While The Bourne Legacy is undoubtedly one of our most anticipated movies of 2012, there has certainly been a lot of question surrounding this odd sequel/reboot of the popular Jason Bourne movie franchise – first and foremost being the decision to continue on without franchise star Matt Damon as the titular character, and (as a distant second) without director Paul Greengrass, who made great successes out of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

Of course, having Bourne franchise trilogy Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) handling script and directing duties on this new film doesn’t hurt; nor does having  Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner stepping into center ring as the new lead. However, details on who Renner’s new secret agent character will be have been scant…until now.

Today we have a first image of Renner in The Bourne Legacy, along with details such as his character’s name, and how he fits in the Bourne universe.

First, check out what Renner had to say to Empire about his character, another agent in the shady world of assassins that fostered Bourne:

My character is called Aaron Cross, but he ends up having a bunch of different names. For fans of the franchise, [The Bourne Legacy] has that same ticking clock, but it’s a new programme and new characters.

Regarding how “Aaron Cross” fits into the already-established Bourne universe – specifically regarding the covert assassin training program called Treadstone:

Yeah, it’s that same deal, it’s just a new set of agents with a different leash. It’s the same tempo and pace but more expansive and bigger. The differences are pretty vast but you’ll know it’s a Bourne movie.

There’s enough in those statements to give us wondering fans some (much-needed) clarification, while still leaving enough room to approach this new chapter with a fresh mentality. Renner’s words also leave plenty of room for some surprises, as well as some narrative connections between this requel and the Bourne trilogy that came before it – hopefully leading to an eventual meeting between Cross and Jason Bourne himself.

Now, check out what Renner looks like as Aaron Cross (courtesy of USA Today) – and try not to mock the haircut too much:

At the moment Renner is enjoying a well-deserved hot-streak in his career, but between his new roles as a secret agent in Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol, a secret agent/superhero in Marvel’s The Avengers, and this secret agent (assassin?) in Bourne Legacy…we may need to see him take on more varied roles in the near future – lest he start to run circles like some other popular leading men (Mr. Depp? Mr. Downey?).

The Bourne Legacy will be in theaters on August 3, 2012. The film also stars Ed Norton, Rachel Weisz, Oscar Isaac with Joan Allen returning as Pam Landy.

  1. as long as they don’t have alot (or any) shaky cam bs its all good, renner is a decent action actor (was pretty good in MI4) but i have yet to see him tackle action on a large scale – long fight scenes, big shoot outs etc, all i’ve seen thus far are quick snippets of action from him.

    • That would be a shame if they didnt have shakey cam. Its one of my favorite filming styles and it adds so much to the attitude of the scenes they are a part of.

      • you kiddin’ me right, it does nothing but confuse the viewer and point out the fact that the actors cant fight, what we need is more fluent fight scenes (quick is good but i want to see some nice close quarter counters etc like in taken and that end fight scene in unleashed) with no quick cuts or shaky cam (like bourne 3 and expendables) so that we can properly understand how deadly these guys are.

      • I agree with that, its part of the style of the movie so that you really could feel the intensified characters of the movie. I’m just wondering if they really could pull it off like the first three films.

  2. Glad Greengrass isnt directing, maybe now we’ll get to actually view well choreographed action sequences instead of three million split second blurry frames jumbled together.

  3. I hope the plot somehow justifies the title.

    • Agreed.

  4. I was going to say that same – I hope it’s not going to be blurry action, because then it doesn’t actually matter if Renner is good in fight scenes. That action speed up was a dealbreaker for me, and ruined those movies. It probably was needed because it was Matt Damon, but Renner can do way better.

  5. Renner is gonna do so much better then Damon in Bourne

  6. Is it just me, or does he look like Damon in that photo?

    • No. “Did they try to make him look similar to Bourne?” was my first thought when I saw the pic. He doesn’t look like an action star to me in his other pics though.

I haven’t seen Renner in any of his films yet. Maybe (hopefully) he can pull it off.
I would love to see Damon again as Jason Bourne (preferably without Greengrass and his shaky cam. It might be artistic but it’s not for me. I’d like to see the action. And Damon could pull it off as we saw in The Bourne Identity) but I fear his story is already told.
I’ll go watch this, I won’t see it as a “Bourne film” though.
Maybe they do another film with both Damon and Renner. That would be cool. One can hope.

  7. No..

  8. I’m still hoping that Matt Damon aka Jason Bourne makes a cameo like at the end to open it up to the next film after this. Like Ving Rhames made his cameo in the last MI4. They said, he was not going to be in it. Okay that makes sense but he still did the cameo. Which I am hoping they do with Matt Damon. I do believe this will still be an action fast pace movie like the rest and Renner is a very good actor. It’ll be good.

    • A cameo would be great. As Damon is probably the king of cameos it’s not unlikely.

  9. Gilroy keeps saying that Bourne is “very much alive…” So does that mean he is making a cameo, or he is keeping his fingers crossed that should Legacy workout, that Damon will have a change of heart and return. Could be interesting.

I’m keeping an open mind. I am very much a Renner fan. I know he can pull it off and with this supporting cast, it will be tough not to.

As for the shaky camera, keep it. It’s what made Bourne movies what they are. And if you don’t like it, go b#tch somewhere else and don’t pay the price of the admission. Simple as that.

  10. The image is okay, Jermey Renner is awesome.

I watched The Bourne Ultimatum, it was okay.

I think as long as Matt waits to return for a another Bourne movie, it would be great for the series to take a new diection.

Also the article describes Jeremy Renner being a type cast with him playing a sercet agnet in MI4, The Avengers and now Bourne Legacy, I also think he should turn on new roles and do more thillers than action but come on, look at The Rock and Vin Diesel, I mean Diesel did The Paficer and The Rock did Toothy Fair so those movies were awful and shows that those guys deserved to be in action than some crappy Diesey movies.

Diesel was great in Fast Five and The Rock made a great comeback in action genre by doing Fast Five.

The fight between him and Diesel was the best part of the movie.

  11. anyone remember renner being in season 1 of angel…. he played angel’s vampire progeny, who was good at hammy acting. nice to see he’s calmed that s**t down. also, no one can replace matt damon as jason bourne… the whole first 3 films were awesome, the story, the acting, the action. i just hope they keep the same overall mode.

  12. What’s the point of that image being released? Seriously. It’s a picture of Renner standing in a jacket.

  13. Why is this movie not called “Treadstone”? Any Bourne fan would know it’s a connection to Bourne without being ticked off by the fact that it’s not even, really, about Bourne himself. I’m still waiting to see if this guy actually turns out to be one of Bourne’s son’s alias. His son is also an assassin in the books, so it could work. Only problem is that Damon and Renner are about the same age….

  14. Do any of you even understand what legacy means? Seems not. Anyways, Damon said himself that he would like to come back to do Bourne 5 with Greengrass and also he could maybe do a Bourne movie where Renner and him are whooping ass together. Also, he said, even if this Bourne flops, he might make his own Bourne movie since Universal doesn’t own the rights to Bourne franchise but the estate does.

    • Of course we know what it means. Fact is that I think they DO try to get money by using the name Bourne in the title.
Bourne and Cross together would be cool. *crosses fingers*
