JGL Joseph Gordon Levitt Has No Future Batman or Justice League Movie Plans (For Now)

WARNING!!! –  This post contains MAJOR SPOILERS for The Dark Knight Rises

Prior to the release of Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, the rumor mill was running rampant on how Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character might fit into the superhero-villain-heroine mix created by appearances from Batman, Bane, and Catwoman, respectively. While there are plenty of “normal” people in the Nolan trilogy (Commissioner Gordon and Alfred, among others) casting an up-and-comer like Levitt as an everyman police officer raised a few eyebrows and caused plenty of fan speculation. Would Levitt make an appearance as an unannounced villain (such as The Riddler) or possibly a superhero sidekick (such as Robin)?

Now that the film is out, we know that Levitt’s character, John Blake is Robin in both name and character, but as usual, Nolan wasn’t going to spell anything out. Despite a lot of carefully constructed arguments from the fan community about Blake’s post-Rises adventures, Joseph Gordon-Levitt recently confirmed that the filmmakers never talked about which “suit” (Batman, Nightwing, Robin, etc) the character would wear – when, and if, he actually took over for Bruce Wayne.

After the closing reveal of The Dark Knight Rises, many moviegoers (and media members), began hammering Levitt for answers about a possible sequel featuring the John Blake character. The actor quickly dismissed talk of a follow-up – claiming that the studio had not approached him about it and that, for him, reprising the role would be dependent on the quality of the script.

As mentioned in an interview with MTV, Levitt also dismissed the notion that Nolan had a particular alter-ego in mind for the character, asserting that they never talked about which “suit” the character might wear:

However, even if we never see Levitt fighting criminals on the streets of Gotham again, that doesn’t mean that fans aren’t interested in some closure about which fan-favorite Batman character he had been playing all along. Many enthusiasts argued that the reveal of the character’s first name, Robin (as in Robin John Blake), was a dead giveaway for the boy wonder (Dick Grayson); others felt as if Nightwing, despite the obvious nod to Batman’s most famous sidekick, would be a much better fit for Nolan’s universe. In the comic storylines, Robin (still Grayson) becomes Nightwing – taking on the persona as he matures. Similarly, Blake could have easily just become the new Batman – just like Grayson did (again) in the DC universe.

As we’ve talked about on the Screen Rant Underground podcast, the John Blake character is mostly an amalgamation of various iterations of Bat-sidekicks, not one specific person – a point that ties into the franchise idea about becoming a symbol, rather than just a man. It’s a theme that Levitt himself discussed when talking about a possible John Blake sequel on Jimmy Kimmel Live:

“I don’t think [the ending of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’] is necessarily a set-up. I think it is the great ending for that trilogy. Even if you go back to ‘Batman Begins,’ he’s talking about how Batman is more than a man, it’s a symbol, and a hero can be anybody and we all have heroes inside of us.”

Levitt has shown gratitude and excitement to be part of The Dark Knight Rises experience, but doesn’t have much to say about future Batman work. Screen Rant Managing Editor, Kofi Outlaw, had a chance to sit down with Levitt this week to discuss the actor’s upcoming film Premium Rush, and Levitt flat-out denied (or at least isn’t willing to talk about) any talks with Warner Bros. about post-TDKR plans – which would include the possibility of Blake appearing in DC’s in-development Justice League film.

Screen Rant: Have you seen the Justice League script that Will Beall is working on, or had any meetings with WB about being a part of their supehero universe?”

Levitt: Nope. [Pauses] No – the answer’s ‘no.’

For the time being, it’s probably best to let the subject of continuing Nolan’s Batman trilogy rest. Nolan and star Christian Bale have both said they are done with the character – and the legacy torchbearer, Levitt, clearly doesn’t have any new developments to report.

Of course, we’ll keep you updated if something changes – since some version of Batman will need to be called into action for the Justice League movie.

  1. I like the idea of a younger robin only if they get it right. All star batman and robin comics were awesome. i think that would be a good spin on the movie world for batman. Im just looking forward to whether levitt is going to play the next “batman”.But if he does will fit in the new justice league world they are goin to create. but i do agree with post from about 4 months ago “He doesn’t become Batman, in my opinion, because everyone in Gotham thinks Batman died. They built a statue of him and everything…” Levitt would be better as Nightwing. thats my option.

  2. Alright. I watched the video of Joseph Gordon-Levitt talking about the ending of the Dark Knight Rises. I don’t know about anyone else, but the end of the Dark Knight Rises just screams “SEQUEL” or “ROBIN/NIGHTWING”-based movie. I think that it would be a great idea to have at least one sequel to the Dark Knight Rises in which Joseph Gordon-Levitt is fighting crime as Nightwing. Anyone else agree or disagree?

