Johnny Depp As The Riddler In The Dark Knight Sequel?

Not two days after wild rumors started circulating that Angelina Jolie was looking to play Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s third chapter of the Batman Begins series, comes an even wilder rumor from out of the UK that Warner Bros. execs have begun eying top-notch actors Johny Depp and Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman for the roles of The Riddler and The Penguin in the next Bat-flick
DON’T DRINK THE KOOL-AID JUST YET. For every new rumor of which villains will be featured in the next Batman film, comes another statement from Dark Knight scribes Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer, saying that they are trying NOT to take the obvious route of throwing the second-most iconic villains from Batman’s rogue gallery into the next film. However, as Spider-Man 3 taught us all, when a franchise reaches a certain $tature, the studio’s wishes quickly begin to trump any creative desires. Don’t be surprised to see The Riddler, The Penguin, or both, show up in the final draft of the script.
However, we won’t really know anything until a script for BB3 is actually done. But that hasn’t stopped fan debates from raging 24/7. Personally, I don’t think Goyer and Nolan should be working too hard to try to pull out obscure villains and/or plotlines for the next installment. If Heath Ledger’s performance in The Dark Knight taught us anything, it’s that an actor at the top of his or her game is able to take what is iconic and totally redefine it. (And fanboys, really, is that not the essence of all the best comic books: re-definition of the status quo?)

A story about talia would be super cool have flash backs to the original movie. And instead Angelina Jolie playing catwoman she would play talia. She kinda looks like she could liam neesons daughter with her germanic physique. also she could carry the movie and kick the crap out of batman. if they were to do batman though a young kid from ages 13-16 would have to play the part and a jason todd senerio where he has been living on the strrets so he could already fight. but robin would have to be introduced as dick grayson in this movie and become robin in the next
It’s a potential quagmire. If these forums represent what the movie going community thinks then to keep making “Batman” films in the Nolan way isn’t sustainable with Warner’s overall plan to integrate the hero’s better for a Justice League movie. One thing that could be done is to bring the Nolan interpretation to a close in a couple of different ways. You could do a third Nolan film and draw elements from the first two and tie up his franchise. There’s still potential in the Ra’s story line, so begin there. Take the unfinished elements from the second film, Batman is seen as a full on criminal. Then resolve them in a third act, “The Caped Crusader.” Another way is to pick a villain that both Superman and Batman could fight together. What if what happen in the first two Superman movies were portrayed as recent events in the Batman universe. The Gotham news media has suddenly stopped focusing on the Batman and is now covering these new developments, the unbelievable news that aliens from another world are now among us. A titanic battle has been fought and won by an even more outlandish character than Batman! Then you bring out a true super villain into Gotham. Batman goes toe to toe with that villain and Superman shows up wearing the black costume from “Justice Lords.” Put a couple of notable scars on Routh to signify that the battle with Zod’s crew didn’t leave Superman unscathed. Give Routh a more serious tone. He’s wondering if Batman can give him any insights on how to go about fighting the different threats to humanity. If you portray Superman as the ultimate outsider, despite his upbringing on earth then you could bridge the gap between the two characters.
I agree, As he is I cant see the penguin fitting into any of this Batman franchise. Again I said as he is.. If penguin gets a makeover like the Joker did then anything is possible.
I completely agree 100% Johnny Depp is an excellent choice as the Riddler. Not only do they have to in my opinion explain away in movie reality the reason the Joker’s gone besides obvious reasons, there going to need an extremely talented actor to at least match up to Heath Ledger’s performance to have anything close as good as a movie The Dark Knight is. I think Johnny Depp in this role would give Heath’s performance a run for its money. Depp is one hella of an actor!!! Come on look at Captain Jack Sparrow hes got even the swagger right down to the t.
Even though this sounds ridiculous I really think The Catwoman as the main villian of this next movie with the Riddler tie in would make sense. Bruce Wayne has no love interest right now so a female character has to be introduced. Bane is way too early and unknown. Outside of comic circles what % of the $445 million dollar paying audience has a clue who Bane is? They know Catwoman, Penguin Two Face Riddler Mr. Freeze yes. This franchise has become to big “sadly” to stick more to comic favored characters. Boo to the notion of Robin in my opinion. I think reinvent Robin and make Comissioner Gordon’s son into Robin. It makes sense, have Bale play a larger and larger role in his life because there both at lonely places ( Gordons to busy with his new job, Batman has no woman and trying to lay low from the main scene. Finds a friend in Gordons son. Gordon & family gets killed off by Riddler have Batman adopt the kid. kid eventually turns into Batmans apprentice, Bruce teaches him all he has learned n by the 4th movie have the kid finally take his shot at Robin.
Im not a big Batman comic fan and I know The Punisher hasnt played a major role well because hes marvel also, but I really think he can fit very easily into the next film. With all the dirty cop talk, Batman as the bad guy talk, you can have The Punisher made into the true character he should really be in Nolan’s universe. How badass would a Punisher/Batman showdown be?
Have the story go the Riddler trying to find Batman or have the Riddler investigating into The Joker’s past. Have the Catwoman as some CEO by day/Catwoman at night thing or have the Punisher come to town hunting The Joker (from the previous city he was at) or trying to find the Catwoman. All ideas. I think there alot better then an Azreal, Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Bane (lightly) at this time.
mike m. not trying to sound like a d-bag but chris nolan already said no to penguin and catwoman. you cant just recreate robin plus if you kill gordan the batman series is over, hes the good guy on the force. dick grayson would work just have his parents die infront of his eyes it doesnt have to be in the circus. phantasm would make a good villain you have a love intrest plus she can hunt batman. the consept i had for riddler was he was a forensics scientist, in fact one of the best in the world and was responsible for solving some of the most puzzling murders but batman came on ther scene and those started getting less and less untill they were goneso he decided to commit a murder that batman can’t solve. The problem is Edward cant stop killing so he murders 12 people and with each murder he leaves a clue so while batman is trying to solve the murders and catch the killer while the phantasm is trying to kill him. plus some of the best villains are less well known like phantasm, bane, clayface, killer croc, ventriliquist, azreal, anarchy, and maybe even deathstroke.

