Johnny Depp As The Riddler In The Dark Knight Sequel?

Not two days after wild rumors started circulating that Angelina Jolie was looking to play Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s third chapter of the Batman Begins series, comes an even wilder rumor from out of the UK that Warner Bros. execs have begun eying top-notch actors Johny Depp and Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman for the roles of The Riddler and The Penguin in the next Bat-flick
DON’T DRINK THE KOOL-AID JUST YET. For every new rumor of which villains will be featured in the next Batman film, comes another statement from Dark Knight scribes Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer, saying that they are trying NOT to take the obvious route of throwing the second-most iconic villains from Batman’s rogue gallery into the next film. However, as Spider-Man 3 taught us all, when a franchise reaches a certain $tature, the studio’s wishes quickly begin to trump any creative desires. Don’t be surprised to see The Riddler, The Penguin, or both, show up in the final draft of the script.
However, we won’t really know anything until a script for BB3 is actually done. But that hasn’t stopped fan debates from raging 24/7. Personally, I don’t think Goyer and Nolan should be working too hard to try to pull out obscure villains and/or plotlines for the next installment. If Heath Ledger’s performance in The Dark Knight taught us anything, it’s that an actor at the top of his or her game is able to take what is iconic and totally redefine it. (And fanboys, really, is that not the essence of all the best comic books: re-definition of the status quo?)

