Now that the first look at Joker has arrived, let's take a look at some dark theories about Joaquin Phoenix's version of the character. Joker has already been featured many times before on the big screen, but never like this. There's been campier portrayals and Oscar-winning turns, but he has always been the villain to the film's main character, Batman. Thanks to Joker, director Todd Phillips is going to make him the center piece to his own origin story.

Warner Bros. and DC debuted the first trailer for the movie recently and it immediately got many people talking. It showed the downward spiral approach that is being given to Joker, or Arthur Fleck as he'll be known for part of the film, and his descent into the man readers of DC Comics are familiar with. Thanks to the decades of history that the comics have given Joker, fans have been diving into the footage to begin formulating some new theories.

In the latest Screen Rant video, we share a few theories of our own based on the trailer. The footage includes plenty of new details about the movie, and just as there are plot points that it establishes, it also leaves room for speculation. Check out the video at the top of this post for all of our Joker related theories.

Joker Trailer - Joker in Elevator

The trailer makes it clear that there is a breaking point for Arthur Fleck that turns him into the Joker, and while many have theorized it will be the result of the constant abuse he faces, one of the theories mentioned in the video is that it will actually be the death of his mother. The footage shows on multiple occasions that the two have a close relationship and appear to live together so Arthur can take care of her. But, if she were to die, then it could be the tipping point for him turning into the Clown Prince of Crime.

Of course, there are many other theories that have come as a result of the trailer, such as the possibility that it showed a young Bruce Wayne. Speeches by Thomas Wayne are included and set up his disdain for the Joker, and Arthur may take these criticisms personally and pay Wayne Manner a visit. The young boy who Joker forces a smile upon is heavily believed to be Bruce, setting up a very different connection between them. Since this is just the first trailer for Joker though, more theories will arise as new information is revealed, which could even debunk some of these.