I think the Mr. Reese (mysteries) idea is golden. Coleman Reese will become the Riddler in the next movie. He will use his knowledge of who the real Batman is too his advantage and get involved with crime and get in over his head.
Batman/Bruce will bring Harvey/Two Face to his house and keep him there for a while. Harvey will break out and find out that Wayne is Batman and seek revenge on him for the whole movie. Dent will die at the end of this film.
The Joker will be sent to Arkham where Harleen Quinzel will try and “change” him. This leads to her becoming Harley Quinn and being The Joker’s assistant. They will break out of Arkham by the end of the film. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow will be in Arkham as well and will attempt to the scare The Joker with his gas, but it only makes The Joker laugh hysterically. The Joker and Harley Quinn kill Scarecrow during their escape from Arkham.
Victor Zsasz will make a bigger appearance in the next movie. He will stab Alfred, just like he does in the comics and assuming that he is dead, Zsasz will give himself a tick, like he does for every person he kills. When he finds out that Alfred didn’t die, he goes to the hospital to finish the job and fights Wayne, not Batman, Bruce Wayne. As Zsasz gets arrested without killing Alfred, which whom he already gave a tick, kills himself before the cops disarm him.
That’s movie number 3. Movie number 4 will include Coleman Reese as a full time Riddler much like Harvey Dent was a full time Two Face in movie 3. It will also include The Joker and Harley Quinn being up to no good.
Movie 4 belongs to Selina Kyle who is first interested in Bruce Wayne, but quickly becomes interested in Batman as well. When Selina asks Bruce about his commitment, Wayne turns her down, so that she doesn’t face the same fate as Rachel. Kyle then tries Batman, and of course, Batman turns her down too, for the same reason, cause they are the same guy. After Selina gets turned down by the only two people she ever liked, she hates men and goes to crime. Throughout the film, she expressess her interest in cats, but she will be dressed like Catwoman for one scene in movie 4.
One night when Batman is out tryin to catch criminals, he runs into another vigilante. His real name is Floyd Lawton but he tells Batman his name is Deadshot. This is a man who has bright and colourul attire so that people WILL shoot at him. He is not suicidal he simply has an unusual desire to die an epic death. Batman tells him to stop what he does telling Deadshot that it is not worth it, being a hero. Deadshot eventually joins the crime side as their assassin, because his accuracy is amazing.He runs into Batman at almost every crime scene throughout this film.
That’s movie number 4. Movie 5 will include The Riddler, The Joker and Harley Quinn again, along with Deadshot and Catwoman. Selina Kyle and Floyd Lawton have left their lives behind much like Coleman Reese and Harleen Quinzel and have led only one life, which is Riddler/Harley Quinn/Deadshot/Catwoman.
On a side note, from movie 3 to movie 5, Oswald Cobblepot will be playing a secondary mobster role, much like Carmine Falcone and Salvatore Maroni did in the first two movies. Unlike Falcone and Maroni, Cobblepot will last longer than one film. As for his transformation into The Penguin, it won’t as climatic as Harvey Dent’s was, into Two Face. Before Victor Zsasz became a serial killer, he had lost all of his money to Oswald at a casino. Now, Zsasz goes to a party that Cobblepot is holding and attempts to kill him. This is when Victor stabs Alfred. Victor doesn’t kill Oswald but in attempt to slit his throat, Zsasz manages instead to slice a good portion of Cobblepot’s nose. This leaves Oswald going to the hospital where he gets a nose implant of some sort. His new, longer and pointier nose, along with his change in voice, he now sounds like his nose is plugged whenever he talks, make people compare his new qualities to that of a penguin. When Cobblepot hears someone call him a penguin, he gets very upset and either has them shot or beats them to a pulp himself. As movie 3 concludes and movie 4 begins, Cobblepot fully recovers and goes back to being the newest mob power of Gotham.
Movie 5 will turn to the only new villain addition, Bane. Bane will be an inteligent man. He will also be jacked beyond belief. He finds out who Batman is, fights him once before he finds out. Batman runs away and always tries to avoid Bane. In the end, Batman finds Bane’s weakness, the pills that Bane has to take every 12 hours in order to stay alive. After Bane realizes that all of his pills were destroyed, he uses his last 12 hours of his life to destroy Batman, he meets Wayne in his house and beats him more than anyone ever has. After breaking his back in the most epic way possible, Bane’s 12 hours are up and he painfully ackes his way to death, leaving Wayne broken.
Before the amazing battle between Batman and Bane, the other villains known as Harley Quinn, The Riddler, Deadshot, The Penguin and Catwoman will each have their moments of truth before they die. Of course Batman doesn’t kill any of them. They will either get killed by another villain, kill themselves or get arrested, but probably not get arrested.
As for The Joker, he will walk up to Bruce as he lies broken after Bane dies. The Joker will talk to Batman about life and his scares only to get shot from behind by … Commissioner Gordon! That will leave the public knowing who Batman was. That will leave Bruce Wayne recovering alongside Alfred. That will leave Gotham City as a peaceful place, thanks to Batman.
Now that the story is set, who will take on these monsterous roles. Firstly, we need to realize that not all of these villains need to be celebrities. Nolan has done well with giving one character a famous actor and giving another character someone less famous.
Movie 1
Ra’s Al Guhl – Liam Neeson – famous
Scarecrow – Cillian Murphy – not so much
Movie 2
The Joker – Heath Ledger – famous
Harvey Dent – Aaron Eckhart – not so much
Of course, with all due respect for Eckhart and Murphy. It is a much better idea to choose actors this way so that the audience knows that the more “challenging” villains are the ones played by the famous people. That seems to be how Nolan is doing things. When Jim Carey and Tommy Lee Jones are two bad guys, you can’t tell which one is more of a threat and that makes them both less threatening, in my opinion. So, for movie 3, we need to find another Joker, which will be someone famous, cause Ledger was famous along with some other great actors and actresses.