Hey Jay P, David Hyde Pierce would be such a CLASSIC riddler. As as i’m concerned the role is his but they would never cast him. Even though nolan is going to do his best to be true to the franchise this is still hollywood and DC trying to stay up with marvel and up the ante.
I think Pierce would be a decent choice, butI really love the idea of Neil Patrick now. I’ve been really impressed with him the last few years especially after DR. Horrible.
I agree with Daniel andJay P. i think Pierce has a lot he could bring to the table as the riddler. As for the joker Johnny Depp has my vote. If any of u guys have Sweeny Todd you will understand why, he plays a sick and twisted murderous barber that uses shaving knives, and if i recall the joker likes knives too? I dont know i just think he could really do the part.
Yes, I have seen Sweeney Todd, and that is why I would love to see Helen Bonham Carter as Harley Quinn. Wouldn’t that be great? Depp and Carter together again as Joker and Quinn. I can see it perfectly.
Although Pierce and Harris would make better Riddlers than Gosling, I just threw him in there because he would be the actor that would go out of his bubble like Ledger did and be something completely new and nail the role. I think he could pull it off, but at the same time, Harris and Pierce would deliver much more. Regardless of who plays him, I just think it’s time for the Riddler to …. “Suit Up!” (How I Met Your Mother reference)
Johnny Depp would work because of his dark odd-ballness. If they want to go for the most similar in facial appearance they could go with Anthony Michael Hall or Neil Patrick Harris. Since Batman would be on the run, I think the Riddler would able to tie in nicely with his Riddles that are set to try and expose Batman’s identity while holding Gotham in fear. The only similarities in the Joker and Riddler is that they can be comedic and deadly at the same time, but E. Nigma is a lot smarter than the Joker, and focuses more on testing Batman’s intelligence than creating chaos for amusement. Catwoman could work if the Romantic element is kept to a minimum and she is not dressed up in a full catsuit like other Catwomen (especially not halle berry’s catwoman costume). did anyone hear the rumor that Cher was to be cast as catwoman?
Sweeney Todd is another of the millions reasons I don’t want to see Depp in this film at all. He took a very well written character and performed horribly with it. I’ve seen community theater performances of Todd that were better.
I’d like to see Coleman Reese as the riddler, but not as a psychopath holding Gotham hostage, since it’s happened before. More like, the man who knows who Batman really is, and with that information, criminals have been trying to get him to squeal, and the only way for him to survive is to become the biggest mobster in gotham, then you can have Black Mask up in arms over this, since that’s the title he wants. So then Batman’s got Riddler who knows his identity, Black Mask trying to become the main player, cops trying to take him down. Now Batma’s lonely, angry and violent. His only friend is the Joker. Sure, the Riddler won’t be the same as in the comics, but if he was, then he’d be a less formidable version of the Joker, with a few campy-ass riddles. He can use riddles in making sure only Batman finds them, ensuring Batman knows that Reese knows his true identity, and that if Batman stopped these crimes (against Wayne’s company, since Reese has intimate knowledge of their companies) Reese would let the cat (or bat, HAHAHAHAHAH, hilarious!) out of the bag. Waddaya reckon?
well jhonny depp is a really good actor dont me wrong, i think is just the character, i mean the riddler, come on, its a lil childest in my opinion, i think batman needs to find a villain tats going to give him a challenge, a villain that batman isnt able to stop so easily or at all, besides im a lil tired of watching the good guy win in all the movies, i would love to see something terrible happen to batman, kinda like wat happened wth rachel dawnes( the girlfriend tat joker blew up) no one saw it coming, it was sad but yet soo kool
Will does got a point i think it will throw a little something no one expects like with the whole Rachel thing( when i saw the movie i kinda figured the joker was lying anyways lol). And SIN187UM, that Cher thing is just a rumor. And seeing Depp and Carter acting toghether again would be amazing! I think they should put the riddler in the movies too if they wanna follow their realism to the series but i really am against having catwoman in it.
Well, what about the next movies after 3? Who think that there will be more than 3 movies?
Would Catwomn fit better in the 4th installment when Batman has had a little more time to get over Rachel Dawes. The last thing we want is Selina Kyle being the rebound girl. Kyle is the one Batman has to really like, not just flirt with and feel attracted to her. There needs to be more, and I don’t think it would seem real if that relationship happened so soon after Rachel’s death.
Also, I really want to see Bane! I don’t know how many movies there will be, but whichever movie is the last one, that’s the one that has to have Bane. I want to see him break Bruce Wayne! Of course Bane would have to die and Gotham would be a healthy town again, but that would mark the end of the Batman series. Bruce would see that Gotham is better and that he did his job. He would retire for that reason and because Bane broke him.
Who would make a good Bane?
i dont know who would make a good bane but thats why i dont want catwoman yet. Either the timeline of the next movie has to be a few years after the 2nd one or they dont put her in until a 4th one or something, if they make a fourth one.
Matt Morgan would make a phenominal bane. Hes was a pro wrestler so he could definitly act and since hes not a huge movie star we dont have to worry about him needing a bunch of face time. hes 7 feet tall and weighs 320 pound of pure power. But the only thing that Nolan needs to watch out for is he cant make Bane look like a big stupid lug. Bane is suposed to be a genius, all he did for the first twenty years of his life is read and work out. Plus he needs to speak spanish.
Either Morgan needs to learn to speak apanish or mabey there has to be someone else to the part but i looked at pics of Morgan and he looks pretty good for the part
Matt Morgan would make a fine Bane and yeah, it’s true, the only thing holding him back is his ability to act like Bane. He has the looks down pat, but if he can’t act smart and sophisticated and, as Jess said, spankish, then he is useless. This idea just came to me because this actor is fantastic. Javier Bardem as Bane. He has the deep voice and can most likely produce a spanish accent and with the technology today, I am sure that they can jack him up easily. He would probably work out on his own anyway just to get bigger for this part. He is one of those dedicated actors that can do wonders.

oh I remeber him, he did collateral. He did like two dozen movies in Spanish and he grew up in the Canary islands so i think he has the spanish part down. As for buffing him out im sure they could work something out, its been done before
I looked up Javier Bardem and the only problem i see is his hieght. Christian bale is 6′ feet tall and bardem is 6’1″. If i am remembering right bane has to be at least 5 inches taller, which i believe they could fix somehow. he would be amazing and would steal the show just like ledger, i hope nolan looks here, he would have a great movie if he did.
idk about bane, seems like a good character and all, just dosent seem right bringing him to the big screen yet, n has for catwomen, she wouldnt be a rebound, the only reason why batman is all over her, is becase there both alike in many ways, the only difference is tat batman is more decipline, and has for batman retyring, tat only thing tat could stop bruce wayne from being batman is death, because batman aint the disguise, bruce is the disguise they, batman is his normal life

