Jeremy Renner In Final Negotiations to Play Hawkeye!

Published 5 years ago by , Updated June 27th, 2013 at 3:14 pm,

Marvel Studios is giving everyone another major reason to get excited about their upcoming slate of films and his name is Jeremy Renner. You may have heard of the Oscar nominated star and bad-ass character actor from his performance in that little film The Hurt Locker which took the award circuit by storm earlier this year.

While Marvel has not released a confirmation, Heat Vision is reporting that Jeremy Renner is nearing completion of a deal that would see him appear as Hawkeye in The Avengers which begins production early next year.

This is both surprising and unsurprising since Renner’s name has been connected with the role for over a year now, originating with him having met with Marvel to talk about the character. On the other hand, it’s a tad surprising since it’s too good to be true!

While occupied with the aftermath of The Hurt Locker, Renner denied any and all rumors of him having signed to play the character with possible cameos in either Iron Man 2 or Thor but he did drop hints about what we can expect from Marvel’s ideas for the live-action adaptation of the Hawkeye character and his costume.

Fast forward a few months to just last week and talk of the subject hit a new high when Harry Knowles at AICN reported from an insider that Renner had actually already signed on to play Hawkeye. As it turns out, Harry’s source was pretty close and Renner was definitely in talks with Marvel.

According to this latest report, Renner is signing on for the role as it’s a supporting character which still allows him the scheduling time needed to work on other projects,  namely Paul Thomas Anderson’s untitled drama should it get financed. That and his interest in the character of Hawkeye as emphasized in his words about the character and fondness to the idea that Hawkeye doesn’t have special powers, he’s a regular man with special skills.

Heat Vision is also reporting that Marvel Studios is doing their best to control costs for their super-ambitious Avengers movie and the key actors are taking serious salary cuts to make it work. We already know Marvel has been very strict on their contracts as we saw with the past issues surrounding the signing of Samuel L. Jackson to a 9-picture contract to play Nick Fury and of Mickey Rourke to play the main villain in Iron Man 2.

Marvel’s strategy is a great one for planning long-term and to allow such a high-potential and massive franchise to grow. With Chris Evans also signing a 9-picture deal for The First Avenger: Captain America and other key actors optioned for extra films, Marvel can pump out sequels, cross-overs and other team-up films in the years post-The Avengers.

Jeremy Renner will play a variant of Ultimate Hawkeye

I couldn’t be more excited about Jeremy Renner playing Clint Barton, in a similar character to the Ultimate version of Hawkeye from the comics. It has been no surprise that there exists an overwhelmingly positive response from fans to the frequent rumors over the last year. The response of fans to Renner playing Hawkeye no doubt played a significant factor for Marvel Studios making this happen and I hope it help in them signing Ed Norton to play Bruce Banner as well.

We don’t know yet how many movies Renner is signing for but we can expect a standard multi-picture deal which would allow for appearances in the S.H.I.E.L.D. movie, sequel(s) to The Avengers or possible cameos in future films such as Iron Man 3.

What do you think of Jeremy Renner bringing Hawkeye to life?

  1. this is very exciting news. after the news of getting chris evans signed as cap, i lost a lil faith in marvels casting decisions but this is good news if it proves true.

    • NO NO NO!!! Don’t get me wrong, Hawkeye’s cool and all, but I thought Avangers was just fine using the four most memorable. As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a filler character giving Renner something to do.

  2. Please, can he wear an ACTUAL costume?

    • regarding the costume, IM2 was pretty faithful with Black Widow’s costume, hopefully they’ll figure out some blend of the comic costume and something a lil more functional

      • But Black Widow’s costume isn’t very hard to “get right”
Black Bodysuit. Black Widow logo somewhere. Webshooter looking things on the wrists. Done.

For Hawkeye I want to see something OTHER than a generic sleeveless athletic top. Something actually eye catching and iconic.

        • you’re right, I guess I was just surprised that Widow had the widow’s sting guantlets (even if they served no purpose in the movie)

with Hawkeye, the costume is fine, maybe minus the tunic, crazy eyes on the cowl, and the giant H – then again that would basically be a purple jumpsuit.

never mind – I’m all out of ideas. this guy looks perfect for the part, but I’m surprised Hawkeye is being considered for this movie (maybe Avengers sequel but not the first one)

  3. I’ve always considered this character to be one of the lamest characters marvel has. So not much interest here.

    • Hmmm.. You just like to read and post about stuff that you think are lame or stuff your not a fan of,goog idea. You’ve totally influenced me now.I hate Hawkeye too, as a matter of fact I hate, all of Marvel stuff and I hate Screenrant too. :/

    • For me, Angel is the lamest; all he does is fly…big whoop! Of course, when he became Archangel, then he was good; then he went back to being boring angel.

