jeremy renner as hawkeye iron man 2 avengers Jeremy Renner Signs On as Hawkeye in The Avengers?

Last November we reported on the possibility of The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner suiting up as the character Hawkeye for Marvel Studios. It was unclear where the character would first show up but rumors dating back to 2008 had the character initially playing a role in Iron Man 2. As we know now, that wasn’t the case at all. If we do get to meet Hawkeye, it would likely be in The Avengers.

Speculation on Renner’s involvement really started to grow when the Oscar-nominated actor went into detail about what the live-action adaptation of Hawkeye would look like and it was clear that the folks at Marvel whom he spoke with were gearing the character towards the Ultimates version. Unfortunately for us fans, Renner shot down the Hawkeye rumors a month later, stating that there was “no truth to [him] doing it.”

Now comes word that our hopes may come true with the rumor that he’s actually signed on for the part!

Harry at AICN has a first-time source who has an “interesting connection” to this and that insider is saying Renner has actually signed on with Marvel for the part. At the moment, there are no other reports validating this yet but if it is true, this is big.

Let’s play with the idea that Renner is in fact, playing Hawkeye. According to what he said last year from his talks with Marvel (he’s friends with The Avengers writer Zak Penn who penned the early drafts), his thoughts were that Hawkeye could have a brief introduction in Thor.

“I met with the Marvel guys, actually, but we didn’t talk about Captain America. But one of the writers, Zak Penn, we’ve become friends over time and he was thinking maybe Hawkeye could be interesting. He sounds like an interesting character.”

“If I was a betting man, I would bet that Hawkeye would probably show up in Thor, and then be in The Avengers… But do I know for sure? I can’t say. But I’d love for that to happen. It’d be fun.”

Thor is just wrapping up production and its star Chris Hemsworth has already completed principal photography for his scenes. That means that if Renner’s Hawkeye were to play a part, it would like be a cameo, perhaps something for fans after the credits.

The more likely scenario however, is that Renner will be a part of the growing roster in The Avengers film and could get a larger role in the S.H.I.E.L.D. movie which we know is coming after The Avengers. That movie would focus on Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury character and other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents including Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow. If you’re familiar with the Ultimates (the Ultimate universe version of The Avengers where the movies are drawing ideas from), Hawkeye and Black Widow are partners for the organization under Nick Fury.

They’re pretty good at killing aliens, like the Skrulls who are the rumored villains for The Avengers, but that’s another topic for another time.

The Hawkeye we can expect to see form Marvel Studios is definitely closer to the Ultimates version which we can tell from what Renner was told in his meetings. When he chatted about the character in November with Ed Douglas at SHH, this is what he had to say:

“They sold me on the idea, too, because I love the idea that Hawkeye’s really not a superhero… He’s just a man with a high skill set, so I can relate to (that). The Marvel guys are great for how they made Iron Man to be, ‘Oh, that’s actually plausible’ so I bought it and I love that. They’re really, really smart guys and I’d love to work for ‘em, and we’ll see if it works out.”

“Yeah, but it’s going to be modernized, it’s not going to be the guy with the big purple (mask), it’s not going to be a guy in tights. It’s going to be a guy in sunglasses and a vest. He’s going to be more modernized and I’m gonna say, ‘A cooler-looking version’ and not the big weird costume he had on. I don’t think they’re going that route.”

Marvel is only signing multi-picture deals with their superhero actors so if Renner is on board, he’s here for the long haul and we can expect The Avengers to help launch several other opportunities for the character with sequels, the S.H.I.E.L.D. movie and more.

I really hope this rumor turns out to be true. Renner is talented, likable and he totally fits the bill to play Clint Barton. Make it so, Marvel (and Joss Whedon).

  1. Hell yeah!

  2. This is starting to sound like to many chefs in the kitchen with regards to the Avengers movie.

  3. Big fan of the actor and he is a good choice but they are doing the character a diservice. He should of had a small part in IM2 where he is believed to be a criminal by mistake. He could be stopping a burglary and inadvertanrly gets mistaken for the robber. Than iron man can come and he can be captured by the very hero that inspired him. He has no place in Thor and it would be terrible to just throw him in Avengers with out his back story. Avengers could have Fury or IM go to the prison finally realizing he was telling the truth and they could bring him to the team.

  4. Sounds cool ,I just hope that they bring the hulk into the avengers he needs to be a part of the movie,Edward norton as the hulk !!! is the way to go ^_^

  5. cant wait cant wait cant wait.. i cant wait for the avengers to come out. for the most part, none of the recent marvel movies sucked like its predecessors ie hulk, daredevil, punisher etc. for the most part marvel is hitting all the right notes and its looking good. unfortunately i think the hype is being killed with the mentioning of SHIELD and the now dropped Ultimates.

  6. Brilliant news. I love Hawkeye! but I dont see him being a fully fledged avenger in the first film

Also I love Hawkeye’s purple costume I hope he has a beleivable version of that

  7. I take it with a grain of salt and call it likely at this point. Knowles is pretty good at this stuff but he’s gotten bad info. before…

  8. almighty b which punisher movie are you referring to

  9. You know what is getting on my nerves? I am sick to frigin death of the studio “Modernizing the Character.” I want to see masks. They are taking aways Hawkeyes. They have already neutered Wolverine. I want to see them look the way they do in the comic. Some of the costumes are really gay looking and will need to have some updates to where they don’t look retarded but so far their solution is no masks unless you are Spider-man. If all else fails put them in black leather right? No. Give me the costume, the mask, and everything that goes with them. If there is one thing that DC is doing right, it’s that they refuse to change their characters.

