Want to know how long it takes to make some movies happen? Cloverfield, the “shaky cam” movie about an attack on New York City by a giant monster, hit theaters back in January 2008. Before that month was out, Cloverfield 2 had been green lit by Paramount studios. Flash forward 2 years later, and the only news we’ve heard from producer J.J. Abrams is “Yup, we’re working on it [sic].”

You know, for a film that brought in $170 million worldwide on a budget of just $25 million, I would think Paramount and Abrams would be chomping at the bit to get Cloverfield 2 out in theaters, ASAP. Of course, the fact that Abrams is also working on a sequel to last summer’s sci-fi hit Star Trek, producing the hit show Fringe, is putting together material for Mission Impossible 4 and has a secret 500 Rads project all in the works, could possibly mean the guy just doesn’t have the time to properly focus on Cloverfield 2.

Does the world NEED a Cloverfield 2? Probably not, but that hasn’t stopped Hollywood from giving audiences a sequel before. I’m just wondering why they are dragging their feet so much on this one. Could it be that they haven’t really done anything about it yet and are just dropping the “Check is in the mail” routine on interviewers? Perhaps Abrams and company really want to make a decent sequel and therefore haven’t rushed the creative process.  Here’s what Abrams said about Cloverfield 2 during a recent red carpet interview with MTV:

“We’re working on something right now with that and again, you know, it’s [in the] early stages.”

Oh that clears things up; thanks J.J. Here’s what I think he means by “working on something right now”:

[Abrams talking to director Matt Reeves at Starbucks]

Abrams: “Hey we should talk about some ideas for Cloverfield two.”

Reeves: “Yeah you’re right. We should totally talk about some ideas for Cloverfield  two.”

[end scene]

That’s pretty much the extent of the thought that has been given to this movie so far, but like always, Screen Rant will keep you up-to-date with any new information.

Now for some interesting Star Trek 2 news; there has been plenty of speculation for who or what should be the main source of villainy in Star Trek 2. Klingons, Romulans, and Kahn have all been kicked around as possible antagonists to our beloved Captain Kirk and Enterprise crew. Now Abrams is throwing out one more possibility – The Gorn (see pic below). Here’s what he said to MTV:

“I have to admit the ['Star Trek' sequel] is really all about the Gorn. We just thought it would be fun… to go Gorn.”

OK, so Abrams was obviously talking in a tongue-in-cheek way about making the Gorn the Star Trek 2 villains but I’m actually thinking, “Why not?” If you aren’t familiar with the Gorn, let me give you some quick background: The Gorn are a race of reptilian humanoids. They are slow moving, hiss a lot but are quite lethal and are known to be very cunning. Kirk battled a Gorn captain in the Star Trek episode “Arena” and barely escaped with his life.

With the writing talent of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman combined with the directing prowess of J.J. Abrams, I think the Gorn as an enemy could hold up pretty well. If anything, they could be made into secondary villains that become main villains in Star Trek 3.

BONUS: Check out a classic Kirk vs. Gorn clip!

What do you guys think about the Cloverfield 2 news and using The Gorn as bad guys in Star Trek 2?

Clovefield 2 has no release date and Star Trek 2 sets its phaser to stun on June 29th, 2012.

  1. All I can hear while watching that clip is…

“Hit him in the soft spots!!”
“HE'S A ROCK HE DOESN'T HAVE ANY SOFT SPOTS!”

    :D

    • Is this a countdown for Cloverfield 2? tenten2010.co.uk ?
Someone on Facebook sent me the link and it’s the only thing I can think it is. Anyone know anything more?

    • Nice Galaxy Quest reference. I thought I was the only one to have watched that Tim Allen movie. Good Times!!

  2. I would like to see a Cloverfield 2 movie. If they are taking their time because they don't want to rush the creative process, I say, take all the time you need. I liked Cloverfield 1, and its ending did a whole lot more than simply suggest that there has to be a Cloverfield 2. This movie should be exciting. I do like that shaky/moving camera element, as it adds a sense of realism to the movie.

  3. Gotta admit, hadn't though of the Gorn for ST2. But yeah! Why not?! One the best things the reboot series could do is explore some of the lesser traveled roads of the original series; like the Gorn (or the Tholians, or Andorians).

