John Wick: Chapter 4 director Chad Stahelski reveals that the upcoming movie will see Keanu Reeves' character facing the consequences of his actions. After the critical and commercial success of the third film in 2019, Reeves' titular assassin is set to return once more in next year's fourth installment, facing his biggest challenges yet. John Wick: Chapter 4 features the return of characters like Ian McShane's Winston and Laurence Fishburne's Bowery King, but also introduces a host of new ones, including Donnie Yen's Caine, Bill Skarsgård's Marquis, Hiroyuki Sanada's Shimazu, and Rina Sawayama's Akira, among others.

The first John Wick: Chapter 4 trailer has already teased some of the action that is to come for Reeves' assassin, but Stahelski now reveals more story details for the upcoming film in an interview with Total Film (via GamesRadar). According to the director, Wick will come to face some significant realizations in the movie while dealing with the consequences of his past actions. Check out Stahelski's full comment below:

"In John Wick 4, I would say, John comes to terms with how what he does affects people that he cares about. There’s always got to be consequences for your actions. And in this, we're starting to see that John understands what the consequences are. Not that it curbs him in any way."

How John Wick 3 Sets Up Chapter 4

The most recent installment in Stahelski’s action franchise sees Wick on the run after being declared "excommunicado," which sets him firmly in the sights of hundreds of assassins around the globe. After defeating everything that the High Table throws at him, the John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum ending sees Winston, Wick's constant ally throughout the franchise, betray him. Wick is shot and knocked off a building, landing in an alley below. While it seems for a moment like Reeves' character is dead, the final moments of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum feature him having been brought to the Bowery King, injured but ready to get revenge.

With Wick on a war path in John Wick: Chapter 4, the character will seemingly have to face off against assassins from his past. Yen's Caine appears to be one of these, with the new character apparently working for the Marquis, an important figure on the High Table. Caine and Wick are shown fighting in the recent John Wick: Chapter 4 trailer but a number of other new characters could also turn on him, potentially due to experiences in the past when he was a working assassin.

A number of questions remain regarding the consequences that Wick will face in John Wick: Chapter 4, but these repercussions are almost certainly connected in some way to the new characters, several of which Wick is confirmed to have a history with. After being allies for three previous films, it will also be interesting to see Wick and Winston on opposite sides of a conflict, especially since McShane's character wields quite a lot of power as the Manager of the New York Continental Hotel. With its release date just over three months away, it likely won't be too long before more information is revealed about John Wick: Chapter 4, potentially including a new trailer.
