There may be some noteworthy Marvel Comics character heading to the small screen, for the upcoming Jessica Jones season 2. Production on Jessica Jones season 2 is now underway, continuing the story of everyone's favorite Marvel P.I. (played by Krysten Ritter) in the process. Season 1 of the series was highly praised by critics, but for the followup season, some of the biggest characters will not be returning. Luke Cage (Mike Colter) is not expected to appear again, and Jessica snapped the neck of her season 1 antagonist, Kilgrave (David Tennant).

This has left many wondering what season 2 will hold with some key season 1 characters off the show. Both Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor) and Malcolm (Eka Darville) are slated to return in Jessica Jones season 2, with Will Travel teasing his return as Nuke. Even with these familiar faces returning, it's to be expected that the series will expand its world in seasons two - and now we know some potential candidates who will help do just that.

That Hashtag Show and MCU Exchange have joined forces to reveal character breakdowns for Jessica Jones season 2 and provide some educated guesses as to who these mystery characters could be. Their theories are assuming these are characters being pulled in some way from Marvel Comics and not original characters, but take a look at the breakdowns before the theories start:

  • Dr. Kirby: 60's, male, open ethnicity, scientist, free thinker - Series regular for 1 season
  • Presley: Late 30's, male, African American, intelligent, driven, self-assured - Fractional series regular
  • Oliver: 34-38, male, Latino, artistic, paternal, smart, scruffy and hip - Series regular
  • Ingrid: Early-mid 30's, 5'8-5'11, female, dark hair, attractive and edgy, has a history of living on the streets. Educated as a nurse, but streetwise. She is attracted to both men and women - Series regular
Jessica Jones Kristen Ritter

While these character breakdowns are concrete, the speculation for who they are stand ins for is far from it. To start with Dr. Kirby, both sites believe this character will actually be Dr. Karl Malus. In the comics, Malus is the founder of the Institute for Supranormality Research, where he would help give powers to or increase the powers of more obscure Marvel characters. For the purposes of the show, if this is Malus then he could be trading in ISR for a job with IGH, the company behind Jessica's powers. While the breakdown does specifically call for male, the only new Jessica Jones season 2 cast member announced so far is Janet McTeer, so it could be possible for her to take this role or possibly one of Malus' co-workers.

For the breakdown of Presley, it is believed that this could be a stand in for Paladin. Like Jessica, he too is a P.I. but he operates more in the grey area. This could allow him to be both a friend and foe to Jessica throughout season 2 - and given his strong ties to Defenders and Heroes for Hire, Paladin would be a natural fit for this universe. Plus, if this is Paladin, it appears they plan to change his ethnicity to further diversify the show.

Meanwhile, Oliver is speculated to actually be Otis 'Danger' Johnson. He has similarly strong ties to Heroes for Hire, but not necessarily with Jessica. He has indestructible skin just like Luke, but whereas Luke is a towering and imposing figure, Otis is anything but. If this is the case, he could add a sense of humor to the show, give them a Latino hero, and possibly further connect to IGH.

The last breakdown may be the most interesting if the speculation is proven to be true, as it is theorized that Ingrid could be Typhoid Mary. She is a character that has long been pegged to be introduced in the Netflix corner of the MCU and would provide the show with a strong female villain to go opposite of Jessica. Her breakdown is extremely complicated, but since Mary has multiple personalities - some of which can manifest powers like pyrokinesis or telekinesis - her vast history makes more sense.

Again, all of these possible characters are just theories for the time being, and they could very well be original characters for the show or amalgamations of multiple comic characters. Either way, if some or all of these prove to be true, season two is already shaping up nicely.