Now for the new guys. All of these options for actors and actresses are based on the rumors I have heard and who I think would do a good job.

Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn – Helena Bonham Carter, Piper Perabo, Claire Danes, Kelli Garner or Christina Applegate

Movie 4
Selina Kyle/Catwoman – Kate Beckinsale, Angelina Jolie, Eva Mendes, Keira Knightley or Catherine Zeta-Jones
Floyd Lawton/Deadshot – Colin Ferrel, Doug Jones, Vincent Regan, Clive Owen or Edgar Ramirez
Movie 5

Like I said before, these are only ideas. All I am really hoping for is that Nolan makes another Batman movie. Please keep in mind that he will not try to out-perform The Dark Knight, just like whoever plays The Joker will not try and out-perform Heath Ledger. Think of this Batman series as a weekend. Friday/Saturday morning is Batman Begins. You prepare yourself for the future, you pick out certain clothes you want to wear, certain drinks you want to drink, that sort of thing. You pretty much set the mood for the weekend. Batman Begins set the mood for the rest of the movies. Saturday “knight” is Dark Knight. Absolutely awesome. Great time. Everything and everyone was perfect. Movie number 3 is Sunday morning. It is a recovery from the amazing “knight”. This third movie will be all about how Batman deals with what happened in Dark Knight. He has to deal with Harvey, the cops and more. As for movies 4 and 5, they are Monday, if it is a long weekend. This means that we don’t know if there will b a 4th and 5th. That all depends on what week of the year it is. It depends on what Nolan wants to do. He has been smart so far and will continue to make the right decisions. Whether we think they are right is our business. I just want to see Batman take to the skies again and again and again. That’s all we can hope for.
I think they should use Black Mask, he is one of the lesser know dark , gritty and edgy characters in the comics and has appeared from time to time. He also has a grudge against Bruce Wayne – Batman’s alter ego. He is a bit of a tactical mobster with a very solid build, almost tank-like. I would say Sylvester Stallone to play him , but i don’t know. I am just saying that because Black Mask has a very hoarse, assertive and aggressive Voice as told by the comics. You know, a Different villian of sorts, more of a personal battle between Bruce Wayne and Black Mask for the next batman movie.

