If the 2017 box office so far is any indication, an R-rated musical could be a sure fire hit. The two biggest movies of the year so far have been the R-rated Logan, and the sing-along Disney tale Beauty and the Beast, and it sounds as though Universal is going to be combine the two in their in-development project Wingmen, an adult-oriented musical about two pilots who crash-land in Las Vegas. The project is being described as “Pitch Perfect meets Book of Mormon,” and is based on a pitch by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Bacall.

The project is reminiscent of Gordon-Levitt's previous attempts to get a Guys and Dolls remake off the ground. Though that has stalled, Wingmen is reportedly moving forward, having found its leading men and with the announcement that Gordon-Levitt himself may direct.

As reported by VarietyGordon-Levitt was already set to star in the project, alongside Channing Tatum, who have both been attached since early last year. Bacall is penning the script for the film, and Mark Platt, Adam Siegel, Reid Carolin, and Peter Kiernan are producing (alongside Tatum and Gordon-Levitt).

Channing Tatum in Magic Mike

This will not be the first time that Tatum and Gordon-Levitt have co-starred in a film, having worked together on 2008's Stop-Loss. This will also be far from Gordon-Levitt's first time as a director, although it would be his first major motion picture, with most of his previous directing credits being short films and 2013's Don Jon, a romantic drama that was well-received by critics (and which he also starred in).

The film has the potential to be a huge success, but it won't be hitting screens too soon. Wingmen has been in development since early last year, and Universal has several big projects that it needs to wrap before getting started on this musical. Gordon-Levitt is also not yet confirmed as director for the film, just as one of the potential directors being considered.  However, it will be exciting to see what Tatum and Gordon-Levitt can do with this project, especially with their talents in both comedy and song-and-dance numbers, and the huge success of musicals and adult comedies in recent years. Although it's a bit of a risk to take, if done right, Wingmen could well become the next huge hit for comedy and singalongs.
