Iron Man 3 not only represents the second most successful comic book film of all-time at the worldwide box office, sitting behind only its Marvel predecessor in The Avengers, but it represented (at the time) the last film on star Robert Downey Jr.’s contract. RDJ, who banked huge off of The Avengers and Iron Man 3 with a percentage of the box office gross, was a no-brainer, must-sign for Disney and Marvel Studios and they did just that, much to the pleasure of moviegoers around the world.

Robert Downey Jr. is the current poster boy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, their undeniably most bankable actor, so Marvel worked out a deal to have him return for both The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3. While there’s no doubt interest in an Iron Man 4 and there will absolutely be Avengers films after this contract runs out, RDJ’s version of Tony Stark may not be there. So how do you replace the most bankable star of the franchise and the most interesting personality? Call up Johnny Depp.

Latino-Review has the scoop on another unannounced casting by Marvel Studios, an actor they described leading up to sharing the news as being A-list and “in a different stratosphere’ than Oscar winner Michael Douglas. Who is that high profile, and for what role? Johnny Depp is reportedly meeting with Marvel to discuss the potential of him becoming Doctor Strange.

It’s the type of casting that fans dream of in fantasy polls and speculation, and it actually fits quite well. In fact, the source claims that it’s the fan speculation that made the meeting happen, much like it did in putting Marvel and Vin Diesel in a room together. We had heard about the possibility of Doctor Strange filling in the void left by Robert Downey Jr.’s scene-stealing Tony Stark before, and Johnny Depp is the closest thing you can get to Robert Downey Jr. on screen. Not to mention, Depp’s part of the Disney family and earns similar epic paychecks from them for his Pirates of the Caribbean films to what Downey Jr. gets for his Marvel appearances.

Johnny Depp in The Rum Diary Johnny Depp Meeting With Marvel For Doctor Strange

Can you picture Depp appearing on stage at Comic-Con this summer when Marvel Studios unveils their Phase 3 films taking up their already-claimed 2016-17 release dates? Feige practically confirmed already that Doctor Strange will join Ant-Man has a new property in Phase 3.

Last year’s The Lone Ranger may have flopped financially, but Depp has helped Disney earn billions with Pirates and Alice in Wonderland (both franchises with sequels coming starring Depp). He’s a go-to guy for Mickey Mouse and a comic book fan himself. Disney can build an entire scheduled of billion dollar blockbusters around Depp. I’m sure some executive is wondering how they can work schedules to fit him into Star Wars

And that brings us to a legitimate question. Doctor Strange is either being planned as a summer 2016 or summer 2017 release. Disney delayed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales to July 2016 and Alice in Wonderland 2 is scheduled two months earlier in May 2016. That would mean that Strange would need to be a 2017 release for Depp to be available for a full production.

Top 10 Facts About Marvel’s Doctor Strange Johnny Depp Meeting With Marvel For Doctor Strange

Assuming any of this is true, and factoring in the fact that Kevin Feige flat out told us it’s going to be sequel followed by new property each year going forward, our Phase 3 release slate may look something like this:

  • Ant-Man (July 2015)
  • Thor 3 (May 2016)
  • The Inhumans/Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (July 2016)
  • Captain America 3 (May 2017)
  • Doctor Strange (July 2017)
  • The Avengers 3 (May 2018)

Remember, Marvel already has a rough idea of what they’re doing up until 2021, so barring any box office fails, they’re following a plan. Where Depp may have been too big of an A-lister back in the day when Marvel put faith in lesser knowns to build stars out of them, they’re now living in a world where competition is fierce, competition that is embracing the model they created.

Just look at the latest rumors from Warner Bros and DC Entertainment which have namedropped the likes of Oscar winners Joaquin Phoenix and Denzel Washington, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson also potentially joining in the fun for a Justice League film which may shoot alongside Batman vs. Superman starring Ben Affleck. We won’t even get into the most expensive superhero movie of all-time in X-Men: Days of Future Past already having a sequel in the works for 2016, one that will share the same cinematic space as the rebooted Fantastic Four (2015).

No wonder every single day brings crazy superhero casting news. Excited? Is this believable? Must Marvel go this big to introduce new, lesser known characters? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments!

  1. If this ends up being true, it’ll make casting Ben Affleck as Batman looks like, well, casting Ben Affleck as Batman…

  2. As the Sorcerer Supreme, no I can’t go for that, no, no can do. Too much Depp over the years, I’m kinda over him and this doesn’t raise my enthusiasm level for Doctor Strange. I’d be seeing Tonto or Capt Jack up there from all the past hyped projects of varying talent success.