I think Hawkeye is OK. Not the best Marvel character but not the lamest either.

  4. I feel like The Avengers is turning into Marvel trying to squish too much stuff into not enough space. It seems that they will have Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Nick Fury, Black Widow and the rest of S.H.E.I.L.D., Ant-Man, the Hulk, now Hawkeye, and also possibly the Wasp. not to mention that a whole entire race of aliens is supposed to invade. this all to me just seems like a lot to try and fit into one movie. I do hope, however that Marvel is successful in this endeavor because it will usher in a whole new era in the Comic Book Movie genre

    • Have you ever read an Avengers comic?

Thats generally the way it is…

      Whats the problem?

      • What’s the problem? Money. For this to be like the comic, Marvel will have to make the most expensive film in history. Of course, if they do do it right and make it PG-13, it will be the highest grossing film of all time. Let’s hope they can pull this off.

    • I’m hoping for a three- or four-hour director’s cut/extended edition so that all the characters will get plenty of screen-time.

Really though, I’m not worried. X-Men 1 & 2 had a whole bunch of characters, and those films turned out pretty damn well. If Fox and Bryan Singer can do it, Marvel Studios and Joss Whedon certainly can.

      • I wonder if the Avengers won’t be a multi-part movie. Maybe a 2 part film where the main conflict isn’t resolved until Avengers2 some 6 months later.

I can see Thor getting a sequel and Iron Man 3 defintely happening after the Avengers movie. But how are Chris Evans and SLJ going to fill out those 9 movie contracts without an extra Avengers movie (or two) included. I can’t see S.H.I.E.L.D being a trilogy. I don’t think there will be that much interest in it.

  5. Let’s try to remember that the ENTIRE character list isn’t official yet, so we don’t know exactly who besides the headliners will be a part of the movie. Secondly, the avengers roster is huge! You have to take into account fan reaction, time period, budget and whole host of other things. As for Hawkeye, I think Renner is PERFECT for the role!

  6. I’m excited but trying to hold it back until it’s a official press release from marvel better news would be that they replace Evans lol.

I agree it seems they are putting to many people in it but I don’t think it’s as bad as ur making it sound. Iron man, capt , Thor, as the main guys with Fury, widow hawkeye and that other shield agent as supporting roles. I imagine ant man and hawkeye will both be much smaller roles for the first film roles that will grow much later. I doubt we will see any other shield agents aside from a few random shield extras with no dialogue. I also highly doubt hulk will be in this if he is it will probably be a supporting villian role but I don’t see him making it to this film.

    • this would be great news if we could bank on it i agree wholeheartedly with Daniel I’m trying not to get to excited until I’m sure that it’s going to happen. there is allot going on character wise but it’s the avengers i would like to see the Scarlet Witch Quick Silver and even the Vision! OK maybe that’s over doing it, still it is one of the greatest teams of superheroes ever and i look forward to seeing them all

  7. It would be cool if Hawkeye was an agent traking the Hulk or something like that.

  8. I want this movie to focus on the big three tin can, probogandor and lightning hippe…, imean iron man , capt and Thor (I kid cause I love). I want black widow and fury to both back ground characters who will get more focus in the shield movie. I want antman and hawkeye to have smaller roles in the back ground as well with antman getting more focus in his own movie and hawkeye getting more time in avengers 2. I think we should hold off on Vision and Wasp till A2 and I’d prefer QS and Sw never make it to many characters as is and we can’t flood the franchise. It doesn’t need each and every person to ever be in the comic.

    • yea!! it was all a joke i just wanted to see if you guys were paying attention If there were any avenger i would really like to see come to life it would be Moon Knight!! scarlet-witch and quicksilver were two of my least favorite although the vision was really pretty cool ant-man on his own would work even hawkeye would have the potential to do especially well on his own after the avengers looking forward to seeing what happens

  9. I obviously read too little Marvel, as my first reaction was “They are making a new M*A*S*H?”

  10. Awesome news Renner will make a BADASS Hawkeye. Hawkeye and Black Widow will be S.H.I.E.L.D agents in Avengers#1. Avengers#1 WILL be Iron Man, Captain America,Thor,A.N.T-Man,and Wasp. Fortunately no purple Wolverine suit for Hawkeye.

  11. As much as I like Chris Evans, Jeremy would have been 1293710927309127x Better choice for Cap.

    • why does everyone seem to hate evens so much i think that a lot of work went into trying to pick the best person for each role and after hearing all the negative comments i hope that you guy aren’t right i’d hate to see all this get screwd up becaese of casting everything since ed norton as bruce has been great rdy as tony hemsworth seems small to be thor thats the only thing that got me other than that i feel like all the latest choices for casting have been alright even renner as hawkeye

  12. Because Evans is a comedic actor and looks nothingg like capt and doesn’t have the acting chops to pull it off. It’s like casting Adam Sandler as capt. Aldo because rumor has it Evans did even audition they just gave it to him. Because he is not leadership material. Because he has no right standing shoulder to shoulder with a gifted actor like RDJ. Because non of his movies are good not one good film and not one financially successful one either.

