Iron Man 3 not only represents the second most successful comic book film of all-time at the worldwide box office, sitting behind only its Marvel predecessor in The Avengers, but it represented (at the time) the last film on star Robert Downey Jr.’s contract. RDJ, who banked huge off of The Avengers and Iron Man 3 with a percentage of the box office gross, was a no-brainer, must-sign for Disney and Marvel Studios and they did just that, much to the pleasure of moviegoers around the world.

Robert Downey Jr. is the current poster boy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, their undeniably most bankable actor, so Marvel worked out a deal to have him return for both The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3. While there’s no doubt interest in an Iron Man 4 and there will absolutely be Avengers films after this contract runs out, RDJ’s version of Tony Stark may not be there. So how do you replace the most bankable star of the franchise and the most interesting personality? Call up Johnny Depp.

Latino-Review has the scoop on another unannounced casting by Marvel Studios, an actor they described leading up to sharing the news as being A-list and “in a different stratosphere’ than Oscar winner Michael Douglas. Who is that high profile, and for what role? Johnny Depp is reportedly meeting with Marvel to discuss the potential of him becoming Doctor Strange.

It’s the type of casting that fans dream of in fantasy polls and speculation, and it actually fits quite well. In fact, the source claims that it’s the fan speculation that made the meeting happen, much like it did in putting Marvel and Vin Diesel in a room together. We had heard about the possibility of Doctor Strange filling in the void left by Robert Downey Jr.’s scene-stealing Tony Stark before, and Johnny Depp is the closest thing you can get to Robert Downey Jr. on screen. Not to mention, Depp’s part of the Disney family and earns similar epic paychecks from them for his Pirates of the Caribbean films to what Downey Jr. gets for his Marvel appearances.

Can you picture Depp appearing on stage at Comic-Con this summer when Marvel Studios unveils their Phase 3 films taking up their already-claimed 2016-17 release dates? Feige practically confirmed already that Doctor Strange will join Ant-Man has a new property in Phase 3.

Last year’s The Lone Ranger may have flopped financially, but Depp has helped Disney earn billions with Pirates and Alice in Wonderland (both franchises with sequels coming starring Depp). He’s a go-to guy for Mickey Mouse and a comic book fan himself. Disney can build an entire scheduled of billion dollar blockbusters around Depp. I’m sure some executive is wondering how they can work schedules to fit him into Star Wars

And that brings us to a legitimate question. Doctor Strange is either being planned as a summer 2016 or summer 2017 release. Disney delayed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales to July 2016 and Alice in Wonderland 2 is scheduled two months earlier in May 2016. That would mean that Strange would need to be a 2017 release for Depp to be available for a full production.

Top 10 Facts About Marvel’s Doctor Strange Johnny Depp Meeting With Marvel For Doctor Strange

Assuming any of this is true, and factoring in the fact that Kevin Feige flat out told us it’s going to be sequel followed by new property each year going forward, our Phase 3 release slate may look something like this:

  • Ant-Man (July 2015)
  • Thor 3 (May 2016)
  • The Inhumans/Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (July 2016)
  • Captain America 3 (May 2017)
  • Doctor Strange (July 2017)
  • The Avengers 3 (May 2018)

Remember, Marvel already has a rough idea of what they’re doing up until 2021, so barring any box office fails, they’re following a plan. Where Depp may have been too big of an A-lister back in the day when Marvel put faith in lesser knowns to build stars out of them, they’re now living in a world where competition is fierce, competition that is embracing the model they created.

Just look at the latest rumors from Warner Bros and DC Entertainment which have namedropped the likes of Oscar winners Joaquin Phoenix and Denzel Washington, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson also potentially joining in the fun for a Justice League film which may shoot alongside Batman vs. Superman starring Ben Affleck. We won’t even get into the most expensive superhero movie of all-time in X-Men: Days of Future Past already having a sequel in the works for 2016, one that will share the same cinematic space as the rebooted Fantastic Four (2015).

