Joe Quesada tweeted some updates a few hours ago for the Marvel Studios moviegoers out there about next summer’s Iron Man 2 and the relatively-quiet-in-development The First Avenger: Captain America.
On Iron Man 2, he says he’s seen a rough cut of the film and is in love with it, praising director Jon Favreau for his masterful work. This is not dissimilar to his high regard for Thor director Kenneth Branagh, whom he says he could listen to talk and act out scenes of Thor for hours on end. As for Captain America, he says they recently had a very good script meeting.
Here are Quesada’s messages:
“Back in LA and just saw a rough cut of Iron Man 2. I worship before the alter of the mighty Favreau, he is da man!”
“Did I forget to mention an AMAZING Cap script meeting? Actually I did. I work here and these movies can’t come out fast enough for me.”
Everything is sounding great for the fans of Iron Man 2 but on the other hand, Quesada would never talk negatively about a Marvel Studios flick before it comes out. I, however, have confidence that it will be awesome.
As for Captain America, which is set to debut two months after Thor in the summer of 2011, the Cap team seems to be further behind in the development process than Branagh’s team, which already has the script, sets and casting complete and is set to start shooting Thor next month with rehearsals beginning this week.
We still haven’t heard who’s playing Steve Rogers (Cap’s alter-ego) and surprisingly there hasn’t been a series of rumors of potential candidates like we saw with Thor, leading up to the official announcement of Chris Hemsworth. Last we heard on the Cap casting front was from Quesada in October, whern he revealed only that they have a “wish list” of names of actors who they are seeking for the role.
I am excited and curious about what’s happening with Captain America and I hope it is not further delayed as that could mean another delay for The Avengers.
If you missed it, there’s a possibility we could be seeing the official trailer release for Iron Man 2 next week alongside Avatar and if not, the week after attached to Sherlock Holmes.
Stay tuned for more Marvel movie news at Screen Rant.
Iron Man 2 opens May 7, 2010, Thor opens May 20, 2011, The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

While true he probably wouldn’t say anything negative about Cap but if he didn’t think it was going to be good wouldn’t he have just said nothing?
Can’t wait for Ironman 2!!!!
Captain America, being a generally dull hero, has the potential to be an amzingly interesting movie. I’m glad Marvel are finally taking some chances with their franchises.
I hope the movie rocks but I know everything this guy says has no relevance. I wish he would just stop talking.
Joe Johnston just finished up The Wolfman so they seem to be way behind on Cap. I’m betting it gets delayed.
Capt. America will probably be delayed until Xmas 2011, or even may 2012. Sam Worthington would be a good Cap, he has a commanding presence, even up against Christian Bale.
Aaron Eckhart Is the only choice for Cap!
Despite the lack of news on Captain America, I doubt it will be delayed. It should be a more traditional shoot than Thor with much of it being a war movie (as long as they still go that route). Plus there should be fewer elaborate special effects to do afterward in comparison to Thor. I am not saying in anyway this will be simple or easy, but if they can get started shooting by April or so, i would think they should be fine. Obviously for this to happen they need to get people in place soon, but i don’t think they are in delayed mode just yet.
cant wait for cap AMERICA allways my favorite one. i hope its more ironman style than superman style though.
I want Capt. America to be good. But its such a hard sell. The suit is iconic, yet hard to pull off on screen. In the comics, the tunic is made out of chain mail. Don’t know if that’ll work. Then, too, who has the gravitas to be Cap? All the previous guys who tried it were all upstaged by the suit.
Iron-Man 2 will be a hit, because Favreau and Downey really get the characters. Like Snipes in Blade, Downey has made the character much cooler than the comicbook. In Iron-man, you almost hated to see him change into the armor. I doubt if that’ll be the case with Cap…
@ The Pitt Man,
I agree about Worthington and think he’s more likable – viewers can connect with him better.
That being said, I don’t think he’s right for Cap.
I’m very interested in finding out if they’re going with a big-name like with Norton in Hulk, or going with a newbie or someone down-and-out like Hemsworth and RDJ.
Mojo
I loved RDJ in Iron Man but when he changed into the armor those were some of my favorite parts. So maybe I don’t know what you mean.
Whoever is Cap, they are going to have to command a presence on film. In Avengers they will be sharing the screen with RDJ, Hemsworth & Norton (hopefully). I don’t think a “noobie” will have those credentials. I wouldn’t mind seeing Chris Pine get a shot.
I hope I am wrong, but I wonder if Marvel is thinking that now they’re going to do one major movie a year and push Cap back to 2012 and Avengers to 2013. If they have to do that to do the movies RIGHT, then do it. I’d rather them make 3 fantastic movies than 3 good movies.
