Iron Man 2 hasn’t even made its public debut but that isn’t stopping director Jon Favreau from discussing potential DVD extras – including a set of deleted scenes.
That said, Favreau was quick to reassure fans – even though several scenes were clipped, or left on the cutting room floor, Iron Man 2 contains everything the director wanted:
“When we make changes, it’s ones that we’re all comfortable with. I like to be very collaborative with Marvel. It’s not like there’s a version that they strong-armed me into not using, so I stand behind what’s out there.”
The director went on to describe a couple of the scenes that didn’t make the final cut.
“There’s a scene that leads up to [Pepper throwing Iron Man's helmet off of a plane] that’s wonderful, but what it does is it ruins a surprise and ruins the momentum of the movie at the beginning. There’s a little bit of a misdirect that we wanted to sell and the reveal of him landing on the stage for the first time is better.”
Favreau even had the courage to cut a flirtatious scene, also featured in the film’s trailers, between Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Tony Stark:
“The relationship between Tony and Pepper is so special to the audience that if you let him and Scarlet get too flirty and close, the audience turns off very quickly.”
We’ve made sure to hit the big points here, but you can check out the entire MTV interview below:
It sounds as though, with regard to these particular scenes, the decision to leave them on the editing room floor was a good one. Iron Man 2 worked when it was focused, fast paced, and not too heavy on the banter – but when the film got bogged down, it suffered.
The two scenes were just mentioned on the fly and Favreau hinted at more potential DVD content, “There are other scenes that I like that don’t fit into the movie but I think are great.”
Sounds like there will be plenty to enjoy when Iron Man 2 arrives on DVD later this year. In the meantime, Iron Man 2 is already tearing up the box-office, albeit overseas – while North American fans count down the hours until Friday’s release.
What are your thoughts on Favreau’s comments? What other content would you like to see on the DVD?
Iron Man 2 is scheduled for release this Friday, May 7th.
