Jessica Chastain Iron Man 3 Jessica Chastain In Talks to Join Iron Man 3 Cast [Updated]

Although there is a lot of uncertainly surrounding expectations for Iron Man 3, Marvel Studios and new helmsman Shane Black are certainly starting on the right foot with news surrounding recent and potential casting additions. First it was Oscar-winner Sir Ben Kingsley in talks to play an Iron Man 3 villain, then it was fan-fave Guy Pearce joining the cast as geneticist Aldrich Killian.

Soon, we may be adding Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain to the growing (and star-studded) Iron Man 3 ensemble as well.

Deadline has the latest casting scoop which points towards Chastain being offered the role of a “sexy” and “smart” scientist in a leading role, but she initially couldn’t do it due to scheduling issues. Diane Kruger, Gemma Arterton and Isla Fisher were reportedly lined up as potential replacements but thanks to a delay in one of her other projects, Chastain’s available for for filming on Iron Man 3, which begins next month in China.

Following previous casting announcements and the fact that Iron Man 3‘s principal photography takes place in China, it’s a no-brainer that Shane Black and Drew Pearce’s screenplay is following Warren Ellis’ “Extremis” storyline which has been the common theme shared in most Iron Man 3 related stories. That being the case, it stands to reason that if she signs, Chastain will be playing the role of Maya Hansen, the scientist behind the Extremis tech who allies and helps out Tony Stark, eventually joining S.H.I.E.L.D. (and she’s another love interest).

If made official, Marvel is nailing their casting and our hopes and expectations rise up even more as Iron Man 3 positions itself as a standalone, yet worthy follow-up to The Avengers.

[Update 1: Jessica Chastain cannot join Iron Man 3 due to scheduling conflicts]

[Update 2: Rebecca Hall (The Town) is now up for the role.]

While The Avengers benefits from bringing together a large group of stars for the epic team-up adventure, Iron Man 3 makes up for that by bringing in a spotlight-worthy cast of its own. Jessica Chastain, who enjoyed a career year in 2011 with The Debt, Take Shelter, The Help, The Tree of Life and The Texas Killing Fields,  joins Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and returnees Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle.

Iron Man 3 begins principal photography in May and is scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2013.

  1. Damn, this cast keeps getting better and better. Can’t wait for The Avengers and this to come out.

  2. another love interest, can i play Tony Stark? I wonder if he made love in the suit ?Jessica is gorgeous and Paltrow too, damn to be in hollywood now spring in here :)I think the fourth Iron Man movie if theres gonna be a fourth should focus on stark’s drinking problem, that would be great film too.

    • Retractable codpiece?

      • Man, you guys have the filthiest minds I have ever encountered. Glad I’m not the only one. 😀

  3. I hope they don’t ruin her hair like they did for Paltrow and Johansson.

    • thanks man, i am glad someone finally said it.

seriously Scarlett Johansson’s hair as black widow never really did it for me….

  4. They passed up on Diane Kruger?!

  5. I am so in love with this girl! She has Talent and now my hopes are even higher for this movie. :)

  6. Great actress

  7. What? She could even be a deadringer for Bethany Cabe!!!

  8. I have just read the Iron Man Extremis graphic novel . Whoa. it was so darn good. Adi Granov’s art work is so cinematic and immersive that makes you feel as if you’re watching Iron Man on an IMAX theater. The same accolade goes to Warren Ellis, the writer of this storyline. I’m glad that the producers decided that this was the best way to go for Iron Man 3. This “Extremis” storyline can spawn more Iron Man sequels for sure.

  9. Great choice for the role, but the more cast members are added, the more it sinks in that Extremis will be the story line :(

Moving on: Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlet Johansson (yes, she’s in the movie too) and now Jessica Chastain!
Stark is one lucky guy… 😉

    • Yeah I think this is pretty much confirmed. It may not match the story page for page but they will definitely be following it.

It’s also a pretty safe bet that this new addition is definitely NOT playing The Mandarin.

