John Wick: Chapter 2 sees Keanu Reeves as the one-man killing machine once again going up against a whole army of heavily-armed bad guys. This time around, Wick is called out of retirement when a former associate plots to take over an assassins’ guild (Wick just can’t get a chance to kick back and relax). As several clips from the movie have already shown, the action gets appropriately extravagant as Wick fulfills his blood oath to protect the guild.
Not only does John Wick: Chapter 2 bring the title anti-hero back to the screen, the movie also features a long-anticipated reunion between Reeves and one of his most famous co-stars. Ever since we learned that Laurence Fishburne had been added to the cast of John Wick: Chapter 2, we’ve been looking forward to seeing him and Reeves back together for the first time since they made cinematic history in The Matrix Trilogy.
John Wick: Chapter 2 doesn’t hit theaters until February 10th, 2017 but we don’t have to wait that long to see Neo and Morpheus reunited on-screen. In a newly-released clip via Warner Bros. UK, Reeves’ John Wick and Fishburne’s The Bowery King share a moment of chilly confrontation that ends with The Bowery King making a very important choice. After making this choice, The Bowery King figures John Wick owes him, but Wick warns him “You don’t want me owing you.”
In The Matrix, Morpheus (Fishburne) famously gave Neo (Reeves) a choice between the blue pill and the red pill. John Wick: Chapter 2 cleverly plays off this scene by having Wick offer The Bowery King a similar choice. “So I guess you have a choice. Do you want a war? Or do you just want to give me a gun?” The Bowery King makes the wise choice to avert war by giving Wick a gun.
Reeves’ icy-calm menace as Wick is on display in his scene with Fishburne, and Fishburne shows that he too still possesses the authority and presence that made him so memorable as Morpheus. Seeing those two actors on-screen again can’t help but make a person nostalgic for the late ’90s when The Matrix was everything and Reeves and Fishburne were the height of cool. Both actors have come a long way since then, but they still work together marvelously as the clip shows.
All indications are that John Wick: Chapter 2 will deliver more of the same over-the-top mayhem and Hong Kong-style action that helped make the first John Wick movie a surprise hit. Maybe the third John Wick will be the slow-moving, contemplative one where Wick finally gets to mix himself a drink, sit back and read a book with his dog slumbering peacefully at his feet. But don’t bet on it.