I’ve said it before and still say it. I’ve got the feeling that we’ll start hearing some Cap’s casting announcements/calls in late January-early February, once Joe Johnston is done with The Wolfman. The script looks to be already established, so hopefully all the casting decisions can be made leading up to shooting by June-July.
@ink CHRIS PINE is perfect i never thought of him, he has acting chops in my opinion and a great sceen presence.
@INK & KanTstandYa…
Y’know … casting Chris Pine as Cap would be interesting. He did such an excellent job as Jim Kirk in Star Trek, he’s definitely got screen presence, and he could share the screen comfortably with RDJ, Hemsworth & Norton (hope that’ll happen).
I like that.
I know, they should get Tom Cruise…
…
…
LOL, just kidding!
Man, I can’t freakin wait for the Iron Man 2 trailer, anyone else just itching all over for it???
And The Avengers better not get delayed until the end of the world on Dec 21, 2012. I won’t care about the world ending as long as I get to see The Avengers, lol.
(I don’t actually believe in that, just joking around, haha.)
Oh, and anyone else think that Kurt Russell would have been the most awesome Nick Fury??? I’ve always imagined him playing him, but I guess the eye patch would be too much like one of his most famous roles Snake Pliskin, lol.
there is only one man capable of playing Cap:
CARROT TOP!!
no, really.. think about it..
Chris Pine? Seriously? meh. Sorry Capt America is first and foremost the Soldiers Soldier. Chris Pine does not come close to fitting that bill.
Sam Worthington not only has the chiseled chin but is “big” enough without being to big. Now can he “carry” it? Can he be what we know Cap to be?
meh I think he can.
I still say Aaron Eckhart. Sam Worthington cant be in everything!
Yeah I was thinking that too about Sam. Hell though if you have the cow may as well milk it.
Aaron Eckhart… ooo dont get me started. His Harvey Dent/Two Face was off the charts. Then they went and did what they did.
As for him as Cap…. He has the look, and pounds could be put on. However will he be able to carry the character for 2-3 movies AND the Avengers? I would think you would need someone a little younger.
I take what you mean, but I think the character could do with being slightly older than the rest of those in the Avengers, I really cant quantify what Cap should be like and what actor should take the part, it is a massive part, and probably one of the most essential to the Avengers Movie.
Also, I like Eckhart as Harvey Dent but not as Two Face, the duality of the character wasnt there as it should have been, and his motivations were all over the place. But the was the fault of the writers not the actor.
Iron Man 2 should be amazing, I hope they havent gone down the dark path with the story, and from what I have heard they havent. The first Iron Man struck the perfect balance, great actors, great directing, and damn it was good fun without feeling the need to be moody and dark. It goes to show that Superhero movies can be fun, instead of being too serious.
Captain America could fall flat on its face, but Marvel are starting to experiment and take chances with the formula, shame they cannot extend that to XMEN and SpiderMan franchises.
@ Ken J
Russell would have made an awesome Fury..so would Clint Eastwood 20-25 years ago..
Did anyone see Bottle Shock? I thought Pine was really good in that film and think he has the charisma and swagger to pull off Captain AMerica..
I don’t think Pine is big enough (tall enough or muscular enough, at least right now) to be Cap. Cap has to be a beast imo.
Just read this and not sure if it’s legit or not.
It was recently reported that “Chuck” star Zachary Levi was up for the role of Fandral in “Thor,” but had to turn it down due a scheduling conflict.
“That was a bummer. There’s no way to slice it,” he said. “To be able to not only be up for a really big movie, but to be up for a really big movie that is a part of the Marvel Universe, that Kenneth Branagh is directing, that Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins are in, you dream about stuff like that. It sucked having to let that go, but again, that stuff is out of your hands. I’m sure Stuart Townsend will do a good job.”
And now he wants to do Captain America supposedly.
Speaking of “Thor”, the only actor that i want to see repeat a “Marvel” character is Idris Elba. Idris Elba will be playing Heimdall but he is the perfect actor to play as the one and only Luke Cage. He has the look down, the acting chops and an incredibly convincing New York accent. I would love to see a “Heroes for Hire” movie, screen-play written by Shane Black(Lethal Weapon) and directed by Ridley Scott(American Gangster)!!!
Kurt Russel as Nick Fury would be awesome and I think Aaron Eckheart could do captain america some justice. I heard a while back that Dicaprio was rumored to play him. I’m sure that got shot down a while ago but that could be interesting if he buffed up sorta like in Blood Diamond..
Bottom line…
Cap is the Man. Cant think of any one who can pull off Cap. tough casting call
