Just stumbled on this discussion… For a mature male in the lead of the Ranger I do believe that Mortensen is a good choice as opposed to Di Caprio or some other parallel to Depp given the fact that the degrees of separation are notable. That having been said… I personally have an entirely different take on the situation.

This legendary story and seed production is going to lead to a life long career for some young person if they are placed in a plotline which introduces them as someone that the mentor Tonto decides to offer his guidance and temperance to as a process of building character into the Ranger which we have never seen up to this point.

Just to take it a step further, I would love to offer the suggestion that both the Ranger and Tonto need significant motivation in this film which can really best be served by a strong lead antagonist. General Custer comes to mind when you consider the timeline of when the Rangers were founded and recognized as the ‘long arm of the law’ that reached up from Texas to calm all that Post Civil War Lawlessness down.

I see this as a great opportunity to employ the masses of folks in the midwest who need some work as well. I think Depp is an appropriate choice and, yes, his role in The Brave entirely qualifies this casting.

My personal take on the film is that it needs a younger ranger who is willing to take on a lot of personal appearances and really learn to ride as well as sign on for a ride with the franchise over time. This is purely an American thing that could yield some positive social access in times when racial tensions are mounting and faith in just ‘doing the right thing’ is being clouded by knowing what the truth is … This movie could reach into the heart of Americans and teach about the trail as well as hint at how the Federal Reserve System has lead us down a path to the company store while also explaining the injustices of Buffalo Soldiers who faught in every war….

Will they choose to do it??? Who knows… but I am a believer in options.

I am relieved to hear that they are going to do one more Pirates…I was so angry at the ending of the ‘At Worlds End’, that Captain Jack was once again without his ‘Pearl’. All I am going to say about the Pirates movies is this..Do this one as the last one and wrap up the loose ends (i.e. CJ and the Pearl, Will & Elizabeth, and Calypso and the Dutchman).
In regards to Depp playing Tonto, I believe that to be a good choice. After seening Depp in ‘the Brave’, I know he will bring his best as always. I will be estatic if they cast Viggo as the Lone Ranger. I have been wanting Mortensen and Depp to work together for a long time. If the two of them have not met before, it would sure be a meeting I would give the world to see. I believe these two fringe actors have many similarities of views.

Although I love Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean seems to be dragging on for too long in my opinion. I am no longer excited to see any of those movies. I will, however, end up watching it at some point…which is more than I can say for Spiderman 4.

As for the ‘Lone Ranger’, my choice for lead would be Brad Pitt … he would make one good-looking cowboy

Oh, and Rob, what is this ‘new direction’ that Pirates is taking?

Well, at first the thought of a studio wanting to make Johnny Depp the side-kick felt silly if they wanted to make much money; however, I think the Loneranger crowd ( older males ) might like seeing him take his place as a side character to a more masculine protagonist.

That said–as mentioned in another topic ( I think the Riddler rumour ) that Depp brings a certain amount of femininity to his roles begs Village People jokes about his playing of Tonto.

Final notes: Whoever they get to play The Lone Ranger should just go ahead and play Captain America aswell if it is a success– and can anyone else picture Depp saying “Kemosabe” without laughing?

Really Glad he’s back as Jack Sparrow!!! And really pleased that he’s going to be working with Burton again, all good news all over! (for me anyway)