No wonder every single day brings crazy superhero casting news. Excited? Is this believable? Must Marvel go this big to introduce new, lesser known characters? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments!

  1. Typecast… Makes sense.

    • I don’t remember him being cast in a role like this before! A comic book character in a Marvel movie, he’s never done that.

      • Nor can I remember Johnny Depp being cast as a magician either. It would be interesting to say the least.

  2. And the internet explosion of excitement and 2nd guessing begins in 5….4….3…..2…..

  3. Perfect Choice.

    • Far better choice than overexposed Depp.

    • I’ve wanted him for the Dr. all along, but they won’t cast someone who LOOKS the part (besides RDJ as TS) He looks like the Dr., but can he act/does he have the comedy chops to pull off Dr./is he bankable..?

      • Have you watched Game of Thrones? He can act.

Why would Doctor Strange need to be someone comedic? His origin is not funny, nor is he. At least not anytime I have seen him portrayed. He isn’t Spiderman.

      • “does he have the comedy chops to pull off Dr.”

Comedy chops would not be required to play Doctor Strange, not even remotely. Marvel films have some humor in them, it doesn’t mean Doctor Strange suddenly would be comedic.

    • ioan gruffudd anybody?

    • I agree. This Game of Thrones Star can act; and definitely has the look of Dr. Strange.

  4. He would be PERFECT for the role. Depp would help immensely in marketing Strange to the masses.

  5. Patiently waiting for all the I don’t believe El Mayimbe posts.

I’m not surprised about this, and I don’t know much about Strange so I guess I’m for it. For all the crap Depp gets for some reason, he’s still a great actor.

  6. I don’t believe this for a second. Lets say the May 6th, 2016 date or July 8th dates are Doctor Strange, there is a process that has to happen still.

Feige will hire a director before they go after Depp, there are no two cents about it. The director always gets his choice in the MCU.

There is no way that Disney would allow production on Pirates to be stalled (Or Allison in Wonderland) in order for Depp to be Strange.

    • 2017, friend. It would have to be.

And that would mean 2016 is Thor 3 and [The Inhumans?]

      • He’s not your friend buddy!!

        • He’s not my buddy, guy!

          • I’m not your guy, pal!!

            • C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!

      • Inhumans is likely Phase 4.

        2016- Thor 3/ GOTG 2
        2017- Doctor Strange/ Cap 3
        2018-Avengers: Infinity/ Inhumans

        • I think The Inhumans could be the Guardians sequel. That’s the “merging of brands” Vin Diesel let slip before.

Makes sense. Their origins (the Kree) and them having an Infinity Stone could be what brings Guardians to Earth. But yes, that could be Phase 4

          • I still think Diesel is Thanos and Marvel has just been feeding fake press.

You may have a point on the Inhumans/GOTG merging, only hesitation is determining a villian (I have been struggling to think who the GOTG2 bad guy would be).

Lets say what you hypothesize is correct:

            Space- Possession of Loki
            Power-Possession of The Collector
            Mind- Loki’s Scepter with Fury
            that would likely mean

Inhumans have the Soul gem or Reality Gem

Maybe the GOTG respond to an astral projection from a member of the Inhumans team needing help.

And the Reality Gem probably the arc reactor at Stark Industries

            • Reality Gem = Scarlet Witch. All you need to explain her powers.

            • How is the Reality Stone an Arc Reactor? Odin says the Infinity Stones predate the universe itself… the Arc Reactor is like 30 years old.

Also, the Tesserect is either Mind or Space, it seems unlikely to be both. The scepter seemed to use the Tesserect’s power as mentioned on several occasions throughout the Avengers and is therefore probably not a separate Infinity Stone, just a tool to use the power of the Tesserect.

            • Loki’s scepter is powered by the tesseract. It doesn’t contain the Mind stone.