    • I agree, there should be a Nightwing Spin off which can be considered the sequel to The Dark Knight Rises. The title of the article your reading it said (FOR NOW) at the end of the title which means it can be a surprise in the future, but unlikely because a batman reboot is coming around 2017, which is kinda stupid.

    • Nightwing Begins…

    • Actually , thinking about his characters demeanor in the movie ; I was leann gmore towards a” Azrael” . For those of you who don’t know Azrael was one of many who wore the “cowl” when it was thought the Batman was dead . Azrael was a one time assassin who took over during the Batman’s absence who thought the city needed to be “Cleansed” .Also , it wold be easier to do this background story then to try to have him as Robin, with no previous tie-in with Batman ; and since he couldn’t be Robin – he definitly could not be Nightwing. Since Robin evovled into Nightwing..
      Just saying… (:-)

    • TAgree and they should do it, this time since every bad character has played except the penguin he should be the next bad guy , to bad the joker is no longer because he made that movie awesome in the first dark knight , I think they should continue the movie with the same batman, not saying that Ben Affleck wouldn be a good one but it’s better to keep it the same makes the movie more interesting to watch

      • Lets not forget about Mr Freeze…man only if Patrick Stewart were younger. He would make an excellent Mr Freeze! But my actual choice would have to be Jason Statham..anybody like that? No no no omg what about Christoph Waltz?! :-)

    • I kind of liked him most in the role he had in this movie,,, I think I like him as a peacefull funny varrior instead of a seeerious saivor, I like that all the fighting war had a little twist to the absurd,, because its lewitt walking out and away to a new more peacefull future,, with more love and less killings!
Thats just me!,, Not all that fond of action chasing and gunfights

  3. Holy fukk jgl needs to play darth caedus in the up an comin starwars 7

    • Darth who?

  4. How can he not think that the end of TDKR screams spin-off with JGL as Nightwing? his name is Robin… and he is in the batcave in the end… he has all the tools. Why would he not just hero up? I want this fan service… make it so Warner Brothers.

  6. Batman Beyond (known as Batman of the Future in Europe, Japan, Latin America and Australia) is an American animated television series created by Warner Bros. Animation in collaboration with DC

Comics as a continuation of the Batman legacy. [1] Depicting teenager Terry McGinnis as a new Batman in a futuristic Gotham City under the tutelage of an elderly Bruce Wayne, the series began airing on January 10, 1999, and ended its run on December 18, 2001. After 52 episodes spanning three seasons and one direct-to-video film, the series was put on hold for the Justice League animated series, despite the network having announced plans for a fourth

    season. [2]

  7. Just Pleaseeeee Make our Nightwing movie And dont over do it enjoy creating the script just dont take a page from sumthing that has already been done

  8. Christopher Nolan and Bale both said they’re done with the Batman franchise, meaning, that it’s heading in the obvious direction of a Robin movie? Bale also saying he’s finished with this franchise doesn’t suggest he won’t appear in The Justice League Movie, which, in my opinion, needs Bale! With Nolan working on the upcoming Superman Movie, why wouldn’t he just go all out and work on the other Justice League hero’s to be introduced in the movie! WE NEED A ROBIN MOVIE! AND WE WANT NOLAN WORKING ON IT!

  9. The sequel to The Darknight Rises will be Batman 4 featuring Christian Bale as Batman. joseph Levitt will be Batman’s sidekick and Batman will call him Robin (his name), yet Robin will refer to himself as Nightwing. The storyline will follow the Azreal Knightfall story to some extent, however it will go somethng like this…