  3. Dear god nooooooo! Depp is a jackass. Look how he destroyed The Lone Ranger! I mean its The Lone Ranger! And he ruined it. Marvel, stick with the talented “unknowns”. Don’t mess with a winning formula. All these so called A listers are just trying to hitch their wagons to superhero movies because its making money. I mean Michael Douglas as Ant Man? Guys like Depp want in because their popularity is fading. I want to see a lesser known talent bring Dr. Strange to life. Johnny Depp will play Johnny Depp dressed like Dr. Strange and he will over shadow anyone else in an ensemble cast (Avengers3-4-5). And one last thing; replace Iron Man with Dr. Strange?????? Sounds like a poor choice

    • Yes it’s the lone ranger a character that has been relevant in decades. A movie no one asked for and then the studio is surprised no one knows who that character is.

I Think you might just not like Johnny deep. He is a good actor and I could see him as Dr strange. Also Dr strange as the main star could work. He’s not over exposed or well known to the casual audience, just like Iron man was. Could work in Marvel’s favor again.

    • Interesting because I thought he wasn’t the director nor the writer of the movie! How did he ruin a movie he only acted in? Sorry to brust your bubble but Depp is still on of the most popular actors and the biggest stars on the planet and that’s not changing anytime soon.

Johnny Depp will play Johnny Depp dressed like Dr. Strange? You are trying to make it sound like that but can’t the same be said for all other actors? Depp never plays Depp and his acting style is always different in his movies and his real persona is a far cry from the personas of the characters he plays.

      • ^ Exactly. You can’t say that as boldly about Downy Jr.

    • you know; I had went here thinking to myself that I might like to see him play a part. I might even say I was excited. but after reading your comment I thought back to how I felt watching the last movie he was in and how I just kinda see him playing himself and not being able to play the character. You have in fact changed my mind. Let someone talented and unknown take a shot. this way I will feel more like I am seeing the character and less like I am watching my annoying rich uncle playing a character.

    • You don’t much about the movie business do you?

  4. Let’s just hope his version of Strange isn’t all Johnny Depp-ed out. (Meaning practically being Jack Sparrow in a superhero outfit)

  5. I think Depp would make as good a Stephen Strange as RDJ does Tony Stark. If this is true it’d bring a ton of non comic fans to see the movie, especially females.

  6. I would L0OOOOOOOOOVEEEE to see Depp as the Strange!!!! Will be Awesome…

  7. The thought of Doctor Strange replacing Iron Man as Marvel’s leading franchise is a touch odd, given that it’s a relatively obscure title with a “difficult” lead character. Then again, Iron Man wasn’t exactly the most popular or widely-known book either before they made movies out of it; more proof of the power of good adaptations.

  8. Worst rumour I have ever heard……

  9. JD sucks he is not fit for the serious doctor strange . It will be a repetition of RR/GL . It just doesn’t work

    • That’s funny because he is playing a serious role in his very upcoming movie!

      • Yousef you comment every website that mentions Depp. Are you Amber Heard or something? Or his agent? I come to look for things to post on my fanpage since he has gone down to a lot of fans after he started dating a woman who looks like his daughter and he is old enough to be her father. But really find a job and stop playing with the chickens.

  10. I hope the next news will be “Tim Burton Meeting with Marvel For Doctor Strange”.

    • That idea does not sound all that bad when you think about it. I’d rather see Sam Raimi being considered….but if they lured Tim Burton I’d be okay with it.

      • Wasn’t serious bout it and it’s supposed to be a joke. But if he ever goes back and able to pull of something as good as Ed Wood or Big Fish again, then go right again Mr Burton.

        • But for the twist, Dr. Strange is actually Helena Bonham Carter.

          • She looks more like Dormammu if you ask me.

  11. This makes sense for Depp – but I don’t really want jack sparrow as doctor strange
But given that pirates seems to be getting worse and has 1 (last?) movie coming out and Lone Ranger tanked it could keep Depp in the Disney fold
It is hard to not picture him just doing his jack sparrow-esque thing again though which I am tired of seeing

  12. Viggo is the only choice, after the earlier rumours- think there is more Fan support for a sinister/ rough darker DR. Strange than bubbly dark Depp.

    • You’re either really young, watch very few movies, or have a pretty bad memory. Depp has done plenty of dark, serious roles.

    • Sweeney Todd, Glen Lantz, Edward D. Wood, Jr., Raoul Duke, Edward Scissorhands, John Dillinger, Sheldon Sands.

      Those roles aren’t so bubbly.

      • Plus the upcoming Transcendence looks AMAZINGLY AWESOMELY GOOD! As long as they dont make DS a funny guy role and actually stick the serious, Im all for JD to play Doctor Strange(DS). This could mean even more possibility of Adam Warlock.

  13. I love how everyone is bashing on marvel nowadays. Like it or not they’re one of the most successful brands today. Every film they put out will easily make millions. I personally really enjoyed iron man 3 and Thor: the dark world. I thought marvel would’ve chosen Rudds ant man to take over Downey jr.s role but dr strange makes sense. I think marvel is headed in te right direction and if they choose Depp as Strange I have no doubt he’ll do a fantastic job bringing the character to life. It seems like people have avatar syndrome and are hating just for the same of hating.

