John Boyega trends on social media after making an impassioned speech at a Black Lives Matter protest in London, despite fear of backlash from those in Hollywood. Boyega's breakout role came in 2011's Attack the Blockbut it wasn't until 2015 that he became a household name. Boyega played stormtrooper-turned-rebel Finn in Disney's Star Wars sequel trilogy, with his most recent appearance being last year's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It was also his last, as Boyega has said he likely won't be back in future Star Wars projects. In recent years, Boyega has also starred in films like Detroit and Pacific Rim Uprising

Last week, an unarmed black man named George Floyd died after being restrained and pinned to the ground by a white police officer. His death, as well as several others of a similar nature, has sparked massive Black Lives Matter protests across the United States, many of which have continued into this week. In addition to the protests, numerous celebrities have spoken out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. For example, Boyega's The Rise of Skywalker director JJ Abrams and his production company Bad Robot pledged to donate $10 million to various anti-racist organizations over the next five years. Truthfully, though, that's just scratching the surface of what has occurred over the past few days.

The protests have since spread across the globe, and Boyega participated in one in London on Wednesday. Standing in front of a growing crowd, Boyega gave a passionate, emotional speech about the importance of black lives and the recent tragedies that have affected the black community. "We are a physical representation of our support for George Floyd," he said. "We are a physical representation of our support for Sandra Bland. We are a physical representation of our support for Trayvon Martin. We are a physical representation of our support for Stephen Lawrence, for Mark Duggan." In a moment of startling honesty, he added, "Look, I don't know if I'm gonna have a career after this, but f*** that." You can see his full speech (via Evening Standard), as well as some reactions from social media, in the space below.

Just last week, a few days after Floyd's death, Boyega took to social media to denounce racism and those who spread it, which shockingly earned him some backlash. Boyega stood firm, however, and his speech in London is a culmination of what many have been feeling in the past week. Boyega isn't the only one to let his emotions free either. In a segment on The Late Late Show with James Cordon, Reggie Watts broke down in tears over the current situation, which seems to be escalating every day.

Boyega has never been one to hide his true feelings about something, as evidenced by his response to a certain group of Star Wars fans. Seeing him take a stand on a crucial matter like this isn't surprising, but it is very powerful. Boyega is another example of a celebrity using his platform to speak out, and while he acknowledged that it could affect his career, he did not back down. There's no saying if this actually will impact Boyega's career, but those on social media certainly appreciated his words and support.