Batman attempts to retire as promised to Alfred… but, he is aware that Robin Blake is taking over but as Nightwing. Wayne Enterprises is profitable again and the Mansion is doing great with the orphans. Alfred is still there helping run orphanage and helping Nightwing. All of a sudden, a new criminal emerge, a mob boss kingpn type called The Penguin. Nightwing gears up to defeat him and his cronies but Batman appears! After several encounters, Nightwing is happy but Alfred assures him its not Bruce. Mogan Freedman, Alfred, and Nightwing discover its Azrael attempting to help but creating his own Batman paraphrenalia and gadgets. Azrael get out of hand as Batman which forces Bruce Wayne to once again become original Batman. Nightwing and Bruce Wayne attempt to stop the new Batman after they discover he’s capable of killing and that he is bipolar. catwoman gives up crime falls for Bruce Wayne and becomes Batgirl… she helps defeat new batman and the penguin. Then at the end, The new Joker appears to intro sequel Batman 5 which will be released after justice league movie. the new joker will be play by Johnny Depp. Nolan must release a Wonder Woman movie first that is grit and serious like the movie 300, and The Flash which should be like A cross between Hulk as a scientist burdened with a project gone bad but now he vows to try and be helpful with the confidence and wit of Captain Kurt new star trek movies, and Aquaman thats more like Tarzan, y Green Lantern as he is, then balance out league with a third girl to go along with batgirl and wonder woman… canery, which means we will need green arrow. The villian will be the introduction of Darkseid arrival as a result of Superman Man of Steel sequel dstruction of Krypton and and awareness of Apokylips of Earth because of Krypton sending Clark to earth… and

  10. Levitt is a really good actor and has came along way from 3rd Rock. He would make a great replacement for Bale if not better. At least he wont have the over the top voice. Honest to god! Who talks like that? Wouldn’t know if you should fight him or give him a lovenge.

  11. I think they should come up with another batman movie.JOKER’S RETURN would be awesome.

  12. Seriously? People STILL believe Nolan and Bale? Really?
    Batman Begins:
Nolan says he has no plans of making another Batman film.
Nolan says there is nothing about the ending that indicates Joker will be in the next film. “It was an homage to Jack Nicholson”.
Nolan says he is not working on another Batman film.
Bale says he is not going to be Batman again.
Same line from the same people.

Maybe they aren’t planning another film, or planned to do anything with Blake’s character, but, the boys Nolan, Goyer and Bale have not been to trustworthy in the past. Why believe them now?
Bloggers and media types buy this line of poodoo hook line and sinker every time.

  13. Id love to see Harley Quinn get thrown in the mix…played by…get ready…Aubrey Plaza! She has that deadpan comedic mentality that would suit the character perfectly. Only if Helena Bonham Carter were younger then she would be the perfect choice for the joker’s insane yet loyal lover.

  14. Id say the role of the penguin..Philip Seymour Hoffman would be ideal. Case closed lol

  15. Oh yea and Johnny Depp as the riddler!

  16. What if in the JUSTUCE LEAGUE MOVIE ckark kent confronts bruce wayne and convinces him to come out of retirement and help the new nightwing.l believe alfred or gorden or fox die protecting lantern should fight star sapphire .what if luthor forms the justice league befriends the man of steel and shoots him in slomo with the classic cryptonite bullet.lex then allows darkside to conquer the avenger style fight begins with batman dying in nightwings arms.then we see galactus and darkside talking.then boom a multiverse movie with the JL and the avengers

  17. You guys …..
The movie or the title from batman 3 was in my opinión never meant for bruce wayne.
It was meant for JGL . He would rise as the dark knight

  18. This is my first time pay a quick visit at here and i am actually impressed to read everthing at
    one place.

  19. I think JG-L would make a PERFECT fit as Robin! Going back to the original Teen Titans television show, Joseph and Robin, to me, look similar and show a similar personality. Maybe it’s not a hint at a Robin stand-alone movie, but a Teen Titans Movie, which would fit right in after the Justice League movie?

  20. I hope they make a new batman. With all the characters.

  21. Nightwing would be awesome! Maybe with deathstroke and robin as red x like the teen titans cartoon. Which btw is very in depth for a cartoon show. I remember all those good fights and story lines the titans faced. My solution, tdkr sequel, ” nightwing” with jgl as robin/nightwing/red x. Fox, alfred, gordon. Same actors, winona rider as ” kitty” cmpunk as “victor zaz” and Christofer lee as ” deathstroke” from there it should take a turn like the batman movies did with robin having to face a villain unrelated to the first movie like maybe, riddler, Harley quinn, victor freeze, penguin, killer croc although killer crock reminds me to much of ” lizard” from spiderman. So probably not him, but there are a lot of choices. Any way after that it should go back to the finale where nightwing teams up with kitty, catwoman, maybe a couple titans and of coarse and old withered batman who can still kick ass! Against an unrivaled team of deathstroke, brother blood, terra, beastboy, and maybe some hive members or unused batman villains! Ok now that youve read this ridiculous mind twister. Just think a true batman fan would pay big bucks to see a nightwing trilogy. Theres defiantly enough baddies and plenty of plot material thanks to dc comics and teen titan cartoon. I would love to see another Christofer nolan trilogy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. What about the penguin ?