  7. I doubt this casting is anything solid. anything with the words “has meet with the studio” is already a debunked rumored. I don’t see this beng true in any sense. I’d rather Collin Farrel over Depp as Strange anyday (just for sheets and ggigles).

I dub this as being debunked until an offficial casting announcement comes. Latino-Review has always been sketchy with their casting announcements. They hit or miss. but 99% of the time they’re misses.

    • I don’t know about this 99% claim of yours… In my experience it’s more like 50/50. I truthfully don’t believe EM doesn’t make these things up out of thin air. He believes them to be true, and half the time it seems as though he’s right.

  8. To be honest I wanted (and still) want Benedict Cumberbatch to play Doctor Strange, but casting Johnny Depp would make sense since he has more name recognition. I’ll be happy as long as the film turns out good, which I’m sure it will.

    • RDJ wasn’t as big as he is now when he took Iron Man. Depp is just too big for me and too obvious.

      • It’s disney they can afford anything.

        My questions are

        1. Why is it being obvious a bad thing if it’s still a good idea?

        2. Was phase 1 the only phase that was going to have six films?

        • the phases werent a thing until after the Avengers. It started off as only IM and Hulk, than IM2 released alone 2 years later. The 2 per year didnt start until Thor.

  9. Can they afford both him and downey, plus everyone else?

    • I assume Strange is pretty far off. Heck, he won’t come until after the likes of Rocket Raccoon and Ant-Man. I expect we won’t get anything solid for Strange until after at least those two drop. I wouldn’t be surprised if Strange comes the same year as The Black Panther.

I assume a large part of the Marvel Movie-Verse revolves around an eventual Avengers team-up/team-shift and Strange and Panther are what I would consider prime Avengers Auxiliary members.

This has me thinking that with as much money as these films make/will make Disney and the time between certain projects, by the time they have an actual casting for Doctor Strange (whether that be Depp or not,) RDJ will likely be out of the picture, or at least on his way out.

    • Disney bought Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars, so maybe not

  10. That would be awesome!

  11. While it would be awesome, I kind of doubt it. Both Depp’s renown and his age might have already killed it.

He’s an obvious, very fan-popular and oft-rumored choice, and when has Marvel ever followed up by actually casting those names?

I can’t fathom who might be the lucky upcoming new Dr. Strange, but I would be 99% sure that it isn’t Depp.

Idk much about Dr. Strange so I’m not exactly a fan, but still, yes. My fanboy cynicism is hanging out and waving unabashedly in the breeze.

    • Doctor Strange is in his 50s, Johnny Depp is 50. Works fine.

  12. I thought Patrick Dempsey was the #1 contender, hmmmmmmm

  13. He would cost too much. End of story.

Besides, there are better choices than Johnny Depp. If Marvel wanted to overpay an established actor to play Doctor Strange then my preference would be Adrian Brody. He would be far more convincing as the Sorcerer Supreme than Depp.

    • “He would cost too much. End of story.”

      No such thing with disney.

      • Aside from RDJ, the majority of the cast did not see much until re-negotiations. Marvel/Disney has been trying to keep the actors from overwhelming the budgets of their movies, well established fact.

      • I’ve read before Marvel does it’s own thing and Feige’s boss is really tight pursed it’s somewhere in the archive of RDJ’s whole contract argument and the actors rallying to him. I don’t think Disney is shelling the cash for these movies…

        • I have a feeling Avengers & IM3 has completely changed this. All those penny pinching rumors were before the massive income generated by those movies.

  14. Off topic, do you think Matt Smith would take the role if offered?

  15. Viggo ain’t good enough?

    • Also a solid and MUCH better choice than Depp.

    • I’d love that!

    • Anything with Viggo!

  16. Good choice! Love to see mature actors playing these characters. Again, Dark World sucked!

    • Dark World was fine, not the best, but enjoyable. Would not say that it sucked.

    • Malekith was a weak spot, but the rest of the characters and cast was solid, while Hemsworth and Hiddleston brought their awesome A+ game as ever as Thor and Loki.