LOL!! I really cannot think of another actor who is scary and psychopathic enough to play a vengeful mobster. The best part of Black mask is that his character can tie in pretty well with Batman Begins. I don’t know why Nolan is not making metion of considering Black Mask. I mean if he used the Joker. Plus in the comics, Black Mask hires The Riddler. And from reading the comics, in one of graphic novel the Black Mask is second in command of the escaped patients at Arkham. The Joker is in command.They could recast the Joker with Black Mask escaping from arkham ayslum.But two major villians in one movie seems like much. Black Mask is also a Billionair like Bruce Wayne, so it could sort of be a “level plain field ” battle. This guy is also a deadly torture specialist and power-greedy person, not just some random mobster, but quiet different.
But I can definetely see Black Mask working with the Riddler. The movie can play out with Edward Nygma being an investigator that is really good at solving Puzzles, and goes mentally insane when given the assignment of finding out who batman is when hired by the police dept.. While Black Mask can be the main villian Gordon and Batman are trying to apprehend.At the same time, Black Mask is trying to exact his revenge on Bruce Wayne. Riddler should not be doing any bad things for the 3rd part, this movie should just focus on the origin of the Riddler , like bits and pieces. Riddler should be the main villian for the fourth part, and work in conjunction with Harvey Dent, who is somehow alive. Dent should not be in the 3rd part, as the 3rd part is the origin of the riddler.Just a though, what do you think?
Black Mask’s motive is to rule the underworld, not rob a bank. he is not a typical mobster, but a torture specialist and criminal stragist. he’s got to get the limelight in batman 3.

But recasting the Joker is disrespectful the the wonderful performance Heath Ledger gave in TDK. Killer Croc would end up not working in the Nolan Universe, the same for Poison Ivy. A realistic villian that fits the tone of the Nolan Universe like Deadshoot or Black Mask would be appropiate. Christopher Nolan, if you are reading this, please make a third batman film, we are all counting on you.
I don’t think it would be disrespectful to Heath in anyway. I don’t think it’s the best idea but certainly not disrespectful.
I think an actor would have to be either:
A. An idiot
or
B. A newbie desperate to break into the biz
to try and follow Ledger’s performance in the same role.

The whole Johnny Depp as the Riddler thing is a myth started by the National Inquirer which lists no sources for the rumour. People are missing the point of having this character in a third film, if he’s played eccentrically (as Depp would portray him) then he would just become a watered down version of The Joker. One of the main reasons Heath was so acclaimed as the Joker was that he’d never done a role with which the character required such intensity. Depp has frequently done roles like this so it would be too obvious and unchallenging. I think the Riddler should be a behind the scenes guy who you probably don’t see until the concluding act (very siminalr to Kevin Spacey’s character in Se7en) of the film and he leaves clues as to the crimes he’s going to commit which contain all the knowledge to prevent them if decoded in time. The Riddler should come off as a more cowardly character and I think Crispin Glover could pull that off far better than Johnny Depp can.

Oh, I know, how about Kevin Costner as the riddler, Pauly Shore as the Joker, Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen as one of the wives, Jack Black as the Penguin, Paris Hilton as Catwoman and David Hasselhoff as Batman.
Whatever. Nolan is a freaking nightmare. Someone please stop him (and his brother) before he COMPLETELY ruins modern cinema.
amilla, WHAT!! Nolan is a great director and that many villains would ruin the movie, especially if they are all well known and if you don’t believe me watch spiderman 3. Now I have alot about this and thought bane and black mask. Bane is only a side villian but crucial to the story, his back story is the same as in the comics he is from south america, he is a genius, and he is big. black mask comes into the story as a millionaire playboy whos company gets shut down by wayne enterprises. He still has a bunch of money and is still respected (near mirror image of bruce wayne) but at night he is a killer out to get revenge on ol’ brucey too bad he can’t find him at night. Until he finds out his secret so black mask kills some people to get batmans attention but on the way there batman meets a new friend bane. He fight him and can’t seem to outsmart him or out manuveur him after a hard fight bane grabs batman and breaks his back. While laying on the strret a young boy of about 16 rides up on his motorcycle and lifts him on the bike and drives home, which is in an alley due to the death of his parents. bruce and (dick, jason, tim take your pick)become friend and some how within the conversation they make their way to wayne manor where alfred treats bruce. (dick,jason,tim)stays on an invitation and i haven’t actually figured out the rest.

