Jessica Biel as Thor’s Love Interest?

I just had to continue praising Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, didn’t I?

Earlier today, I wrote about some updates of how things were progressing very well with the development of the Thor feature film and that Marvel and its people were very happy with and working positively towards a film with great potential.

Then came the news later today that Jessica Biel is currently in contract negotiations for a role in the film…


The rumor originates from Nuke The Fridge where one of their inside sources claims that Biel is in talks to join the cast as the love interest of Thor. Their source wasn’t sure on which character that may be but was convinced that it was one of the female characters featured in the Thor section of the Hulk Vs. set.

If true, that would mean that the 7th Heaven star would likely be playing either Sif or Amora, The Enchantress. Sif is an Asgardian Warrior who was a love interest of Thor so that could work. As for Amora, in the comics she was the villainous antagonist who has both worked with Thor’s nemesis, Loki, and used her powers to sway the mighty God of Thunder to her side.

My guess goes to Amora.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t have anything against Biel, I just don’t think her experience and talents mesh with those cast and involved with the film so far. Perhaps that’s unfair and maybe she gave a perfect audition for one of the roles.

Either way, I much prefer the Natalie Portman rumor to play the female lead in the film. I think she’s much more talented and much easier to take seriously. Biel on the other hand has recently been involved with some very unimpressive projects and roles and I can’t really take her seriously. Could they both be playing prominent roles in the film?

Maybe the folks behind the film are banking on Biel’s appeal with the younger crowds that a bunch of Shakespearean actors or unknowns wouldn’t be able to draw in as easily, especially in a film that will be the most difficult to sell out of Marvel’s in-development projects.

Again, I do not dislike Biel by any means and if by chance she does land a role in the film, I’ll reserve judgment until I see her performance.

Thor is scheduled to hit theaters May 20, 2011.

    Honestly, why does it have to be a 'name'? Go find a true Norwegian smokin' hottie and I'm good. And Natalie Portman? Double ugh.

  • Rob, I think you're jumping the gun in assuming she would be Amora. Given Biel's look, I would think casting her as Sif would make more sense. She's not inexperienced with action films, so that's another plus for her as Sif. Yes, it would seem counter to a lot of the casting, but they need a recognizable name in this film somewhere. Personally, I find this much better casting, if she's being cast as Sif, than the casting of Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 2 as the Black Widow. In any case, I hope your assumption of her playing Amora is wrong. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

    Anyway, regarding Jessica Biel I agree with you, Rob, I don't think she fits in the movie that well either, but she's a better choice than some others I could think of... and I can't see her playing Sif, either. The Enchantress would definitely be a better role for her looks.

    I don't think that's jumping the gun, lol. It's only rumored that she may be in the film and only rumored that she may be one of those characters - I just threw out a guess for fun of which of the two I could see her as.

    I'm fine with her playing either

    If I had to choose between the two, it would be a close call (lets say 51% Biel, 49% Portman)

    Biel for Enchantress (drool....) and Portman for Sif? I think that would be a great combination.

    I thought Jessica was brilliant in the most underrated (top 5 best films) of the last few years, The Illusionist. I'll bet that's were Kennith saw that special something in her frauline performance. If you have not seen the Illusionist, see it some time over the weekend.

    Biel has the chops and evrything else

    No put down your 360 controllers for a couple hours and watch The illusionist

    @ Lord Garth. Yeah, man, the Illussionist is one of my top 10 favourite films. It had a very good plot, and was well-acted and brilliantly made overall.

    Now, if Biel gives a performance in Thor as the one in that film, I'm totally on it. But of not...
  • I\thought Biel was the best thing in Blade Trinity and she would be well suited for the warrior role.
  • Ooo... Natalie Portman or Jessica Biel, tough call, but I suppose it depends on what day of the week. Portman M-Thurs, Biel takes the rest!

    But if we're talking acting chops, and we are, Portman is a better fit with the established cast. Biel playing the other chick character, Valkyrie (though she doesn't appear in Hulk Vs) is right up the 'Abigail Whistler' alley though.

    i suppose this is a very good opportunity for jessica biel to be cast and involved in a very serious film with merit ans substance. she will be surrounded by very very smart actors directors & poducers. my choice for biel's role in thor movie is the part of amora the enchantress. can someone please tell me when can we expect to see some pictures of chris hemsworth in his thor costume?
