwind(I am pretty sure he is attached to Ant-Man due to his origin in its pages, despite his being a mutant), and of Course EggHead his arch foe, a diabolical scientest with an oddly shaped head. ok so maybe those dont have you that much convinced, however there is one more great original villian who would be quite cool in a movie, and could later be a hero. The Black Knight, an evil scientest(yes a lot of his enemies are traitor scientests, it is the ’60s and his alter ego is Henry Pym, the chemical genius) who geneticaly engineered himself a flying horse, and created a Lance full of traps to capture giant-Man(still Pym) and a stun pistol, now he would be quite fun to see, and there have been 3 of them, and one was even a hero, that could show up later on (like Avengers 3!), well thats all I have to say

  5. Wouldn’t be a bad choice. I’d still take Joel Edgerton or Lee Pace before him but maybe they can snag the Ant Man role. :)

  6. Im still in awe that Marvel is still going to go with a rip off guardians of the galaxy team that no one cares about or really knows.

I mean in order to know this team you would have to be under 18. Ive been a fan of the original GOTG since the late 80s early 90s…this just doesnt sit well in my stomach.

Its like if they took The Avengers & used a team that anyone over 18 barely recognized…oh wait, they did do that. lol my bad.

  7. Since I know exactly squat about GotG I am indifferent about the whole Star-Lord thing, but if it means they keep him the hell away from JL then I am all for it.

  8. LOVE IT!!! sign him just so wb/dc will have MADE YET ANOTHER HUGE MISTAKE with their CBM’s and he is a very good up and coming actor that could be a great fit for GOTG

  9. I have a feeling we will get to know GOTG in phase 2 before their own movie, maybe in Thor or some after credits scene in one or two of the next films but for ppl that dont know them there needs to be an interest sparked and I think Marvel will introduce Pete Quill in one of these movies!! Or at least I hope they do, since he is a militry pilot They could Easily intro him somewhere along the line! WE know it wont be in IM3 but Hopefully Thor or even CA2 which comes out before GOTG, I think it would be wise to intro him in some capacity! it really looks like it will be in CA2 because Thor 2 is pretty much at the finish line

  10. JGL would make a great star lord, he’s the best of those auditioned/mentioned so far. disappointed though, if that means he wont be in justice league, but i’m MUCH more excited for guardians of the galaxy than JL, so oh well.

  11. Whatever keeps him out of the DC Universe for quite a while, I am okay with. Nolan tainted it with his trilogy. The Blake character will be remembered for quite a while. Still how I can’t see Cap without thinking, isn’t that The Human Torch? THANKFULLY they aren’t in a shared universe YET. But Robert Blake is still fresh. Stick him in a Marvel movie and let him be KNOWN as a different character so we can forget what Nolan did.

    • dude I couldn’t agree with you more… It pisses me off how directors always think they can make the story better by modifying it

    • John Blake… oops lol. Just noticed my mistake. Isn’t Robert Blake the Comedian?

  12. This is good news for me, it means hopefully hes not the next Batman, and I dont know why some are having a dig at DC/WB for like they just lost some awesome talent, JGL is nothing special at all imo, Keep him, I hope he stays with Disney to be honest, Ill vomit if he becomes the next Batman.