    • if its one thing he does have its the looks. and you’re being too negative! try to be more open minded with the casting, yes evans usually play more comedic roles but you dont know how he’ll play captain america. maybe this will be his time to shine and we’ll see what a great actor he really is. you cant predict how its going to be so be more positive, even if you have a grudge against him.

  13. I really can’t understand everyones excitement for this character or actor, Hawkeye is just a Green Arrow rip off!!!

And the Avengers really doesnt need anymore characters.

    • Agreed. Personally I think Whedon has bitten off more than he can chew.

      • We won’t know until it happens but I have faith in that Whedon can balance a larger group of solid characters.

Read The Ultimates and see how they handle even more characters :)

        • Yeah but Rob, a comic or graphic novel can handle such a large cast my the merit of the medium, a 2 hour movie is a completely different animal. At the moment I fail to see how a cohesive story involving Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, Nick Fury, Shield and Hawkeye can work. Thats not counting the villains or other cheeky little cameos Marvel love to do.

All in one movie? In a 12 issue comic yeah fine, but as a movie there is no way it will come across as anything other a complete mess.

          • well they’ll just have to make it a 3 hour movie then! but i trust that they’ll find a balance between all this. this is marvel and its an important movie, i doubt they’ll screw it up!

            • Really? Have they never screwed anything up before??? They won’t make a three hour movie, it may be an important movie but that doesnt give it carte blanche to be good, quite the opposite in fact.

A balance between all those characters? And Ant Man (missed him out earlier) too. Iron Man 2 was slightly diluted by having too many characters, so The Avengers is going to be ten times worse in that respect. The movie will be completely unfocussed. And with Joss everybody loves me even though most things I do sorta fall flat on their arse Whedon in the directors chair ( and doing script rewrites) I have a fairly good idea of exactly how this move will turn out.

        • True to a point. I’ve got the “Ultimates” version and enjoy it to a degree but I prefer the original “Avengers” title since my collection goes right back to the early sixties. I guess those first impressions will always be dearer to my heart. :-)

I really do hope Whedon can pull this off. “The Avengers” will be be MARVEL’S most important film to date and I really want to see it become a HUGE critical and financial success.

I also think Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Fury should have more of a background role in the first film, let the founding members take pre eminence and then have other characters stepping up from “Avengers 2″ onwards.

    • Both Hawkeye and Green Arrow have horrible original costumes. Hawkeye looks like a purple Wolverine and Green Arrow is just a Robin Hood/Eril Flyn rip off!!! These days Hawkeye is a wayyyyy better character than Green Arrow but has always been interesting as a character even with the ugly costume. Green Arrow is just flat out corny.

  14. awesome news about Renner, good call Marvel. and definitely bring Norton back as the Hulk. think he NEEDS to be in it

  15. This will definitely make The Avengers worth seeing. Robert Downey Jr.’s greatest contribution to Marvel Entertainment will be the fact he legitimized the entire franchise into serious and excellent cinema. He has attracted top notch talent. So has Gweneth Paltrow. Their scenes together in Iron Man 1 are what top notch acting is all about. Not only have they recreated the Marvel Comics characters but brought movie cinema excellence to a block buster. Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johannsen, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Sam Rockwell, Olivia Munn, Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell are great additions to the movies to come. All they need is Edward Norton and Nathan Fillion and they will create movies that will long be remembered. I would like to add Iron Man 2 was no weak link to what is to come. The movie left me wanting more therefore it was a very good movie. I will be there May 5, 2011… Thor and then July 22, 2011 Captain America, The First Avenger. nuff said Excelsior !!!

  16. AND… It was finalized. He will be Hawkeye.

  17. I dont like the ultimate Hawkeye look.. There has to be some compramise somewhere. Please? That ultimate Hawkeye looks terrible. Either that or its just the illustration!! I am ELATED that Jeremy Renner is going to play Hawkeye though! The costume gotta be better then that Ultimate version though.

  18. @Wepz yeah there is another “Ultimates” Hawkeye costume,it’s realistic,tactical,covert/black but badass. No I’m not talking about that stupid crap with him wearing red goggles,a cirlce in the middle of his head and toting a gun & not that Ronin crap either. No there is another one that’s looks way more realisitic.

    • I don’t know how to drop in a pic here but it’s Millar,Hitch and Neary’s Ultimates #9 front page that shows the ideal Hawkeye uniform.

  19. I just saw The Hurt Locker last week….. Jeremy Renner would be an awesome pick for Clint Barton/Hawkeye

  20. Here we go again.