      • Well, they already have a guy to play the Mandarin… Sir Ben Kingsly 😉
yeah, yeah, I know they denied it (kind of), but come on… who else would it be?!

        • Yes but if so he won’t be playing The Mandarin WE want. He will just be some terrorist in a business suit with technology at his disposal. /yawn

          • I’m cool with that… for the most part.
I mean, of course it would have been better if he were the REAL Mandarin, but I’ve always suspected we’d see a “watered down version”, so I wouldn’t really be disappointed if that’s what we get.

    • I thought I was the only one unhappy with Extremis as the choice for IM3…care to expand on that?

      • I just don’t think it’s the right direction they should be going with Tony Stark.
The story is alienating and completely transforms Tony Stark into a character that I care nothing about. Tony Stark isn’t supposed to be a guy with powers – the whole appeal is that he’s a normal (granted, very rich and genius) guy that wears an iron suit that makes him a superhero. Giving that guy powers isn’t something they should be doing IMO (and the powers he does get in the CB is just plain weird).
Plus, the nano/bio-tech route isn’t really what I’ve come to expect from the IM movie franchise.

        • My thoughts exactly. I don’t really think the Extremis powers will translate well to the big screen, and I too enjoy this incarnation of Tony as a regular joe with this incredible technology that allows him to be a hero.

          • Oh and you’re most definitely not the only one unhappy about Extremis in IM3… so far, I’ve heard more negative comments about the decision than positive comments.

That said, I’m still willing to wait and see. So far, no one knows exactly how closely it will follow the books (maybe Stark doesn’t get powers, maybe he just prevents the Extremis virus from being unleashed?)
Only time will tell I guess…

            • I’m willing to wait and see how much they adapt from the Extremis story line as well. I’m really hoping Kingley is the Mandarin trying to unleash Extremis, and maybe he has some fights with someone infected by it.

  10. I KNEW Maya Hansen would be in IM3! Since The Extemis story will be plot line, it only makes sense. And Jessica Chastain? YES! ( although, a do have a small infatuation with Diane Kreuger. )

I know a lot of peeps don’t like Extremis, but in an IM film it’s gonna be radical! I would gather that since IM2 was so silly and disapointing , Marvel, Black and RDJ are finally showing that they willing to take some risks for a change. Extremis will bring a much harsher and darker tone to IM.

Now, maybe if we can talk the great Stan Lee into taking a pass on his cameo, we will finally get a Marvel movie that is great and different than the rest.

    • I don’t need darker, I want the 10 rings of power dammit! I’m tired of high tech vs high tech and this will just be installment #3 of that;

      IM1 – IM vs bigger/clunkier IM clone
IM2 – IM vs Iron Men
IM3 – IM vs nano tech (or worse, the bad guy will have an extremis suit just like IM, so more of the same)

  11. The Extremis storyline in the comics enabled Tony Stark to become a cyborg and “embed” the Iron Man tech suit like his second skin. I’d like to see that for part 3… it would be so cool if that happens.

  12. Does anyone else think she could play Lisa Hayes in a Robotech movie? They look almost identical.

  13. Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, and Ben Kingsley? They are wanting Iron Man 3 to be best of the Iron Man films. I dont know much of the Extremis story but to those that are worrying, IM2 was suppose to be the Demon in the Bottle storyline and it wasnt so you can sleep soundly tonight.

  14. she looks like a cross between angelina jolie and julia roberts.

    • Yes! Good spot.

  15. Man this is a good cast can tell this gonna be way better the ln ironman 2

    • IM2 had a great cast as well… just sayin 😉

  16. Guy Pearce – check
    Ben Kingsley – check
    Jessica Chastain – check

Now Andy Lau is in talks to join Iron Man 3….

Wow.. Marvel/Disney and director Shane Black is going all out to make a real good Iron Man movie.

  17. Oooh I like her, she’s lovely.

Um, so what’s gonna happen to Pepper while this is all happening? Unless sth happens to her in Avengers, which I doubt…Hmmm.
