Iron Man 3 not only represents the second most successful comic book film of all-time at the worldwide box office, sitting behind only its Marvel predecessor in The Avengers, but it represented (at the time) the last film on star Robert Downey Jr.’s contract. RDJ, who banked huge off of The Avengers and Iron Man 3 with a percentage of the box office gross, was a no-brainer, must-sign for Disney and Marvel Studios and they did just that, much to the pleasure of moviegoers around the world.

Robert Downey Jr. is the current poster boy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, their undeniably most bankable actor, so Marvel worked out a deal to have him return for both The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3. While there’s no doubt interest in an Iron Man 4 and there will absolutely be Avengers films after this contract runs out, RDJ’s version of Tony Stark may not be there. So how do you replace the most bankable star of the franchise and the most interesting personality? Call up Johnny Depp.

Latino-Review has the scoop on another unannounced casting by Marvel Studios, an actor they described leading up to sharing the news as being A-list and “in a different stratosphere’ than Oscar winner Michael Douglas. Who is that high profile, and for what role? Johnny Depp is reportedly meeting with Marvel to discuss the potential of him becoming Doctor Strange.

It’s the type of casting that fans dream of in fantasy polls and speculation, and it actually fits quite well. In fact, the source claims that it’s the fan speculation that made the meeting happen, much like it did in putting Marvel and Vin Diesel in a room together. We had heard about the possibility of Doctor Strange filling in the void left by Robert Downey Jr.’s scene-stealing Tony Stark before, and Johnny Depp is the closest thing you can get to Robert Downey Jr. on screen. Not to mention, Depp’s part of the Disney family and earns similar epic paychecks from them for his Pirates of the Caribbean films to what Downey Jr. gets for his Marvel appearances.

Can you picture Depp appearing on stage at Comic-Con this summer when Marvel Studios unveils their Phase 3 films taking up their already-claimed 2016-17 release dates? Feige practically confirmed already that Doctor Strange will join Ant-Man has a new property in Phase 3.

Last year’s The Lone Ranger may have flopped financially, but Depp has helped Disney earn billions with Pirates and Alice in Wonderland (both franchises with sequels coming starring Depp). He’s a go-to guy for Mickey Mouse and a comic book fan himself. Disney can build an entire scheduled of billion dollar blockbusters around Depp. I’m sure some executive is wondering how they can work schedules to fit him into Star Wars

And that brings us to a legitimate question. Doctor Strange is either being planned as a summer 2016 or summer 2017 release. Disney delayed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales to July 2016 and Alice in Wonderland 2 is scheduled two months earlier in May 2016. That would mean that Strange would need to be a 2017 release for Depp to be available for a full production.

Assuming any of this is true, and factoring in the fact that Kevin Feige flat out told us it’s going to be sequel followed by new property each year going forward, our Phase 3 release slate may look something like this:

  • Ant-Man (July 2015)
  • Thor 3 (May 2016)
  • The Inhumans/Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (July 2016)
  • Captain America 3 (May 2017)
  • Doctor Strange (July 2017)
  • The Avengers 3 (May 2018)

Remember, Marvel already has a rough idea of what they’re doing up until 2021, so barring any box office fails, they’re following a plan. Where Depp may have been too big of an A-lister back in the day when Marvel put faith in lesser knowns to build stars out of them, they’re now living in a world where competition is fierce, competition that is embracing the model they created.

Just look at the latest rumors from Warner Bros and DC Entertainment which have namedropped the likes of Oscar winners Joaquin Phoenix and Denzel Washington, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson also potentially joining in the fun for a Justice League film which may shoot alongside Batman vs. Superman starring Ben Affleck. We won’t even get into the most expensive superhero movie of all-time in X-Men: Days of Future Past already having a sequel in the works for 2016, one that will share the same cinematic space as the rebooted Fantastic Four (2015).

No wonder every single day brings crazy superhero casting news. Excited? Is this believable? Must Marvel go this big to introduce new, lesser known characters? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments!

  1. I know I’m tardy to the party but I hate this idea. I can not stand his characters.

    • I’m with you Kyle I just don’t want to see a drunk Dr. Strange running around with his hands in the air. Johnny Depp has become a major bore lately becoming very complacent in his 1 dimensional characters he has been playing lately. Johnny Depp can perform a lot better than that I just don’t know what’s wrong with him lately.

  2. After all the success they’ve enjoyed, it would be a shame to see Marvel get gimmicky with their casting. Nothing against Depp, but nothing in support of him either; they need a genuine performer and not a spectacle.

  3. This would be damn near perfect casting if it happens. Imagine a Tim Burton directed Doctor Strange with Depp in a Steve Ditko inspired universe….

Yeah, that would be the $#!+.

    • That sounds like a disaster to me Johnny Depp and Tim Burton have lost their touch, sorry.

  4. Disney own Depp, Disney own Marvel, makes sense, will look forward to seeing Depp in Star Wars and every other thing for the next 20 years!

  5. I’d love to see James Franco take up the mantle of Iron Man when RDJ’s contract ends.

  6. Casting Johnny Depp would be a stupid move. Look his past few films; Dark Shadows, The Rum Diaries, Rango, The Lone Ranger- all of which were various degrees of disappointments at the box office. Audiences are generally over Depp and quite frankly this doesn’t seem like inspired casting to me. Someone like Hugh Laurie would make a much better Doctor Strange.