It was pretty far away from “sucked”. Malekith just suffered from being so much less interesting than Loki.

      • Honestly when I saw Thor 2 the second time it all became a lot clearer to me. The movie was solely to keep Loki relevant in terms of plot, bring Thor back to earth, and officially introduce the infinity gems. Everything else was just there to fill the gaps which is why I think the plot suffered in some ways. Putting Loki next to Malekith was just an awful idea because the weakness of Male just showed way too much in Loki’s presence. Loki is a Shakespearean type of villain while Malekith just seems like a power rangers bad guy and his plot wasn’t much better either.

        • dark world was much better then iron man 3

  17. Sooo cool. Totally workable.

Such a long time away to care about now..

    • Phase 3 is actually not that far away. In regards to the 2016 movies, we should expect rumors on directors coming very soon.

It is usually 26 months before a Marvel film that a director gets announced. CATWS may be the exception as there is less CGI prep work.

  18. And the news/rumors just keep going down hill.

I like Depp and think he’s an awesome, quirky actor but NOT for the Sorcerer Supreme. Dr. Strange needs to have a commanding stage presence and a resounding and forceful voice to pull off his lines believably, neither of which Depp has.

If Depp had wanted to do supernatural he should have convinced them to do it in The Lone Ranger as was originally rumored.

Liam Neeson is still the first best choice.

    • Marvel doesn’t have the Ba’als to cast him.

      • I see what you did there. I watched SG1 also ;)

and he would also be a better choice for Strange

  19. Depp may have the look for an Adam Warlock/Infinity/Glamora-Drax-GotG angle.

    • I hope they will consider Bradley Cooper for Adam Warlock instead haha

  20. Can’t they get like, an actor, for the role? Johnny Depp has been playing a caricature of himself for the past 10 years or more.

    • Interesting, is that why he’s been nominated for the Oscar 3 times in the last 10 years? Have you even seen like half of the movies he’s done in the last 10 years? Have you seen Finding Neverland, Secret Window, The Libertine, Sweeney Todd, Public Enemies, The Rum Diary?

    • Don’t just look at Pirates of the Caribbeans or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (or even Alice in Wonderland).

Secret Window still gives me the chills. Oh and how lovely he was in “Chocolate” as well. Or yeah, flippin’ Sweeney Todd.

He has the range, lately he just played slightly similar pseudo-crazy fun characters. Doesn’t mean he can’t pull off anything else. He’s Johnny Depp, he got where he is for a reason.

      • There were so many hilarious/great moments in Rum Diary as well

        • Your tongue is like an accusatory giblet.

  21. Depp, really this guy hasn’t given an interesting performance in decades, meh!

    • He always gives interesting performances. Even in movies like The Lone Ranger.

  22. Johnny Dipp is not good material for Dr. Strange.
In fact, after the lousy flick that was a sick send-up of Dark Shadows, besmirching that great series name forever, JD can go dress up like Edward Scissorhands and scratch himself!

Im f*ching tired of Depp. Just doing the same humor over and over again.
    The MCU doesn´t need him.

  25. PLEASE Marvel, please don’t get Tim Burton to direct it. PLEASE.

    • There’s nothing wrong with Tim Burton, should he be considered. I doubt Burton would do it – but give Burton some credit – two Batmab films, Sleepy Hollow and Big Fish.

I’d prefer other directors, but Burton would not be a bad choice.

    • Are you sure you’ve seen Public Enemies, Sweeney Todd, Finding Neverland, The Libertine, Blow, Donnie Brasco, From Hell, Chocolat, Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, etc ,etc??? Because Depp was pretty serious in all of these movies and he would be perfect for the role.

      • No, most of these guys commenting obviously only ever saw Pirates of the Caribbean and the Chocolate Factory.

        Depp can’t be serious… pfff!

        • I would have to agree. It seems many have forgotten about From Hell and…

          Y’know what?
          See The Ninth Gate