I agree with Paul Young in that the Gorn would be better served as a secondary villain in ST2 with a larger role in ST3.

But YEAH! Bring on the GORN!!!

  4. I'm kinda prejudiced about using the gorn in Star Trek 2. “Arena” is one of my favorite episodes from the original series and they'll probably make a lot of changes… understandable, but I like that villain just the way it is (:

  5. Secondary villain, unless Gorn can talk?

  6. Look around you, can you build a rudimentary lathe…?

    • Get off the phone Guy!

  7. Are you kidding me? They both have lightsabers on their belts, why didn't they just use those to fight?

  8. boy, the jj/gorn article is not only a week old from trekmovie, but here is what was really said
Summer 2012: Go Gorn (OK not really)

On the Star Trek sequel Abrams said:

We have some ideas about that, but it is in very early stages, so it is not something we can point to that villain from episode fill in the blank, and say “it’s that guy”

Then MTV’s Reporter Josh Horowitz suggested “it is a Gorn, isn’t it?”, to which Abrams (joked)

I have to admit it, the movie is all about Gorns. We just thought it would be fun to Go Gorn!

    JJ later suggested:

I can’t believe you didn’t go for ‘Children of the Gorn’.”

And is this really even worth reporting? its the same as saying nothing was said. i dont quite call this reporting a story. i call this the equivalent to: Guy A: What's up?
    Guy B: Nuttin much.

Guy A runs off to the press and says “Guy B might be lying about nuttin much being up”!!

  9. We're an editorial news site, not a straight up news site. So we like to post things that drum up conversation from time to time, even if they're not “hard” news.

  10. LMAO!!!! You werent kidding about the Gorn being slow moving. That fight had me almost in tears. Gotta love the classics.

“Barely Escapes with his Life” lol

  11. man star trek 2 looks terribly boring if the climactic fight ends up like this…

  12. If you read it, it was worth reporting :-)

    Always love giving that response.

  13. Secondary Villain?….Klingons of course

  14. “Then what is his real motivation?”

    I so love Galaxy Quest!

  15. I still fail to understand why no one involved in the Trek franchise has thought about having the Breen in the movie. The only time you see them (well, them in their atmosphere suit) was in DS9. Maybe they could have both Gorn and Breen as secondary characters.

  16. NO GORN in S.T. 2 having him in it would trash the sequel put gorn in cloverfield 2 and have the monster step on him

  17. I personaly don't want the Star Trek sequels to go this route. It was obvious that was the intent with the whole “creating an alternate time line” plot but it shows a serious lack of imagination to me.
There is the whole Universe and all it's weirdness to get new ideas from not rehash classic episodes. Thinking caps on people!
That said, being an uber Star Trek geek, I know I'll still go and see this, however it pans out.

  18. Rough weekend (started late Thurs) and I come in to see this for a chuckle. Thanks guys!

  21. William Shatner's hairpiece as killer tribbles

  22. i really love to see a second movie of cloverfield

  23. Nero was amazing!
Put Gerard Butler as Khan and there you go! A beastly movie!

  24. Meh, I personally like the fact that they’re taking their time. <3

  25. I think the borg should be the villains in the next movie, it could continue from the Enterprise episode Regeneration, maybe have the Gorn in it as an ally this time, would be nice to see them get a bit more screen time.

  26. I would rather see khan meet up with a younger inexperience Kirk if time travel is the theme for the next movie,However they should have stuck with cannon in the last film and showed Capt. Pike whipping kirk ensign butt into shape to earn the privilege of commanding the Enterprise. Finally the gorn are a minor power and really are’nt able to challenge the Federation or their Klingon neighbors in a protracted war of any kind.

  27. No Gorn, as far as a major rising power goes,Because of the foolish of the last movie producers all they did was put Star Trek on life support and killed the cannon. First of all they should have shown Capt. Pike kicking dumb ass ensign Kirk in his butt to get is act together to earn the privilege to command the Enterprise despite who his father was.

  28. okay your star trek 2 is set for release, now finally work on the cloverfield sequel already
