We’re now less than a month out from the theatrical release of Keanu Reeves’ new R-rated action flick John Wick. Distributor Lionsgate released the final trailer for the film earlier today, and it promises one hell of a wild ride. Check it out in full above.
For those who haven’t been following the project’s development, John Wick stars Reeves as the titular character, a retired badass hitman who is quite happy just living life in seclusion with his reliable car and his lovable dog. That is until John rubs the hothead son of a crime boss the wrong way during a chance encounter. Goons are then sent to beat up Wick, steal his car, and murder his beloved pet – who was a gift from his late wife.
Of course, the underworld kingpin’s misguided offspring probably thought that would be the end of things. Unfortunately for him, he had no idea what kind of man he was screwing with. It isn’t too long before the sleeping dragon that is John Wick wakes up and embarks on a bloody path of rage to both avenge his loss and take out his enemies.
The above final trailer basically serves as a much faster-paced, condensed summary of the previous trailers, presenting the story and action sequences in as high octane a manner as possible. In that sense, it does a great job, pretty much telling you everything necessary to understand and enjoy the film.
Reeves looks to be in top form here, proving that he is a much better actor (in certain types of roles) than he is ever given credit for. His stoic style and piercing eyes really work well for a character like this, as his performance makes it clear that John Wick is a man who has seen some serious stuff in his career as an assassin.
It doesn’t necessarily appear that Wick is much of a martial artist, but it wouldn’t be very surprising to see Keanu work some intense hand-to-hand combat scenes into the film as well. After all, the man’s love for cinematic kung fu is well-known.
Of course, the onscreen success of John Wick will not rely entirely on Reeves, as the supporting cast is packed with notable names as well, including Willem Dafoe, Jason Isaacs, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo, Dean Winters, Lance Reddick, Adrianne Palicki, Bridget Moynahan, Michael Nyqvist, and Game of Thrones‘ Alfie Allen. Whew, that’s a lot of people. Former pro wrestler Kevin Nash is also appearing in the film, hopefully reprising his hilarious role from The Punisher, but probably not.
John Wick hits theaters on October 24th, 2014.
