Johnny Depp Talks Wonderland, Pirates 4 & Dark Shadows

Johnny Depp recently spoke with Collider promoting his upcoming gangster flick, Public Enemies, where he also gave some new details on his upcoming projects Alice in Wonderland, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, and the upcoming Dark Shadows adaptation. He also talked about his collaborations with director Tim Burton, and why they work well together. I know, wanted to hear about The Lone Ranger and his role as Tonto, too…

Tim Burton’s upcoming take on Alice in Wonderland is definitely one fans of both Burton and Lewis Carroll’s original story are looking forward to. Burton and Wonderland go together perfectly – it’s been a long-time easy guess that the Edward Scissorhands director would take on the classic Wonderland tale at some point in his career.

Depp was just as much of a no-brainer to play a part in Alice in Wonderland; him being cast as The Mad Hatter being utter perfection in my books. Depp spoke to Collider about the kind of research he (and Burton) did for the film, where he revealed that, “the book is the basis for everything [they’re doing with the movie].” To be prepare for playing the character, Depp said there are, “little mysteries, little clues in the book that I found fascinating that were keys to at least my understanding of the Mad Hatter.”

For Alice in Wonderland, Depp also revealed he is very much on Burton’s creative boat as far as coming up with concept drawings for characters – “I made my little weird drawings and water colors and brought them to Tim [Burton] and he brought me his weird little drawings and water colors and they were not dissimilar [laughs]. You could’ve put them right together and they were pretty darn close.”

On Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Depp didn’t give much, other than saying what they’re “trying to do is just get a script in order and make sure it’s the right thing to do. If we can get a great script it’d be a ball.” As Collider points out, you can basically read that statement as the project is happening but we’re probably a long ways off from seeing it move into production.

For his next collaboration with Mr. Burton, after Alice in Wonderland, Depp spoke about the Dark Shadows adaptation, which he is excited about doing. Depp confirms that it, “is happening,” and reveals that the script is, “very, very close,” with he and Burton probably going to, “attack it next year.” He seems more enthusiastic and excited about this project than even Wonderland or even Pirates, adding that, “it’s very, very exciting… I loved the show when I was a kid… It’s like a lifelong dream for me.”

  1. I want to know if he’s the next joker…

  2. He wouldn’t be the joker. The joker is dead as a character as no one could replace him. Riddler would be good though as he has said he is open to.

I am excited for the Rum Diaries since Fear and Loathing was brilliant and it is a great book. I am also beyond excited for Alice. Anything he does is brilliant, but those are the two I am most looking forward to.

  3. Depp has a lot on the horizon and, for the most part, it all looks pretty good. I as well did not like (check that HATED) Pirates 2 and 3 but the first was good. If they can drift away from the whole romance going on with bloom and knightly- which i think they are doing- and make it solely about sparrow and barbosa it might turn out to be pretty exciting. Alice in Wonderland also looks like it is coming along great and I like teh approach they are having with this film. Public enemies shoudl be very entertaining as well and I am looking forward to it but I dont think that it will be as much of a box office success as his upcoming films

Nobidy is going to to top Ledger as the Joker yattty yatta…ok i understand the guy did a marvelous job but I think that if anyone else can continue teh kojer chracter it is Depp… I think they shoudl do it as a tribute to Ledger and a tribute to the franchise. Depp would NOt be trying to top ledger but simply finish a very well created character. We know he could play in the insane character (SParrow) so why not? People need to hop OFF Ledger, yea the guy did a great job and he died and i am glad he won all those awards and he deserved them, but seriously he is NOT the only one out there that could play teh charcter

  4. @Steve
how is the joker dead as a character? They can easily bring him back into the mix and they will. Maybe just not with the next movie.

  5. With what Nolan said about how hard ledger’s death rocked him I guess I assumed the character is dead. Depp is open to the riddler and personally I think that would be a better choice for him.

  6. and now depps willy wonka looks like a perfectly normal person….

  7. Isn’t J-Dawg (Johnny Depp) gonna be the Riddler? I heard that somewhere.

  8. I love johnny depp. i have enjoyed every one of his performances. but to be honest, i don’t think he could’ve done the joker the way that heath ledger did. Don’t get me wrong j-dawg is my #1 favorite actor of all time. i do think he’d make an amazing riddler though.

  9. also… Oh My God. that picture of him as the mad hatter is seriously creepy. i love it

  10. I REALLY want to see that Dark Shadows film .
    I hope it happens.
almolst as passionately as I hope POTC 4 NEVER sees the light of day.

  11. I have been a fan of Johnny Depp’s since Nightmare On Elm Street. He has always drawn me into a film, not just by his good looks but because of how he brings his characters to life before my eyes. He is a brillant man, whom I respect, and I look forward to seeing all of his films.

  12. I hope this film doesn’t ruin Depps career.

  13. Depp or Carrot Top?

  14. i doubt it could ruin his career. if nobody wants him after this, tim burton will still have him on his little boat of horrors so it’s all good. just look at any other movie he’s done and you’ll see why his career won’t end any time soon.

  15. I cant see Depp as either Joker or Riddler – his acting style is way too understated for such hyper maniacs.

As for Hatter, he looks ludicrous, i was hoping for something darker from Burton – rather like the comics “Beyond Wonderland”, now that i would love to see.

  16. The Riddler is the most insane of the batman villians. Johnny Depp is perfect for that.

As for Alice in Wonderland, i think it will be dark, creepy, and all that other good stuff that tim burton always delivers

  17. Ledger may have been a good Joker, but Cesar Romero stole the show, and nobody, but nobody, does the voice like Mark Hamill. And I’ve been a Depp fan since 21 Jump Street… just how old does that make me? lol He would make a good Riddler, though. Personally, I think Secret Window was some of the best acting he’s done. He needs to stay away from any more Pirates, but I’m looking forward to Public Enemies and the Rum Diaries.

  18. Secret Window was pretty great. (One of my favorites).

  19. @ Michael Claymore

Had a bit of a laugh when I read this:

‘I cant see Depp as either Joker or Riddler – his acting style is way too understated for such hyper maniacs’.

    Jack Sparrow is ‘understated’? LOL!

  20. jack sparrow, willy wonka, ed wood, Raoul Duke… all those characters were just crazy balls of “WOOOOO” in a person.

  21. I really want to see him back with Gilliam to reattempt The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

  22. I have been an avid Tim Burton fan for years, and also a Johnny Depp fan. I cannot wait for this movie to be released! I will go see any Tim Burton or Johnny Depp film, whether good or not! Btw, I didn’t like that review. They made the movie sound boring, which we all know it won’t be!!!

  23. Depp and Burton or Burton and Depp….One word…..LEGENDARY.