  7. Why not Viggo Mortensen?

  8. Great news… Johnny Depp is as close as it gets to Doctor Strange. Just watch 7th gate and you’ll see plenty of Stephen Strange on Depp as Dean Corso. If it was up to me it would be either him or Hugh Jackman (so people wouldn’t tie him so much to Wolverine and he would migrate to marvel, but I think this ship has sailed).

Anyway, I’m looking forward to Doctor Strange.

  9. I don’t like this idea at all

  10. Daniel Day Lewis would be awesome as Dr. Strange, but If Depp gets it then I won’t be disappointed.

    • That I’d love to see.

  12. Everyone is wrong. Idris Elba should be Dr. Strange. I win good-bye.

    *mic drop*

    • BOOM! Ya that just happen

  13. Personaly I think this is a very bad idea. His characters may look diffrent but unfortunately they have the same personality. If you want a good actor that can mold into roles the best. My pick for doctor strange would be Gary Oldman. He even looks the part.

    • That’s cheating. Gary Oldman can play anyone or anything (and already has). Good suggestion though. And I agree about Depp.

  14. Don’t like the idea of Depp. Too much of the go-to “oddball.” People are challenged to name even one role where Depp isn’t under a lot of costume and make-up, or at least loudly playing some eccentric character.

Sam Raimi is, IMO, the only choice to direct. If he did it I’d even be fine with James Franco as Strange. John Hawkes would be an interesting choice too.

    • Blow
      Rum dairies
      A nightmare on elm street
      Ed wood
      Fear n loathing…
That’s more then one I think.

      • Public Enemies
        Finding Neverland
        The Libertine
        Sleepy Hollow
        Ninth Gate
        Transcendence (upcoming)

        • Donnie Brasco!

  15. Hmmm. It could work. Or they could go in the direction of Thor, and get a complete unknown. I have no preference beyond their finding the best person for the job.

But certain casting can make a difference. While I am willing to trust Marvel and check out Ant-Man, I wasn’t ‘excited’ until I heard Paul Rudd was involved, and now with the Douglas casting as Pym, it’s really shaping up. Really giving us an idea of what we might get.

For better or worse, Johnny Depp would evoke those kinds preconceptions. BUT the man has been known to do great things for characters when he’s invested. If Marvel/Disney can engage him artistically, I’ve no doubt we’d get something special.

  16. Maybe they can get Kiera Knightley to play Clea and Rush to play the Baron.

  17. Depp is too expensive and too high in demand to be able to meet all the marvel requirements. I’d prefer Liam Neeson as Strange.

Jokes on us though because the economy would probably collapse before any of these films ever made to big screen.

  18. Hahaha, Johnny Depp is the worst decision ever.

    *five minutes of thinking later*

Actually, now that I think about it, that might be pretty cool. Still vote for Liam Neeson though.

  19. I like Depp and I have seen him act “normal” in a lot of movies and he still comes across as strange which is why I think he would do the character justice.

HOWEVER, that being said, I agree that people might associate his other “weird” roles. I would rather a different actor who may be less expensive but up and coming. Will still be happy with Depp though.

    My picks would be
Jim Caviezel (Count of monte cristo and Person of Interest)
David Guintoli (plays Nick the Grimm in Grimm)
Silas Weir Mitchell (plays Monroe in Grimm)

Other Great ideas i’ve also heard are
    Gary Oldman
    Daniel Day Lewis

  20. Willy Wonka as Doctor Strange? I say cast Depp if Gene Wilder plays the Ancient One.

  21. So Paul Rudd for Ant Man is better casting than Johnny Depp as Dr. Strange!? C’mon people, stop getting butt-hurt and think.
Though I wouldn’t have chose Depp for Strange if I was a casting director, and I kinda feel like he’ll pass on this, Depp has incredible range and gravitas and stellar body language making him actually perfect for this type of charecter. And what he does best is give producers and directors EXACTLY what they want. Meaning he’s a charecter actor who’s celebrity might have just gotten too big.
Burton loves him because Depp can accurately act out his vision. That doesn’t mean he can only play weird characters.
So, if they write Dr. Strange to his strengths and not just write him like Depp’s past charecters, he can pull it off. Like 2-parts Donnie Brasco 1-part Capt Jack.
And as long it’s not promoted as “Johnny Depp in…. Dr. Strange” this could work.

  22. Jim Caviezel would actually make an awesome Stephen Strange. The role needs to be played a little disturbed. I mean can you imagine the nightmares a Sorcerer Supreme has!?

  23. I actually think Depp could pull off a really good take on Dr. Strange. Just my opinion, though. He’s done a variety of roles, and Dr. Strange could be right up his alley.

  24. Its honestly pretty simple. If Depp actually acts he will be fantastic as Strange. His looks are perfect and his older films show he has the perfect range for the part. But, if he goes all Jack the Pirate on the role…it will be awful. Hope that movie Transcendence is a comeback movie for Depp.

  25. Good news.I think Depp is universal actor.

  26. I like Depp for the role, but also like Caviezel(wish he’d been cast as Batman). More than anything though I’d like to see Luke Evans(FF6, The Crow) as Strange.

  27. some people can`t see past Jack Sparrow i don`t get it…you are putting him in the same category as Arnold Schwarzenegger…he has more then 1 gear people
