Next February sees the release of John Wick: Chapter Two, a sequel to the sleeper hit John Wick, starring Keanu Reeves as a recently widowed assassin who comes out of retirement to avenge his murdered dog. As silly as that premise might sound, it made for a killer action flick, bringing out the best in Reeves. Not much is known about the sequel so far, but we do know that John will be getting back in action again to take down more deadly killers in Rome.
The time until John Wick returns to the big screen is fast, approaching and thanks to the upcoming Lionsgate panel at New York Comic-Con, audiences are finally going to have a change to get their first look at the hotly anticipated sequel. In the meantime, Lionsgate has released the first official poster for John Wick: Chapter Two.
Whatever action is coming John’s way, it does not look like it will be affecting his dashing looks and dapper dress sense. As can be seen in the poster, John is not only back, he is literally being fitted for more gun fights.
John Wick: Chapter Two will once again be directed by Chad Stahelski and written by Derek Kolstad. Stahelski, along with his producing partner and co-director on the first film, David Leitch, served as stunt coordinators for years. Their filmography includes work on The Matrix films, which starred Reeves. The bond between these guys led to a well-assembled film that was given its share of critical praise and a worldwide gross of $86 million, matched against a $20 million budget. Obviously that is not a ton of money compared to the giant blockbusters hitting during the summer, but John Wick had something else going for it – the film was fresh.
While the film played off plenty of action/revenge movie tropes, there was plenty of fun to find in seeing Reeves back in action as well as the new universe created in the first film. This poster does not do much to hint at what is to come, but there is something evocative about seeing bearded Reeves getting suited up by a tailor, while holding a gun. It is a simple teaser for the upcoming film, but effective in what it is presenting.
Audiences will just have to hope there is plenty of great action to come in this sequel, without feeling a follow-up is just stretching a familiar idea too thin. Thankfully there were hints at an intriguing universe that John lives in, so it should not be too much of an issue. For a small-scale film that came out of nowhere, the buzz was strong enough to turn a would-be cult film into the start of an action-packed franchise. Hopefully it pays off.
John Wick: Chapter Two arrives in theaters February 10, 2017.
