One of this year’s biggest names in Hollywood is getting a little bit bigger. Last month, we finally saw the release of Star Trek, the film that set out to rekindle the near-dead sci-fi franchise and succeeded beyond anyone’s imagination. The man responsible for this success is of course, J.J. Abrams.
If you follow film or television news in the slightest bit, then you know this man. On our TV sets, he brought us Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe and on the silver screen, he engineered movies such as Cloverfield, Mission: Impossible 3 and of course, Star Trek.

A god amongst the geek world, Abrams got his first gig as a feature film director directly from Tom Cruise. Cruise watched his show Alias on DVD and fell in love with it. That led to Tom asking J.J. to direct M:i:3 and it turned out very well for the both of them. The film helped erase some of the negatives many folks had with the prior installment and went over well amongst the critics.
Since that time, there’s been plenty of speculation about a Mission: Impossible 4. Back in March we heard a tidbit of information about another M:I where Cruise revealed that he was working out a story for another movie. All three movies made boatloads of cash at the box office and it’s a sure-fire way for Tom to star in blockbuster action flick that’s guaranteed to sell – it was only a matter of time till we saw more movement on this project.
Well, that time has come and we now know that J.J. Abrams will be back to help. However, his involvement as of this time will be of a different sort than that of the last movie. According to the latest issue of TV Guide, Cruise invited Abrams back to produce the next film. There’s no word yet on whether or not he will direct.
“I am incredibly honored that Tom has invited me back as a producer on Mission: Impossible 4… Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea we are pursuing.”
I’m sold. Call me biased but I enjoy all of Abrams’ work and I look forward to seeing another Mission: Impossible if he’s part of the creative team. J.J. has sure found himself nicely nested in some massive franchises with this, Trek having upcoming films and Fringe coming back for a second season.

I joke because I care. But yeah, I like the idea of a 4th and love the idea of Abrams doing it.
They explained the IIII in the thread that announced this movie’s probability. And it is indeed someone lazy with photoshop, lol, but I like it better this way, funnier.
Anyway, 3 was the only one I liked, so glad Abrams is back. The only thing I can think of while looking at that photo of Abrams with the MP5 is “you’re doin’ it wrong” lol, hopefully that doesn’t start another True Lies quote fest…
3 was very good and right now JJ can do no wrong.
So will the sequel to M:I:1111 actual and a slash running through the 4 one’s to represent 5? HAHAHA
I don’t know why everyone thinks the M:I movies were so good. I thought the first one was decent and the other 2 were a complete waste of my time. M:I3 was so boring I didn’t even finish watching it. I will NOT be wasting my cash OR money on M:I4.
I liked all 3 and will see number 4. Many seem to hate number 2 but I found it more entertaining than 3. Well, to each his own.
I saw the first two. Liked 1, hated 2, hate tom cruise. Wont see this one either.
i think it should be M:i:4 though; not M:i:IIII. Or at least M:i:IV. M:i:IIII just seems too llllllllllllong.

This is good news indeed! Abrams is a fantastic creative source, and Tom showed us in Valkyrie that he’s as good or better than ever! Looking forward to this.

Lookin forward to a 4th, I love this series, almost as much as I love Jason Bourne.
Mission: Impossible III was the first one in the franchise to really get things right. Yes, it was basically “Alias” with a male lead, but still… that’s what a spy flick is supposed to be like. The first film came close, but wasn’t quite there. The second one… well, that one was just bad. Even if Abrams doesn’t direct, I think he’s smart enough to give us a solid story… which where the first two really fell short. A good movie always starts with a good script.
I’m with Steve I hate “Cruise Control”…and will pass on any of his films..Like I’ve said before with that big phony smile he reminds me of Dr. Teeth from the Muppets..

Opposite of GUNSMITH here, for me, as long as it’s not John Woo and his slow motion white doves, I’m game. I liked the 3rd the most out of the 3, 2 was the worst one by far.
I was young when I watched MI:2 the first time. I thought there was somethin there – sorry, i think it’s an awful flick and 3 may well be the best. Have high hopes for 4 now. Get Michelle Monaghan back.
People aren’t giving the first Mission Impossible a lot of love. The plot is overly complicated, but it does well on repeat viewings.
MI1-great, MI2-bahh, MI3-great…Bring back abrams to direct…his first three major films have been great successes…he’s on a streak!
JJ Abrams has only directed 2 films.

As much of a Cruise hater as I am I thought the first Mission Impossible was done very well…
I’m not really too high on the “I <3 Tom” scale either, but i do like him as Ethan Hunt
JJ doesn’t have time for MI4. he has two more Star Trek movies to make. ST 2&3 was commissioned the day before the ST premier.

That’s likely why he’s not committed to directing the next mission impossible but instead is just producing (at the moment anyways).
Who knows, maybe J.J. won’t direct the next Star Trek… He’s known for being the creating force behind things then passing it on as he oversees…

Is there any indication that he has to start those Star Trek sequels straight away? I see no reason why he can’t leave it for a year or two and do another movie inbetween. Perhaps not MI4 because that would be a huge undertaking to do before another huge undertaking, but maybe a smaller project.

There is already a 2011 release date being talked about for ST 12.
