J.J. Abrams: ‘Super 8′ is Not Cloverfield Related

jj abrams super 8 secret trailer J.J. Abrams: Super 8 is Not Cloverfield Related

J.J. Abrams, master of mystery and of forceful patience, has updated the world on his super secret Super 8 project. More accurately, he has updated us on what Super 8 project isn’t going to be: a prequel or sequel to Cloverfield.

When news broke yesterday that there was an electronically locked final reel distributed with Iron Man 2 for its North American release this weekend containing a mysterious trailer for an unknown J.J. Abrams project, Vulture later reported the following:

Our sources also say that Super 8 is absolutely connected to 2008′s Cloverfield (possibly a prequel, but not a sequel).

According to Abrams, this is not the case.

In an update,Vulture caught up with Abrams at the 2010 Time 100 Gala and asked for clarification.

“You have to check [out the trailer]… But it has nothing whatsoever to do with Cloverfield, despite your expert reporting.”

If not Cloverfield-related, what is this film about?

“I won’t be able to tell you until it’s done.”

J.J. is a master of this game and even though the world knows nothing about this movie other than its title, it will no doubt become one of the most buzzed about films until its release. I’m very intrigued by all of this so it’s certainly working, and this just adds one more reason to check out Iron Man 2 in theaters this weekend.

In their brief chat, J.J. Abrams also confirmed that the trailer is being kept under tight security and that it is passcode-protected on the distributed reels.

Any ideas on what to expect from the creator of Alias, Lost, Cloverfield and the rebirth of Star Trek on this one?

I wonder if parts of the movie will be shot on Super 8 mm film … get it?

Dammit! I love JJ, but really want to see Clover ( and his Mom ) sooner than later. Hopefully there will be another SLUSHO reference in this new project.

Lol.. Why do I get the feeling he’s talking Super 8 mm FILM. Some kind of action/drama where something important is captured on Super 8 film.?! I would say another Kennedy biopic but the Zapruder film was regular 8mm I believe…

I really loved cloverfield. It was a really original (being the relative term) way to start 2008 and I would really love a sequel. I mean look at what else came out that year. Altho working at the the theater in my home town, we only had one guy have a seizure in cloverfield.

Cloverfield made my wife want to puke. Not the story or characters but the epileptic camera movements.

I like that, he’s keepng things fresh, not doing loads of sequels to his work. I’d have liked him to come back to direct Mission Impossible 4, but it looks like he’s the kind of person who likes to work on fresh projects all the time.

I think he’s doing a remake of Andy Warhol’s film of the Empire State Building. 1 static camera, 8 hours long, dawn to dusk. That’s it.