I wonder if Nolan really has another Batman film in him? How does it meet or exceed “The Dark Knight?” He only has one other direction to go, down. He might now be thinking I’ve done the best, the he*l with the rest.
Im telling you the best thing they can do is have 2 Face come back. At the end of the Dark Knight what really do we see???? Batman leaves the scene in a hurry with 2 Face “apparantly” dead on the ground… right.. Then we get flashforwards to Dents funeral and thats it. No dead body no nothing. What I think they do is continue the next movie right where they left off. Batman takes off with all the cops on his tail. In the meantime Gordon is left with his son alone and thats when Dent gets up grabs Gordon’s son with gun in hand after just hearing Batman spill his guts about taking the fall for Dent’s actions and tells commissioner Gordon your family will be safe as long as you go along with my plan. From there on out you can do anything you want with it. If you see Gordon at Dents funeral at the end of the movie he looks very nervous or uneasy so they can pass it off as whatever they want. Have Dent as the main villian in the next movie but nothign to do with him being a bankrobber or anythign like that. Just some nutcase out for revenge. Then either introduce The Riddler or Black Mask at the same time..

I really like this idea for a movie! Have Bruce Wayne become obsessed with the Joker’s philosophy. I think if you remember what the Joker told Batman about how the people will treat you like a freak an outcast when they dont need you was a lead in to this next movie. Have Bruce torn to a point that he begins to obsess with the Joker’s origins because he actually starts believing what he has told him. (Bruce is mentally unstable because of losing Rachael, public hate of Batman, on the run the whole Harvey Dent situation that this 3rd movie will be like a mental struggle for Bruce Wayne/Batman) Tie the gap between Batman and The Joker via Scarecrow.
(How to explain the absence of The Joker for obvious reasons but still give him the feel of a powerful villian)…. Have Bruce go to Arkon to talk to The Joker mano e mano but Joker is under heavy lockdown because he learns Joker is wildin up the other inmates with his philosophical talk so Bruce goes to the person with the closest connection (Arkon inmate) to The Joker that being Scarecrow. Reveal that the Scarecrow was working for the Joker.. (hint in Batman Begins many times Scarecrow speaks of “his” boss is coming.) Scarecrow can then act as a believable link (like Moses to God someone that spreads The Jokers gospel) to The absent Joker but at the same time the audience can get a feel the Joker is still alive and causin “chaos”. At the same time have The Riddler aka Johnny Depp as a detective/crime solver/hired genius be on the case of finding the villian Batman. Riddler can then get Batmans identity through Scarecrow via a interrogation at Arkon. You can then tie in Penguin or Black Mask to this story also. Have Scarecrow reveal to Bruce that The Joker got his weapons/bombs/crazy gas from mayor elect or mayor hopeful Penguin. “In Dark Knight The Joker had some flashy weapons for being a nutcase bazooka’s bombs galore” Or because of Batmans low key or complete absence from the streets and because all the mobsters got wiped out have The Black Mask come to power in the mob underworld. Or read my last story on Harvey Dent I really do think all these ideas are good not just because im the one writing them but because they are!!

Mike, Harvey is DEAD. You can download the script of The Dark Knight online. In one of the last few pages, Nolan has specifically labeled the character DEAD in the last scene. Also, if Harvey was alive, it would have undone the sacrifice that Batman has made. (It’s really old news).

Lastly. I don’t mind that they recast the Joker. We might see a brief cameo of the character in the third installment–of course, its too too too early to tell. Many believe “oh, heath made the character his own!” or “it would be disrespectful to ledger!” as a deterrence to recast the Joker.
But..come on. The only reason why we give a rats nuts about ledger was because he played the Joker so well. We cared nothing for him before. I’m sure some of us smirked at the idea of “the actor in the gay cowboy movie” playing the Joker. Now that we see his performance was good, we’re over zealously turned off by the idea of another actor taking a crack at the Joker.
Don’t be an ass. If you really respect ledger’s work, let the Joker live on….that’s all we cared about in the first place.