the only thing is if you have to pick a villain who can beat batman in a fight and we all know only bane, killer croc, and solomon grundy can do that.
well true batman does need a villain with a challenge, and well bane n killer croc r good candidates i say, its a hard choice, i mean after watching the dark knight so many times, its going to be exremely hard for the trilogy to top the sequel, i think killer roc would be better
Everyone is so obsessed with the third film topping the second one. I say as long as it’s good I don’t care if it’s better. TDK would be hard to top.
Well put Daniel. People should treat the Dark Knight like an amazing Saturday night out on the town and then treat this third installment like a Sunday morning hangover. So much happened in TDK, they will probably spend most of the B3 just focussing on Bruce and how he is going to deal with the cops. Plus, it will focus on the origin of whatever new villain there is. Pretty much, the third movie will be building up to the fourth movie.
I really like this idea for a movie! Have Bruce Wayne become obsessed with the Joker’s philosophy. I think if you remember what the Joker told Batman about how the people will treat you like a freak an outcast when they dont need you was a lead in to this next movie. Have Bruce torn to a point that he begins to obsess with the Joker’s origins because he actually starts believing what he has told him. (Bruce is mentally unstable because of losing Rachael, public hate of Batman, on the run the whole Harvey Dent situation that this 3rd movie will be like a mental struggle for Bruce Wayne/Batman) Tie the gap between Batman and The Joker via Scarecrow.
(How to explain the absence of The Joker for obvious reasons but still give him the feel of a powerful villian)…. Have Bruce go to Arkon to talk to The Joker mano e mano but Joker is under heavy lockdown because he learns Joker is wildin up the other inmates with his philosophical talk so Bruce goes to the person with the closest connection (Arkon inmate) to The Joker that being Scarecrow. Reveal that the Scarecrow was working for the Joker.. (hint in Batman Begins many times Scarecrow speaks of “his” boss is coming.) Scarecrow can then act as a believable link (like Moses to God someone that spreads The Jokers gospel) to The absent Joker but at the same time the audience can get a feel the Joker is still alive and causin “chaos”. At the same time have The Riddler aka Johnny Depp as a detective/crime solver/hired genius be on the case of finding the villian Batman. Riddler can then get Batmans identity through Scarecrow via a interrogation at Arkon. You can then tie in Penguin or Black Mask to this story also. Have Scarecrow reveal to Bruce that The Joker got his weapons/bombs/crazy gas from mayor elect or mayor hopeful Penguin. “In Dark Knight The Joker had some flashy weapons for being a nutcase bazooka’s bombs galore” Or because of Batmans low key or complete absence from the streets and because all the mobsters got wiped out have The Black Mask come to power in the mob underworld. Or read my last story on Harvey Dent I really do think all these ideas are good not just because im the one writing them but because they are!!
I think i thought of a good story, that one crime boss from the comics becomes the leader of the underworld, and gotham city. He puts a new mayor and replaces Gordan. He hires an assasin(deathstroke,deadshot,bane,preferibly bane)to kill batman, and, wait for it…Talia Al Gaul comes to gotham to avenge her father, and NO SON!!!!!!!!!!!, i dont want another superman returns…shiver.

well, actually tat wouldnt make sence, pay attention to batman begins, the scarecrow was working for ra’s al ghul dude not the joker, n it would make a lot of sence for talia al ghul, to be in the 3rd film
I dont know they will probaly have Bruce go through a mental struggle like Mike was talking about just because of all that happened to him in the third film. We all have to remeber that Bruce is Batman, but he is still only human. Everyone has their downfall and mabey this will be his. And haveing the Riddler trying to figure out his identity will just add to his stress level too. Mabey batman will finally learn his limits all too well. Mabey the Joker will find a way to communicate with Batman as well just to build up his anger.
I really hope that if they do the penguin in this movie they wont do him the same way as last time. It was a little… too different for my taste.