  14. Arguments in favour of Depp:
    * Excellent Actor
    * Star potential (can carry a solo movie)
    * Good fit for role

    Arguments against Depp:
    * strongly identified with other characters
    * no ensemble on his wages
    * his casting would increase the pressure on the movie

Strange has one of the better origins stories and I was hoping that MCU would deliver that story as a strong PG-13 or even R-rated film (I keep waiting for them to tackle some of their properties a bit more seriously). I sense Depp would place this squarely in PG or PG-13 territory. I suppose all I can hope for is that MCU can get a director with the right sensibilities (i.e. Jackson, Del Toro, Cuaron)

  15. i preffer a black panther movie. and inhuman yeah!!. but well another new movie its ok

  16. I have a feeling you’re right about the The Avengers 3 being on May 2018. I HOPE you’re right. Because May 2018 is 10 years after the Marvel Cinematic Universe started with ‘Iron Man’. That would be pretty cool.

But unlesss Guardians of the Galaxy is a MAJOR success, I doubt it will have a sequel IN PHASE 3, because Marvel is probably going to do some other property they have.

  17. People care about Doctor Strange?

  18. This could actually keep me from seeing the movie. I’m so tired of Johnny. And if Burton joins it, I’m out.

  19. No. Just no. The man is everywhere and that’s already too much.

  20. another unconfirmed casting rumor about a movie years away. It’s like watching political pundits talk about nothing but 2016. Irrelevant and probably not going to happen. Getting sick of your S*** screenrant

  21. Luke Evans as Dr. Strange! Luke Evans como el Dr. Extraño! Luke Evans jako Dr Strange! ლუკა Evans როგორც დოქტორი უცნაური,닥터 스트레인지로 루크 에반스! לוק אוונס כד”ר מוזר! डॉ. अजीब के रूप में ल्यूक इवांस! Lucas Evans bilang Dr Kakaibang! Luke Evans kiel Dr Strange!

  22. A 70 year old Antman, now this!!!! If its true I wont be seeing this movie either.

  23. I support this.

  24. Patrick Dempsey as Dr. Strange!!

  25. I’m not the biggest fan of Dr. Strange, but the best casting choice for the character, imo, is Tom Mison from Sleepy Hollow.Dempsey just from his teenage sounding voice alone is a no go for me.

Johnny Depp just doesn’t seem like the right fit for the character, imo.

  26. I do not want jack sparrow as strange.

    No deal.

  27. Honestly I’m not quite sure we even need another magical character since Scarlet Witch\Thor will kinda fill that void. I do not like Johnny Depp anymore either. It’s upsetting because yes he is a talented actor but when someone is catapulted into spotlight over and over and over again it gets a little old! I really think Oscar Issacs should portray Dr Strange. He’s still considered an unknown and has a quirkiness/Darkness about him as well.

  28. They just need to call Karl Urban already ;)

  29. Personally, I think Marvel and DC are trying to outdo themselves and each other with A-list actors. In my view, that’s not the way to go and is not a sure ticket to a blockbuster success. If their memory hasn’t failed them, they’d recall that Clooney and Schwarzenegger ruined the Batman franchise and inadvertently killed any zeal for superhero movies for quite awhile until an unknown Tobey Maguire showed up as Spider-Man. Not that Clooney and Arnie were that lousy- they lacked direction. What happens is an over-reliance on the talents of these A-list actors to carry a movie thus making the scriptwriter/director abit laid back. Consequently, the A-list actor plays himself in the movie. This works well if the character being portrayed fits the actor’s personality (e.g. RDJ as Stark) but fails woefully if there’s a contrast in personality e.g. Clooney as Batman (and IMO RDJ as Sherlock Holmes). It also fails woefully if the character’s personality is not well defined or as strong as the personality portraying him e.g Ryan Rynolds as Hal Jordan. If however the focus is on a brilliant story knowing fully well that your characters are popular enough to pull a crowd (eg JL) then there’s no need to flood the movie with A-list actors struggling for screen time. Avengers only had RDJ and SLJ…and it worked. Well, films like Ant-Man and GotG might need such support.

In the case of Johnny Depp as Dr. Strange I see a clash of personalities. Not necessarily because Depp’s character can’t blend with Strange’s perfectly- anyone who’s seen him as Donnie Brasco and Jack Sparrow will attest to his range. He also has a knack for the dark side which is a plus. However, the article proposes him as a replacement for RDJ’s Stark which suggests to me a more loquacious, witty Depp (Sparrow-esque) as against a sobre, less verbose Depp for the part. That is my worry. I’d have preferred an older actor for Strange but if Depp is it..he shouldn’t be a crowd-pleaser like RDJ but a more sombre figure that befits the role.