  10. I think ur over reacting here bob. I’d agree with u except ur acting like it’s a trend but they have only done it to the xmen. It’s not some movement going on it was one franchise so far. Spiderman and iron man looked great so far from what we have seen Thor looks good and Daredevil wore a mask so I’m not sure where u get the idea that they are destroying masks.

    • @ Daniel F

Just in defense of bob, I cut and pasted what Jeremy Renner said from the second page of Rob’s article.

Man I hope what Renner says doesn’t happen. LOL “a guy in sunglasses and a vest”???? I’ll be sure to listen out for Corey Hart’s classic hit” Sunglasses at Night” :-)

Seriously I wasn’t all that thrilled with the X-Men costumes either and I hope MARVEL STUDIOS have enough sense not to get rid of Hawkeye’s iconic suit.

      • Really. I love Hawkeye. Love his purple costume. But agree that it would work in the movie. Look at Ultimate Hawkeye. Thats what they should go with. Great look and great story and background. You should just drop the costume thing and let them work there magic. Cause, as big as a Hawkeye fan i am, i dont want to see a man dress in the purple costume running around in a purple costume. Save it for the cartoons.

        • Sorry wouldn’t work in the movie is what i meant.

          • I’m sorry but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. No one is balking at Spiderman’s red & blue costume or Iron Man’s red & gold armor. Daredevil’s costume wasn’t too bad and The Watchmen costumes were a fine example, unlike the bland insipid modifications of X-Men.

Thor has a red cape, chain mail and blue in his costume. Captain America is red, white and blue. A professional costume designer could very well use darker toned down hues of indigo, violet, navy blue or deep purple and black to produce a formidable realistic looking battle suit. It would no doubt work very well in the movie.

The materials could be a combination of lycra, leather and chain mail or whatever else costume designers have in their arsenal. As long as it looks good and there is some degree of the iconic color identifiers I’ll be happy.

      • ………..sunglasses and a vest almost sounds like what they did to Green Arrow in Smallville…………. and it really doesn’t look that bad …IMO

looking forward to seeing Hawkeye, Renner is a great actor to play him

  11. Typo:

“…went into detail about what what the live-action adaptation of Hawkeye would look like…”

    What what! Lol

    I hope this is true!

    • Double whats in honor of Renner ;)

      I fixed.

  12. I don’t much care for Scarlett Johansson as an actress, but I would like to see her opposite Jeremy Renner. I think there could really be something there – - I can see that dynamic being palpable. But I don’t know the history of Black Widow or Hawkeye to know if it’s romantic or simply close partners. Please feel free to fill me in on that.

If the “S.H.I.E.L.D” movie is about the build up of S.H.I.E.L.D then Hawkeye should get an adequate backstory there. I picture the movie as showing how the agency was founded: Nick Fury with Howard Stark (perhaps another who turns bad and needs to be taken down). Then the recuritments of Black Widow (backstory) and Hawkeye (backstory) and their partnership’s ups and downs, being cemented in the teammwork of taking down a baddie. Throw in Agent Coulson starting out in the office, working out of a cubicle and slowly rising in the background of Fury til he’s sent out for groundwork recuitments after having proven himself. Perhaps with Black Widow and Hawkeye?

Act I: Fury and Stark as the founders. Building up the agency, seeking out potential reccruits.
Act II: Black Widow and Hawkeye backstories; the rise of Agent Coulson.
Act III: Recruitment of Black Widow and Hawkeye; the birth of a partnership among whisperings of strength serums, playboys masquerading as superheroes, and rumblings from another reality.

    • If you want to know about Hawkeye and Black Widows connection, i recommend you read Ultimates 2. Dont want to spoil it for you, but a great ending. Love the Ultimate Universe.

  13. Sounds good to me (and nice job on the image at the top of the page!). Hopefully we’ll see Renner alongside Fillion in The Avengers and beyond.

  14. ……Awesome! ( on both counts )

  15. Hey I didn’t like the xmen costumes either and I’m not liking what Jermey is describing I’m just saying bob was acting like it’s constantly happen no one wears mask but Spiderman is what he said but it’s only happened to the xmen and nothing about hawkeye is definitive yet. His words said except spiderman but ironman and DD both had their masks Ghost Ruder had his flaming skull and no one else even wears a mask. No if they do this with hawkeye and they don’t give Capt a mask then bob might be on to something.

  16. I don’t know but with the box office numbers of IRON MAN II, I think that MARVEL might slow things down abit. Now before you guys bite my head off think about this for a sec. 1. too much creen time for for Potts and the driver,2. too much bikering between Tony and Potts, IRON MAN was puting more people in danger that he was saving. The formula face scene were Happy or whatever his name goes to get Potts to take the suitcase armor to Tony. The first movie I went to see three times, this one only once. where was the hero in this movie. This movie won’t eclips the box office numbers of the first. Which it should offby alot maybe they’ll make up for it in IRON MAN III

  17. hawkeye has always had one of the coolest costumes and i feel like the costume is part of what i fell in love with as a child.

  18. I’ve never thought hawkeye had a cool costume certainly not one of the coolest. I’ve always found his costume to be flamboyant and not at all heroic or cool. If I didn’t know he was a straight man I’d think he was a girl or a gay guy.

  19. what gets me is that people forget that hawkeye came from the circus. the CIRCUS! PERFECT reason to put him in the purple suit. i know thats not backstory they will give him but dont forget where he really came from. also clint has changed aliases more times than i can count and always goes back to hawkeye in purple. if anything their already screwing up the character for not acknowledging that he LOVES his suit. the purple is a must and ultimates suck

    • The whole “Ultimate” universe sucks big time. :-)
