Jon Favreau Talks ‘Iron Man 2′ Deleted Scenes

Iron Man 2 hasn’t even made its public debut but that isn’t stopping director Jon Favreau from discussing potential DVD extras – including a set of deleted scenes.

That said, Favreau was quick to reassure fans – even though several scenes were clipped, or left on the cutting room floor, Iron Man 2 contains everything the director wanted:

“When we make changes, it’s ones that we’re all comfortable with. I like to be very collaborative with Marvel. It’s not like there’s a version that they strong-armed me into not using, so I stand behind what’s out there.”

The director went on to describe a couple of the scenes that didn’t make the final cut.

If you’ve seen any of the Iron Man 2 trailers, you’ll likely recognize the airplane scene between Tony Stark and Pepper Potts (before his entrance at Stark Expo 2010):

“There’s a scene that leads up to [Pepper throwing Iron Man's helmet off of a plane] that’s wonderful, but what it does is it ruins a surprise and ruins the momentum of the movie at the beginning. There’s a little bit of a misdirect that we wanted to sell and the reveal of him landing on the stage for the first time is better.”

Favreau even had the courage to cut a flirtatious scene, also featured in the film’s trailers, between Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Tony Stark:

“The relationship between Tony and Pepper is so special to the audience that if you let him and Scarlet get too flirty and close, the audience turns off very quickly.”

We’ve made sure to hit the big points here, but you can check out the entire MTV interview below:

It sounds as though, with regard to these particular scenes, the decision to leave them on the editing room floor was a good one. Iron Man 2 worked when it was focused, fast paced, and not too heavy on the banter – but when the film got bogged down, it suffered.

The two scenes were just mentioned on the fly and Favreau hinted at more potential DVD content, “There are other scenes that I like that don’t fit into the movie but I think are great.”

Sounds like there will be plenty to enjoy when Iron Man 2 arrives on DVD later this year. In the meantime, Iron Man 2 is already tearing up the box-office, albeit overseas – while North American fans count down the hours until Friday’s release.

What are your thoughts on Favreau’s comments? What other content would you like to see on the DVD?

Iron Man 2 is scheduled for release this Friday, May 7th.

  1. They sound like the sort of scenes that should be included on the bonus disc, but not in a director’s cut.

  2. im pretty shur favreau confirmed a commentary on the IM2 DVD.
i really wish the 1st film had a commentary.
    2 more days !

  3. I was wondering where the Pepper scene was. That said, the replacement was pretty bad-ass… won’t spoil it for anyone though.

  4. Can’t wait to see the film. Already heard about some scenes from the trailer being cut from the movie.

I think it’s a sin to remove even a single frame that features Scarlett Johansson ;-)

  5. Hope the deleted scenes make it into the IM2 DVD.
I have the Iron Man 2 disc DVD, and it’s a blast.

  6. I certainly hope Marvel doesn’t make it a habit to release films over seas before releasing it here. It makes me nervous to read any comments about the movie on this or any other forum. I know most people here try to avoid spoilers…. but now I already know who Olivia Munn plays.

I’m not saying we deserve to have it first or anything like that. (I’m not that egotistical) I think if anything films should be released simultaneously. And if Captain America comes out over seas before it does here, I will be flat out pissed off. lol

    • Who does olivia munn play i didnt see her!

      • She plays a news reporter at the Stark Expo at the beginning. Tiny role, not important.

    • Who does olivia munn play?

  7. I hope there are some deleted scenes that reference the Avengers a lil more. That would be cool. Maybe he is watching a Television screen and asks Nick Fury what’s going on. And Nick Tells him– “It’s the Hulk, he’s been rampaging across the Midwest.” “You need your head in the game Tony, this isn’t your league yet.”

  8. I already saw the movie… Got one word… AWSOME!!!

  9. They shoulda kept the Tony/Black Widow flirt scene! HE’S TONY STARK haha and frankly I don’t care for Pepper Potts at all to be honest. Hopefully she won’t bug me in this one. She annoys me as much as Mary Jane did in the Spidey films.

    • OMG She bugs you that much?!?!?!?! Cause that is ALOT!!! She MJ Bugs you?? SHEEESHH MAN THATS HEAVY MAN!! Cause you know Kristen Dunce really annoyed me in the Spiderman films.. So, if Pepper bugs you that much,, damn, I feel for you man.. I feel for you….

  10. I wonder just how much of a fan Ed Norton is? Wouldn’t it be fun to have him come in and guest comment with RDJ and Favreau for a DVD special edition? OK maybe not such a hot idea but what about Stan Lee?

  11. I’m sorry the movie was wonderful but soooooooo lame to cut that moment at the beginning with Pepper and Stark. I felt like I missed out when it didn’t happen and then it was all I could think about!!

  12. Those were the two scenes I wanted to see the most! They were in the trailer and really made me eager to see it, when they weren’t there I was disappointed. And I agree, its a sin to cut anything with Scarlett Johansson in it, especially in that dress :)
